Oats are badly damaged, and there will scarce be one third of an ordinary crop. Corn, though backward, looks . remarkably fine, and with a late fall, a good crop will be made. The river is 6 feet 3 inenca by the pier J mark and falling. Weather clear... Merer ry 86. jCapt. Fuller, of the steamer Gen. Pike, in the line between Louisville and Cincinnati, has gained an infamous fame, by a recent trial before the police court, in the latter city, for horsewhipping a poor victim of his lasts with his own child in her arms, because she importuned him for means for iu support. " There has not been a culprit in the courts of the country for the" last years ! charged with the mo3t heinous 'crime upon their records, whose acts hare tnet with so overwhelming an cxpression'of public indignation and abhorrence. Let him hide himself from the universal scorn 'of men, and never put his foot again upon the deck of a steamer.' If he has the hardihood to brave public opinion, or hi employees are so unprincipled as to sustain him, and disregard it, let every man avoid the. craft he is connected with. Where does history or romance present a scene' of more dreary pathos? Poor Creatore I whosoever doea not .sympathize w ith her dare not pray for the mercy that he or she shows unto others. Afterwards the father of the child Is periMscutod by the importunate appeals of tue mother for iU support. It is designed to be kept at a temperature within, that will preserve meats, fruits, fish, and all sorts of perishable articles, fresh during several days, and permit of their transportation to any dis tance over railroads. Recently one of them came to Cincinnati, from New York, containing 500 live oysters, seven sea turtles, soft shell crabs, 23 barrels pine apples, 25 boxes oranges, bananas, clam., oysters in shell., &c., &c., all of which arrived in prime order, and gave the epicures a fine time while they lasted. These cars will be used in the transportation of poultry, butter, lard and other perishable fresh articles from the fields of the West to the markets of the Eastern cities, and in their return will bring us the luxuries of the sea and of the tropical islands. ———<>——— Salaries of New York Clergymen.
