TUESDAY MORNING, JULY 13 1 JSTThe Enquirer i3 seriously offended at our allusion to the political mission of two active Bright men of Vanderburg county to the people of Spencer. We did not make the statements from bare inff-rences and suspicions of our own, but predicated them upon information communicated to m by reliable Democrats, the former intimate political associates anü friends of the two Bright missionaries. If our informants lave been guilty of misrepresentation and falsehood, th siu must be attributed to their former corrupting associations, from which they are not as yet fully redeemed. If the testimony of old Democrats is not reliable, there is collateral and circumstantial evidence, which we derive from another source, to establish a most unwarrantable interference on the part of Mr. Brigbfs men in the local affairs of the county. Some weeks since, a call was published in the Rockport Democrat for a county convention on the 21th inst, to nominate county officers, which was signed by fifty old and consistent Democrats, most of whom were, however, onti-Lccomptonitcs. The signs of this movement alarmed the Lefotuptonite clique of Dffice-holdtr, and a counter movement was instiguted by them. Handbills, that came no one knew whence, signed by no one in authority or out, w ere secretly circulated calling for a convention on Saturday last at Centrcville. This call tould originally be traced to no responsible author in the couuty ; but a good Democrat writes us that the handbills emanated, he has reason to believe, from the Enquirer office in Evamville. A week before the meeting of this logos convention, the po.-t master at Kvansville, whose official dutirj at home have recently been declared to be so onerous and pressing that the Department granted him an assistant at a salary of $730; with the Sheriff of Vanderburg, is called by private business and personal inclinations to spend six hoi days with the thermometer from 95 to 100, itinerating over the dusty roads and hilis of Spencer. On Thursday night h secret Bright caucus was held in Rockport, at which lioth of tu. Vanderburg officials were present to aid in forming the preliminaries for the convention at Centreville on Saturday. On Saturday, Mr. Bright's two locomotive friends were at the convention ; and whose views arc w e to presume this bogus conclave wa3 made to express? It was vauntingly asserted in Washington, months ago, that Xiblack should be reelected if it should cost ?j,000; aye, or $100,000. The people are to be britcd with funds filched from their own trvaiury. Against the power of money, ofliri.il t-Hrjuc-ism and iutrigu, Judge Hovey has t contend single-handed. Though we do not agree with him in all his views, we cannot tvitUhoM from him our warmest sympa thies in this content, tor the gallant and able U...M, two na!!! ' . rt every ce.nerous and independent man mu u with him into the unequal T,,E Congressional District. Mr, cnglish has already Liken the stump, and is announced to speak at I'aoli, Orleans, Salem, Leavenworth, Hartford, aud other places in the District. Dr. Shcrrod, of Paoli, lung an expectant successor of Mr. English is al.o out actively canvassing the District; Cravens, an intelligent gentleman, is also presenting his claims to the consideration f the people; Simeon K. Wolf, editor of the Harrison Democrat, is a young aspirant fur Congressional honors, and his county are urging his merits upon'the voters of the District It is a family contest, ns the candidates are all nearly of the same political faith. Shcrrod, who has been waiting four years fur the succession, under two successive, solemn pledges from English, that he would not be a candidate for re-election, is indignant at their successive violation and the selfish ambition which English displays in seeking for a fifth nomination. English snubs Sherrod, and treats bis claim-; as if thev were presumptuous. In the meantime the friends of Ballard iiuith are in no wise afllieted by the discord in the family, hoping that the rivals when they shall have cptarrelied and defeated each other, will unite upon Mr. Smith as a compromise candidate and pacificator. The Hon. John U. Uavl.i Has tleclarcJ himself an independent candidate for Congress in the Seventh District He opposes the rejrular nominee, Henry Secrest, who professes to be an onti-Ia?coinr tonite, though he accepts the English bill as a settlement of the juestioiu We do not fully understand to w hat party Mr. I -avis looks for bis princijKd support. His course in Congress ha3 been eudorfed by the Con vention that nominated his opponent, Se crest. The affairs of the Democratic juirty in that district are so mixed as to le ineoin prenen-iioie to an ouisiuer. n uie iieimtlicans anl Americans could unite in the iupport of Mr. Davis his election would Ik? placed beyond doubt. It would be an honor to the State to see the only consistent anti Lecompton Democrat in the delegation from Indiana, returned by a triumphant vote of the people of all parties. Mr. Davis is retViTisg the bitter denunciations and an a there as from the Lecomptonites for his al leged apostacy from what thev denominate Democracy. arc taking an active concern in our Con- , gressional election. The State Journal is urging the Republicans of this district to give Judge Hovey their hearty support. A correspondent of that picr says : Judge HoTcy is entitled to the re?j-ect, confidence and srrroRT of all men, of w hatever party, who harmonize with him in opinion. Xay more the honesty and independence of such men as Judge Hovey demauds the most emphatic commendation of all tme Republicans, not only in his own District, but throughout the State ami the country; and it peems to me that the most appropriate and eflicient manner for them to manifest that approval is, to stand by the Judge and elect him to CoMiREss over his Lecompton cometitor. The State Sentinel nflirnis that 'inattention to the duties of his oflicc was the reasons of Judge Hovey's removal by Mr. Buchanan. The change was determined upon at least a mouth In-lore Judge Hovey promulgated Iiis views upon the Kansas question, and we do not suppose the President has to this day leen informed or cures what Jni!yc Hover's opinion may be upon that issue. The pel Ith- fur his removal and the appointment of the present IiiciilTtbent was signed bv Democrats who differ upon the Lecompton question. The inattention of Judge Hovey to the duties of his sitiou was a matter of common remark. During his administration, no convictions were made for criminal olfetn-es, except in one case, we are informed, and tliat was iioii a pica of guilty. The contrast in the cflicicncy of the pi eseut and late District Attorneys is most Ftriking. Mr. Vorhees has given the nui.-t thorough attention t ithe duties of his oitioii. The "result is manifested in the cni iction of a large inirular of criminals at the late term of the Court. The attempt of Judje Hovev to fret npr-vm-pathy iiou the plea of his hating li-en proecriU'd lor opinion's sake is most absurd. He .;' rili--d notluug in taking the j-osilion he did against the administration. And if the truth could In known, we Klieve that Judge Hovey desired his removal, to make political capital for himself. There is one thing certain, the removal was demanded by the public interest.-, and it is lfvond contra diction that the public interc.-ls have Ix-en served by his removal. It is a change which meets with general approval, aud the Ad ministration deserves praise for the art. We do not think that judge Hovev, or anv other man, should hold so iin'airtaiit a rsition ii3 a mire sinecure. The &nliml was' never niorcTckU-'.-. of its own credit for truth which it seems usually to hold in little consideration than when it made the above assertion the man, the habits and history of his life is a refutation of the false charge. He is earnest, active, persevering, and laNrious in all he undertakes; these chanu teristics are the results of his physical and mcntl con-titit-tion; they are a juirt of his nature; and he cannot exist as an indolent, negligent, inattentive man. Such an allegation will find no more credence among those who have seen Judge Hovey, than an assertion that be bad changed his skin to that of n it Ethcopian. The S'HtiitC $ co-adjutor here, who is quite as well informed in reg:ird to tjic reasons tor the Judge's re-moval as the fru tinel, has rejieatedly declared that it was made because he rcla-lld against the dictation of the Executive and would not supjiort 1 Ye"arenYTthe onran of Judire Hovev, as CT a, P many of the Lecompton jwipers declare us to I?; nor are we the admirers or defendents of all His iditical views. But "we admire the manly imlejieiideiice with which lie has asserted aud maintained his hone-t coni tions, and we agree with him heartily in his interpretation of the doctrines of Mipul.ir sovcrciirntw It is for his noble defence of this fundamental Democratic doctrine that wedc.-ire tosee him elected to Coiijrrc.'s 1ieing that a man w ho had the courage and inncsty to declare his convictions under the circum.-taiico in which be took his stand against LccomptonL-m is worthy of trust and honor. 5yThc Administration have at last de clared that the Mormon invasion is to be suspended, (irders have gone forward to the Utah Army to countermand its march, and the following distribution of the troojis h to le made.
