JULY 3 i of Ai the corps in the Jvttrnal Office arc too deeply impre?ca with the sacmlness of the tij to labor on tic oanircrs tj of National lUdepcndraccTire shall be -unable to t issve a paper IxTüesJarinorniuu. :; , " - J . !;,. M . ESfAS Ungual Spdthy lias been wanitested by our citizens, this year, in omitting to moke any prepxirat ions for the public celebration of .the Fourth of J uly. No public demonstration of any kind, of which we hare heard, is to be made, unless it be the firing öf i morning and evening salute by the gun squad.' Jlost of oar peole seem disposed to spend the day in quiet at home, or in small social private parties. There is comfort and perhaps wisdom if not patriotism in this mode of observing the day, in this excesiirc hot weather. The morning train will take ft large number up to l'atoka wrhere generous preparations have bwn made to feast and entertain the citizens of two or three counties, and w here nil ccmicrs will be sure of a welcome. A fetr are going p to Doonville, where the Warrick Agricultural Society celebrate the day by a b&rbarne unon their" luir trrounds. Dr. Oraff,of Gibson, and Mr. Teach, of tinier will each deliver on oratiou upon Agriculture, find the Iutcrests and Duties of farmers as a clasA. This will afford a very ratioaal and intea'Sting mode of Fpending the day. A iiumlcr arc going uj to Cmunelton and Tell City, to kc the w under ful growth of the. latter place, nnl to unite with the new comcrj in their celebration of the day, to which they have invited all who wish to Tisit their new city. ' Defeat f the V, 8. Troop by the Indiana The last new s from Oregon, contains ac count of a disastrous defeat of a battalion of U. i$. Troops under Cbl. Steptoe, in a battle with the Indians, about the middle of May on Snake river, one of the upper brunches of the 'Columbia. The Indians early in April, assembled in largo numbers, and made some hostile demonstrations, which induced Col. Steptoe, to send from Walla Walla to the Dallas fur reinforcements, to enable him to take the field against the avages. - It is supposed that after receiving additional troops, he marched to the ' attack of the Indians, and encountered ' them on Snake river, where it Li reported he was de feated after a sanguinary action, in which he lost fifty men. He is supposed to 1 had a force of 4G0 men w itli him, and he is a brave and cautious officer. If he was defeated with so large a loss, the numltcr of Indians must have been large, exhibitin an extensive combination among them, and the fight must have been a desperate one, i Mil i i ii it n i the action are not official, but come principally through Indian sources. If the intelligence be confirmed all the tnnps in Oregon and California will be ordered to the scat of hostilities, and a general exterminating Indian war will be waged, more bloody and expensive perhaps than we have escaped in Utah. o A slide occurred last week on the rail road that runs ulong the gorge of the Niagara river, from the suspension bridge to Lewistown, at a point where the road runs along a brink, several hundred feet above the river, and where the descent is nearly perieiidieular. More than seventy feet of the road slid off into the river. A gentleman who Bad misicd the evening train, undertook to walk to Lewistown. He came to the very edge of the slide before he discovered ly the dim light of the moon, the fearful state of the case. Another step, and it would have len the last of him. The slide had probably taken place immediately on the passing over of the train but a short time before, for the rocks w ere then tumbling and crashing Into the abyss, and the gentleman felt sensibly the earth give way under his feet as he sprung back. No mortal can tell how near destruction aud total annihilation that train of cars came. Its own weight and motion, doubtless, start ed the avalanche. Its speed an in.-t.iut of time a finger's weight may have been all that stood between eternity and every Mul on board. Dut the train did pa.s, the pleasure-seeking passengers all unconscious vf the danger they had escaped. Tue Supremacy ok the Ocean. A description of the jqeed of the rival lines of steamships tctwecii New York and Kngland has brought out the record of the three quickest trips ever made between the two rounfrieJ. The Ualtic, of Collin's line, in 1851, in:ule the passage in J days, 12 hour, and 8 minutes. The Persia, of the Cunard line, m ile the trip last year in 1 days, 22 hours, and 30 minutes. Yundcrhilt's steamer, Yanderbilt, made the jsissage l.t month in 9 days ami 1) hours. By the above figures it will be seen that the Baltic has Iteatcn the quickest trip of the Tersiii mentioned, 10 hours and 22 minute. The Vanderbilt has crowded the Baltic Tcry hard, leaving a difference in favor of the latter vessel, of oulv 3 hours and 53 minutes, but some allowance must he made in favor of the Vanderbilt, for the difference between Southampton end Liverpool, which is Utuctn sixty and eventy miles. The Democrat ie Legislature of California (Hissed at its last tession a law, which goes into c.Tect the 1st of Oetoljer next, absolutely prohibiting the immigration of Chinese or any of the Mongolian race, into the b'tate. The b'tatute has lceii printed in Chinese and sent to China, to be distributed along the eastern coast of Asia, to stop at once the Asiatic migration. After the net takes effect, the"(enalty for bringing a Chinese or Mongolian into the State, is a fine of ?U00, with imprisonment from six to twelve months, fur every one landed. It is a grave pic-tion whether such a law is constitutional. The Chinese are a civilized people, with w hom we hold diplomatic intercourse; and they have consequently claims to the civil and international rights, in this country, that are given to the subjects of other nations.
