His counsel, C. G. Uggla, has bceu condemned to one month's imprisonment and to the interdiction,' for having, with full knowledge, undertaken the defense of an unjust cause. The Weather. The thermometer at Indianapolis on Sunday and Monday stood 90 and 100 in the shade. Several iersons were afflicted by partial sun strokes. The range of the thermometer during those days at Indianapolis and Terro Haute, was eight degrees higher than at this point. On Tuesday there "were copiouj showers at Tcrre I laute and South along the line of the K. ii C. railroa!, as fir down as Princeton, but not a drop fell iu this vicinity. : -s . CTThe depression of business in the Kastern cities has caused a large decline in the prices of real estate. Notwithstanding the abundance of .money and the difficulty of finding safe investments for It, except in re;il estate, iu Horton the prices of houses and lots have fallen fifteen or twenty per cent, below w hat they were a year ngo. The number for sale and rent is unpreccdently large. JCiJThe heat of the Fun a few days since, so expanded tLc rails in one p!acc on the road from UuQalo to Hochestcr, that both mils curved outwanls nearly six inches fYoru a straight line. Wheu the rails were laid, by the fault of the trackmen, no sjiace for expansion was left. Fortunately in this instance the condition of the rail was discovered in time to arrest a train thatwiis approaching the place, and which would have been throwu off the track. The Ciioim ix tub vicinity oe Ijocisille. The Journal says, wheat iu this county has been attacke 1 by rust and smut, or by rust, snmst and scab. Consequently the yield must prove greatly short of an average crop, whilst the quality iu most cajes will 1e poor. Rust has &Uo made its appearance in the oat fields within a few days. It sterns to travel northward as the season of maturity in each locality arrives. The crop of jotatoes will be large, and corn is doing well. , Lamentable (kXTBBExcE. A young man by the name of Rudolf Cottou was killed by a stroke of lightning, on hist Saturday, nt the house of widow McKay, iu Indiana, opposite Currolltou, Ky. The electric fluid struck a scythe in the handj of a jtersou near by, and glancing along it entered the hat of Cotton, and passing through hisltody ' shivered a t-touc on which he was standing into a thousand fragments. He fell dead. Two daughters of Mrs. McKay were struck insensible by the shock at the -same time, and the ear rings of one of the ladies were (mclted from her cars. The girls were not .expected to recover. Cotton and one of the girls were to have been married shortly. 1 ttöAnti-Lccomptonisni has prevailed in the Minnesota State Legislature. On the 19th inst, resolutions condemning the Rational Administration for its coarse in egard to Lecompfon, and another endorsing Douglas and Shields, were passed by a iecided majority. There was a great deal jf filibustering to prevent their passage, 5ut they went through. The Lecomptou Congressmen In the Free States. Slavery Iu Vlrglula. The Richmond Enyhircr, of the 22d iüSt., s.tjs that the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals "has lately decided the most im portant case to the institution of negro tlxvery that has been abjudicated since the times of Lord Mansfield." It is," quirer says, " the Dred Scott decision upplied to slaves," and settles the question whether they have "civil or social rights," by determining their ttatut to be not that of prrrens but of thingt.
The case in which the decision was given was that of Dably r. l'oindextcr s Executor, James L. l'oindextcr, by hi3 will, gave his slaves "the choice ot being emancipated or sold public! v." The executor filed a bill in a Circuit Court asking the Court to construe the will upon several points, but more especially upon the question whether the emancipatist wa3 absolute; and if not abso lute, but conditional, whether the slave, previous to their actual emanciation, had the legal capacity to make the necessary election. The judge of the circuit decided in favor of the slaves; that is to say, that by the terms and operation of the will they were absolutely emancipated., From this decision the residuary legatees appealed to the supreme judicial tribunal of the state, wnerc mo decision or the circuit was re versed that court holding that the emanci pation under the will was not absolute, but conditioned upon a choice to be made by the slaves, which choice they were legally iiirajaible of making. They, therefore, re ceive no benefit from their master s will, but become the property of his residuary legatees. tcHF The citizens of Georgetown, D. C, were shocked on Friday last, by the brutal murder of an interesting young girl, by an Irish laborer, who had become enamored of her. Becauw she refused to marry him, he stole into her room at night, and with a knife prepared for the purpose, cut her throat. She survived but a few ruinate, long enough only to tell w ho had jerpctratcd the act The murderer was arrested, and the laborers on the aqueduct w ere so excited by the atrocity of the deed, that they seized him and nearly beat him to death before he wa3 rescued by the officers, who took him to prison.
