OtttHHL EVANSVILLE, IND. MONDAY MORNING, JULY 12 . jgpHon. Mr. Niblack, the Representative cf this District ia Congrc&J, was in Sown on Friday and Saturday looking as affable and complacent, as if there had been

no suspicion of harm or wrong in Lecotnptoniim, cf which he has been an undeviating abettor. The Judge has sadly endangered his own prospects to serve his friend the office-holders whose interests he could promote only by yielding to the wishes of the Executive. They are now making strenuous efforts to repay the service, and to retain him in a position where "he can continue to aid them, by canvassing the district. They wiU be unremitting in their labors for him, as the issue may determine their own fate. Judge Niblack will have an army of active advocates in the field to aid him, not only by their eloquence and acts of intrigue, but with their money,
while Judge Hovcy will be compelled to face this disciplined and mercenary host, single handed, without any organized party to sustain him. Judge Hovey has assumed a "bold aai gallant itand in defence cf hb convictions . of right, that must enlist the sympathies of every generous voter." If he fi?hLä and wini the battle alone, w:ta so 0 many odia against him, it will be the proudest triumph of pcrsoail independence over party cliqueiiru ever achieved in the State CäJfA con: pondent from Spencer, writ: U3 that the prospects of the independent Democracy ia that county are very bright. Hovey will carry the county by 100 or 500 rotea. He says the attempts of the Evansviile Postmaster, and the clique of Vanderburgh oSce holders, "to Wheedle" the Democracy into what they call "the old line" docs not succeed at all. Their presence and efforts, he thinks, are doing mere for Hovey than the Judge's bc-J. friend, could accomplish. It ia the intention of the anti-Le--compton party at their convention to indicate a new candidate for State Senator, as Shoemaker's prevarications have destroyed all confidence in his political sincerity. He is abo unpopular in his own county, with hia own party, where he was beaten last Mtuaa by a ma of hia own political ßentidtita. who was comparatively a recent comer and but little known to the people. A correspondent from Perry county, writes us that if an intelligent anti-Lecompton Democrat be announced for the State Senate, for the district of Warrick, Spencer and Terry, the latter will surely give Lira a ma jority of at least 300 votes. tjTln the case of Gen. Jim Lane, the Kansas magistrates were twenty-four hours ia making their decision after the close of the trial. This difficulty was caused ia part by the contradictory character of the tettiimagined in connection with the case, was sworn to by the witnesses on one tide or the ether. Every thadc of character of a case wa3 made out from the blackest and most deliberate murder, to the most meritorious and gallant instance of self-defence ever recorded From the known character of the witnesses the Court could have been at little loss to know what part of the testimony was credible, but as they were at liberty to', believe one part as well as another, they studied some time to decide what aspect they had better give the case. , Though this result was not unexpected, yet it has excited great indignation in the better and more intelligent class of the community, ' for they know just how the case was made out, but the rowdies, who are all Lane's friends, are in great glee The cause of the quarrel between Lane and Jenkins, arising from the disputed land claim, was carefully kept out of tbis investigation by Lane's counsel, and it must be confessed that without this the case appears much better for Lane, but to those who know how he provoked this quarrel, by making a vexatious claim to land to which be had no title, how he tried to compel Jenkins by threats and otherwise to com- , promise and give him half of it, and how when he found it was impossible to frighten Jenkins into any compromise, he finally provoked him into a hostile attitude where he could get an excuse for killing him. To those who know all this, it fppcars a most deliberate murder. He knew there was no pcssibility of making any arrangements with Jenkins; With him his case was hopeless, , but may not be so with his administrators or representatives. - tO-Ir. James H. Headiy, heretofore a respectable citizen cf Buffalo, has been tsntea:ci to the State PrUa fcr five years fcr passing counterfeit money. The Czuricr says the prisoner, while receiving his sen- . tczee, tepcared perfectly tcrpid, lyh ia an arzi chair pole and motiinleci The prisoner was an inveterate :r.r,c . - J .1 f-. .4 VT, V c cr.ee. He clutched his gas with such an avaricious grasp, that he would not pay the $3000 bail aad go free ; but to save the ' $5000, tcck the chances of in acquittal, and got a seatence to the penitentiary from which all his wealth wen't relieve him. Pkodcctiow or Opioi w India. It is recorded as a matter of Cict that there are out hundred thousand acres of the Nr. land In India, watered by the Ganges, devoted to the production of opium. The annual value of the crop is set down at $33,000,000, npoa which the East India Company levy a tax of 55,000,000. It i estimated tbat China has paid India within the laat fifty years, $4,000,000 for opium, over three hundred per cent cf this sua being clear profit. fyJTbe Post on and Lowell R.Itroal has been in operation twenty-three years, running four and eight long pauger trains per day, aad not a single pajrr-ngtr hat ever been killed on it."
fiSTMr. Breslin, the defaulting and ab- j
sem liner treasurer of Ohio, br whose dis- J honesty the ötatc lost $300,000, promises to make a dLclourc, from his retreat in Canada, of the manner iu which the Stale funds were tquandertd and lofct. It is said he was a generous, confiding man, without any business sagacity, and wai the victim cf the machinations of a company of reckless tpcculators. He was elevated to the place by hard, scheming, proßigate men, with a view to be used, and, if ncctosary, ruined, , t to serve their purposes. He did uot want a conception of the difference between right and wrong; but wa3 destitute ot the moral firmness to resist the pressure of these who elevated him, and . tyrannized over him by keeping that fact constantly before his eyes. lie has attempted to shield these fake fnencU by refusing to make any disclosures that would implicate them, believing that as the t 1 - . .1 J W - money was irreinevaDiy iom, h umu no good to the State, but would carry un happiness and suffering into numerous, now happy families. But he finds that these friends, whose . welfare he has faithfully guarded, have so wantonly disregarded kh feelings and situation, that they arc no longer entitled to any consideration ct his hands. That their pkdgea of " their niobt sacred honor" ere but as ttraws ia the wind; and.. he knows that while in exile, they bold tbc money and hngb at him. Hence his determination to rnskc the sUtcmer.t, a::d let them take the coi.scqvnce?. , Col. I'epper'a Adtrei. The following ü tbc addrcoo of Cel. Pep per to the citizens of OUi" aid Switzfrlsnd counties, offcrhg himxlf as 11 independent candidate for the Senate. The Colonel has becu one cf the most ardcut and ccsiistcnt Democrats in the State, and haa been looked upon aa one of the standard borers of the party: t mow cmzii-a : Alter a carctui exam ination cf the Cincinmti Tbtform of 185, and a candid recurrence to the argv.mcnts of the papera aud tpcakctt who supported the candidate for the Presidency ncmiaated by tbc Convention that adopted it, it B-xras to me that to strip tbc platform of the rpirit of pcpular sovereignty, you have, instead of a system cf principle!, tit to be supported, a caffold well suited fcr the political eaci.utioa of every Demotrat w ho shall ttcp upon it. I cannot concur w 1 1 that rrty or fic i n that would waive the right to cicrci-f popular eovcrcignty, or stifle tbc will of the people by forcing an odious constitution up on an uawilliag community :uch astbt Lc- J comptcn Constitution b aftsi it bad been rejected by an overwhelming majority. I would cenpronisa expediency often, fcr the eake cf peace, but principle novcr. I do net regard myself as a leader in this political strife agaiast public wrong; but I feel that "I have- a duty to perforin," and I will perform it. You may therefore regard me as an independent candidate for tbc Senate ia this District, upon tbc Democratic Platfjrm of Popular Sovereignty the doctrine that the juit powers of all fjovcrnuK-cts are derived from tbc people "svhicb, rightly in terpreted, ncaas that the people ot all the Territories are vetted with au inalienable right to vcte for or againct a Consti'ution for their future government, and that anj force tha Lc:crcpton Conrtltulion upca tbe people of Kansas, aciinsV- their -Rill, bv calling to its aid the power of the National Legislature, involved an act of Executive and Coagre!Nional intervention and criminal usurpation, in defiance of tbc principles of self-government, and at the sacrifice of the plighted faith of tbe nation. The CritUnicn-Montomcry rxncnduicut of the Lcconipton Constitution was, and deerved to be, acceptable to allrigbt-thinking men. But the legislative artifice and trickery of the Green-Lngli&h amendment, ought to be, and I thiuk is, justly regarded by ull high-minded men of every partv, as au in sult, and merits the severe rebuke of thci American party. I must, therefore, if cheated, be 'allowed to oppose Lccomptoai8ra, Bill Englislram, flunkeyism, and the worship of men fcr the State Senate who arc in favor of Lccou .pton, or the leaden who supported it I will obey instructions on all subjects, by the majority or resign will insist . upon an economical administration of the State Government will expose the frauds that have been practiced upon the treasury and people of the State, t j the utmost of my bumble abilities; and, if possible, di ire from their hiding places tho scoundrels who perpetrated them. If my views shall -be approved by tho independent electors, I doubt not they will vote forme; if not, I s hall at least have accomplished my object in the main, by tcekingthis opportunity to denounce the practice cf the present admini2tration its anti-Democratic, x, cicmplifi-.d in the Le compton windle. - - Aeel C.
