Great confidence is expressed in the Kugliib agricultural papers, in the fr&aJ success and general adoption of the t team plow. Many improvements have been made in it in EnghaJ, and where it bad been u-cd it iias added quarter to the crop above the amount raised on Iiorae plowing. The Crops is Gibson. The Princeton Iwlianian, says from extensive enquiry, it is led to believe there will be as much, if net more wheat in Gibson county this season, as there waj last; but a great part of it will be of an inferior quality. The yield, jut nt-rc, U not so great 3 it was last year, but there b a larger number of acres in w heat than was ever known in any former year. It is thought that the average per acre will be from 1 2 to 1 5 bushels. A r.itTi'i Accident. A stranger, stopping at Sixt's Hotel, on Locust street, on Thursday night, arose in hi sleep and accidentally tell, or precipitated himself, from a window in the third story, on to the sharp points of a railing to a veranda that projects from the second story of the building. Several of the iron points penetrated hu side, breaking his ribs and makiug fearful wounds. He U not expected to recover. . ÜnjjrThe London Timet is alut to I printed on the beet pacr, at a saving of two cents per pound which, on their edition of several tonj per day, is equal to $100,000 a year. It will soon be used on the Illustrated London News, and all the leading London periodicals it having been thorougly tested, and found in every respect superior to the paper heretofore used for printing dry giving a clear, sharp impression, so desirable in the working of wood engravings. CaSjTA terrible accident occurred at the shaft of the coal mines at Thomastown, Schuylkill county, Penn on Tuesday last Four men and two boys were ascending the shaft in a car on ft cage, and when at the top of the pit, by the awarkness of the engineer and earlessncss of those managing the hoisting apparatus, the car was upset and its precious cargo of human life six personswas precipitated down the shaft, a perpendicular depth of two hundred and forty feet. Their deaths were instantaneous. Their remains were brought up in a shockingly mutilated condition. CfcjyAt Gosport, in this State, on the 3d inat three brothers, named John, Hugh and Jo:ph Murphy, got into a Fourth of July drunken quarrel, when John Murphy killed Joseph by cutting him in the neck and nearly severing the head from the body, lie also, after his brother had fallen, struck hint twice in the back, cutting iuto his lungs. The doctors say that either of the woundi was mortal. The tw j surviving brothers were immediately arrested, aud are now safe in jail. The murdered man, 'some two 5'cars ugo, cut a man's throat. They were a bad set, and the citizens of the place thought of lynching the two survivors. Tobt Kkarney, 300 miles from Leavenworth, is an old and important iniliUry station. It consists of old-fashioned, weatherbeaten farm houses, and earthen huts, the latter the more numerous. The lightning rods attached to every angle of the wooden buildings, are significant of the frequency and violence of the thunder storms which infest this region. The front is situated on the eastern bunk of the river, which- is half u mile distant. Ou this bank, strange as it may stem, no timber h found, aud such is the difficulty in bringing it from the other side, that wood sella for $28 per cord. For this and other reasons the government is urged to abandon it. The buffalo sometimes collect in such Tast herds in the valley of the fort, that they become a nuisance, and the garrison brings out its howitzers and cemmencei a cannonade upon them, in which hundreds arc slain, and the herd h frightened off. The Louisville Jouanalsays: About thirty years ago when Sir Edward Lyttou Bulwer was a bridegroom and the present Lady Bulwer was his bride, that exquisite poetess "L. E. L.," wrote and pubiKhed an account of their characters and personal appearance. They were both quite young, and each of them wag in delicate health. The bridegroom was described as pule and facinating, and the bride was pointed, as a fragile aud fairy-like creature of sur passing loveliness. The tender tints of her cheek were said to be "like rose-leaves crushed on ivory." The description was read everywhere, and the public admiration and the public sympathy were deeply excited for the charming young pair, who, it was thought, must soon pass away from a world too coarse aud rude for such gentle and lovely natures as theirs. Ah, little dreamed the reader then, that, after & few years, the gentle bridegroom would strike the tender bride, that the would seek redress by publishing a scries of coarse, fierce and vituperative novels and pamphlets against him, and that, after a few more years, she, grown to be a sturdy, red-faced and muscular woman, would pur sue him in his canvas for Parliament, take her stand upon the hustings in. reply to his public speeches, call upon him to confront her, shout "coward" at him in his precipi tate flight from her presence, and announce her determination to persecute mm till he should cry for mercy and humbly make her amends for all his villainies. 5gy Mr. Angamar, a gentlemia familiar with the sugar crop of Louisiana, says the effects of the crevasses in Jefferson Parish are slight ; in St. Charles the damage is great . In St John the Baptiste it is the same. St. James, the lower part badly, the npper part slightly; Assumption, badly; Lafourche, very
badly. Mr. A. states that in the above crevasse last year's crop was 47,640 hhdü.; the pro?pect of this year's crop in the same par ishes before the crevasse occurred wa3 72,000 hhd.-?.; and the probable crop, if the crevas3g were stopped within twelve, days from the time he submitted his report, would be 24,500 hhds. He then went to the bed where the ladies were sleeping, and putting hi.-s hand on the throat of one of them, took from her fingers the rings she was wearing, telling her that if she made any noise he .would choke her to death. While the thief was at his work, the other, young lady awoke and screamed, when Capt.
