NEWS BY TELEGRAPH

Washington June2i Noon. The Mexican Minister authorizes a most cmfat ic denial of the recently publisheJ atatemeot of the sale and cecession of a large portion of Sonora. He says that all decrees issued by the Mexican government, making grants for colonization or other purposc3 have been oflicially published, and that there is not a single instatireof a grant which wars not followed by H authentic announcement of (he fact, that there is none in this case and that without such publication or recession of legal effects. " A private letter from (Jot. Cuminiftfs lays great stress upon t' e impo-'anci of the Mormons Leinz induced to return to their homes and employment. The statement heretofore made, that they are divided into peace and war " partie", is correct and he thinks it is the duty and policy of the government to support the former an 1 brcitk down the latter, lie speaks of Jh-igLam Young as a man of great perseverance, intel-" I ict and experience. Thorc is a division in rhcir ranks: all fear him, while many hate him. . . Cot. Cumtn'ngs plainly says that lis chief hpo for control over the Mormons is exerted through Brig. Young. If any thing should happen, the perils of a c dlision between the army and the Mormon, the country, way expect a real war of sevtral years duration at the expense of many millions of dollars, while the war would Le visited npon those 'least deferring of Its terrors.

St. Loci, June 21 Noon. Hirer fell about 1 foot yesterd.iy. Nearly half the levee clear of water, but cannot be used in consequence of large deposits of mud thereon. All the upper etreams are receding more or less. On the bar at Dubuque, there is 8 feet water and falling. The Missouri is getting low, only 3 feet in the channel being reported. Weather continues clear, dry and

pvery warm.

Alba nt, X. Yn June 23. At 4 o'clock, P. M. a 'fire broke out in a lumber yard on Water "and Orange streets. Owing to a high wind the flames spread rapidly along the piles of lumber and extended to ft lumber yard adjoining Tread well's fur factory, a leather ptore, coal yard, and freight depot of the Central R. It. Co. The efforts of the fireman were directed to the saving of the lattrr, hut the heat was so intense as to render it almost impossible and it is greatly feared that their exertions will not prevent the fire from spreading further. Up to the present time property to the Talue of $-30,000 has been destroyed. The fire is still raging.

Ismanapolh, June 24 Noon, The damage to tho Terre Haute and Alton railroad at the Wabash river has been repaired anil trains are now running through from Indianapolis to St. Louis on regular time. FiTTsurm, June 21 Noon. Hirer 4 feet f inches by the pier mark, and

foiling steadily. Weather clear. Mercury 02. VtscEX.XKS, June 24 Noon. Wab.ish river falling rapidly; fell about five feet in all. More M ar, ."pedal Despatch to b Nw York Tribune. J Washington, June l'. 7: l)ispatches from F.ngland were received an! laid before the Cabinet yesterday. They do not in any substantial form correspond to the expectations of the Administration, or the opinions Authorized by Ird Napier's assurance. While they HiJclaira antbortty for any offensive nets on the part of the cruisers in the Oulf, and are prepared to aiakc reparation to that extent, I hey insist upon the purpose of tm ppressi ng the el.ive trade by determined and effective means. A disposition to exercise the right of visit in the mot acceptable muuner is avowed, and to that end Malmectoiry expresses his willingness and desire to receive any suggestions from the American tioveruineut. The unexpected tone of these dispathes has made much impression in the Cabinet, and it is believed our relations with F.ngland must assume a different character from what has heretofore exigiel.

Arklst of CocNTr.Rrfcrrr.its SitAur Ttt vxsA'riov. On the last trip of the steamer H'g!iHyer from Saint Tunis, two fellows sharp in looks and sharper in action, got on at Chc1 1 r. They seized the earliest moment to press themselves into a prime of Kkcr, in wh'ch they displayed a roll pftdlls, and seemed pptrently very ttushsofcash. One of the playt t observed that .both of the men would put np bills of '20, or $10, aud drawdown the change in tfdd, which immediately disappeared. When another bet was made, a similar trans-clioti would ensue. His suspicious Wins aroused, he examined one of the twenty dollar bills on the 1'ank of Missouri closely, and discovered it was base. He went for the clerk, to be sure, who instantly pronounced it count-

ctfeit. Cap. Tom Wright's attention was dircttel to the operation. lie ordered the men to

be searched, and the result was finding 300

in counterfeit, in '20 bills on the Hank of

Missouri, $10 bills on tho Nothern Itank of Kentucky, and some an a Tenesscc bank. On arrivingat Cape Girardeau Capt.-Wright took then men before a magistrate, detaining

th boat (hat they might not escape for want

of prosecution. He acted lawyer himself, pie

ading that justice be meted out lo the rascals. His appeal was irresistible, for the magistrate

committed them to jail tu default of bail.

thiM jlnce on Saturday la.f, was the best at

tended convention that ever met in this county There wae a larger number of voting demo

The business of the convention was conducted

in a spirit of harmony and conciliation. The

large number of men whose heads bare whit

ened since they first put on the democratic

armor, and who are still devoted to democratic prieiples,' in that convention, gave an uniMistaV ible evidence of tho fact that the democracy of Old Franklin will do their duty nobly in the coining contest, livery candidate was nominated either on the first ballot or by acclamation. Not a dissenting voice was heard in all tho proceedings of the convention. One thing especially was really gratifying I o every true Democrat, that was tho good humored manner in which the creat majority of defeated aspirants acquiesced -in the expressed will of the people. The proceedings of the convention will be found in .another column. Franklin Democrat.
