(L EVANSVILLE, IND. -NDAYVEOBNING..... -JULY 19 Tho State Universtty. 'crtespondent at Bloomington write.3 JiAÜat the. literary exercises at Bloomington last week were highly interesting. Dr. Clark, of Cincinnati, caused great disappointment to the Urge concourse present, by failing to fulfil his engagement. . Cz Tuesday, Dr. Daily delivered the Baccalaureate address to the graduating class. Eis rahject -was "Urlzc "and Thusrcin," frcs Lev-ticus v 8. It was cnecf tic ablest cf Dr. D's. discourses, and cur Corres-, posdestaas'ires us there wore to plsgcrisas in it. It was truly a noble and criminal address. ' Previous to the regular service, on Tuesday, an interesting ceremony took place in the chapel. The students of the different cla&jcs, through one of the seniors, presented Dr. Daily with a beautiful gold headed cane, which was given as a token of regard and affection ta the worthy President and a3 a testimonial of their confidence in him notwithstanding the numerous slanderous assaults made upon him by his enemies. The presentation was accompanied by a neat and eulogistic address blthe student, which wa3 replied to by Dr. Daily in a very happy and eloquent manner. - , Trof. Blair of the Ohio State University, "delivered an address upon "American Literature," which though too long for the occasion, held the audience in silent and earnest attention for several hours. It was a Tery abte discussion. ' ; ' ' , Wednesday morning was occupied with the meeting of the Alumni, and , a business meeting of the faculty. In the afternoon, Dr. Parvin, "of Indianapolis," delivered an address before the Society of the Alumni, which was a chaste and eloquent J tribute to the memory of Dr. TVylie, late lresident of the college ; a man who had done much for the educational interests of the State. On Thursday a large crowd assembled to listen to the addresses . of the graduating class, consisting of fifteen students, and to witness the conferring of degrees. The cxcrciscs were of a high order of excellence, and were deeply interesting to the large audience. The University is highly pros perous,' and ha3 now a larger number of 5tudcnt3 than at any former period. The calumnious charges against Dr. Daily made before the Hoard of Trustees were withdrawn, there being no proof tb sustain them. The slanders against the Dr. find no cre dence among the students and people of Bloomiagton, who have the most intimate intercourse with him, and know him best. After a very laborious preparation his ac cusers were completely defeated before the Board cf Trustees. It is vzost strange that a rsaa so rcuch atecrzed ai bslovech by tic, who kzcw hire most intimately should be the object cf csccasirg perrecuticri, by a lire unLcr cf eccrziec, wie fculkvcd h to ts a hyjecrite azd :rtcr. The Iruh editor of the Eujiircr, in extolling the Germans and Irish, insults the native citizens with the folio .ving disparaging comparison : "How different is their cm;r:? from that which is pursutdby our young n itivcr. Ii'urse-l, and lapped as it were, in lanry, their manual cü'uits, like their mental, are weak, unprofitable and palling." We protest that this mental imbecility, if true, belongs only to a cl.iss, and that the native Lccoruptonite party. Even, these, under the rowels which their hopeful teacher is pressing into the teuder .pots of their self-love and nationality, may be" driven finally to cast off their native stnpidity, ami their "unprofitable and palling weakuea-v' both of body and mind. tgy Dick Slater, "the Caitaiu,M. who id Senator from Johnson county, was noticed some months ago, &3 having suddenly taken hh departure from Indianapolis, under ausplciou3 circumstance-?, since .which time arrangcrnenti have been made by the Bright follu to ail the supposed vacancy' i n . tile " Senate," occasioned by the supposed absquat- ': uläiiüü. Our Mew Mali Arrangement.

The Canneltoa Reporter gives expression j to the indignation which every citizen feels at the utter disorganization of; the mails. The Postmaster 'General seems to haTe granted almost everything asked of him by the contractors and people, but has given it without system or organization, and the result is, he is incurring a vaitexpros?, and, in truth, making matters worse than they wcrc under the old EVstrni. The Importer ays: - ' ' . . We had thourht that the mail had 'reach ed a peirt cf uoelcüsrcüs beyond which there was no possibility of further inefficiency, acd looked forward ta the new arrangements cr relief from the constant anncrascc cf failure?, etc, tut wo confess to a tad disappointment. . If the mails were bad previous to tic 1st c: Ju:y, tsey 3rc now worthless they answer, no purpose whatever. The river xuaii ii nothiur niorc ex ess than a hurabu, .a wrttchii burlesque. Wc don't know wheu c are to receive a mail, wc don't know when wc can iead away one. We arc two or three days with out a mail. The whole system is com pletely dcranr;al. The new arrangement may d for thi contractors; po&sibly they will make money, but a more worthless arrangement was never made for the interests of the people along the Ohio Valley. We earn that Rockport is supplied with a daily mail from Evansville, while we of Cannelton are left to the mercy of a contract, which, since it went into operation, has giv en us three mail. From ten to fifteen days to Evansville, and as many, to write and get an answer from Louisville and New Albany is required ; if these are the blessiugs of the new arrangement, wc pray the Department to tack in on to the old mud cart concern again, and deliver us at once from this new and magnificent river mail. The Tennessee Banks. - The . attempt to resume specie payments in Tennessee, has caused a serious difficulty among the old banks in the State. The Planters Bank' is the only one which' has really resumed payments in specie. " She pays out none but v her own notes, which she redeems at her counter . in coin. In order to do this, : she wuld not receive the notes of anybutppecie paying banks. As the old Dank of Tennessee was unable, to resume, the Planters Bank was compelled to refuse ber bills. This has excited a warm public discussion. Cave Johnson, president of the Bank of . Tennessee, ' In a very long letter gives the following very unsatisfactory reasons for "not attempting to redeem the Bank's obligations in coin. He says, in short "the Bank is unable to resume." 1. The Bank, in order to aid : the public, has kept out a large circulation. , - . , 2. It could not now safely resume without risking a second suspension. 3. It would require dollar fur dollar m gold to iu.-tain the Bank, aud this it is not able to control. 4. The independent and stock Banks would form a combination against the Bunk of Tennessee, should it resume, and such an influence it could not well resist. . vllc tayj he has - unlimited ccufidcncc in tsc ac::i:y o: inc i;ani to meet it liaBihtics. - Tha Citiscz-' Bar.k, . recently clued, is c-c cf the ttock banks, and her circulation is secured by State Bends. c G;y.
