Cass and the Britisit Outrages. When the British Minister urged our Government, to increase tho American squadron on the coast of Africa, - Gen. Cas3, In his reply, refused to accede to the proposition but suggested to the English diplomatist that the best way to stop the slave trade was to blockade tbe Island of Cuba. This .unfortunate suggestion was seized upon by the British Government, who f immediately sent a fleet of gun boats to the Gulf, to execute it, and by way of elucidating and enforcing the suggestions of our Secretary of State, they are applying tho system to our own vessels. The position of Gen. Cass, in the present difficulty, ig made very awkward by these facts.

Marsh was sitting. - The ball entered Marsh's forehead, bavin? rjierced the rim

of his hat, and ranged downward into his body in a slanting direction: Marsh died immediately from the effects of the wound. Young mado . his escape through the back door of the hotel, and when Last seen be was going up the hill back of tho town.. . The horrible tragedy created great excitement in the quiet town of Brandenburg, and the citizens turned out to endeavor to find tho miir derer, but did not succeed. : - - The murderer was at Corydon, sixteen miles from Brandenburg, five or six hours bafore he committed the deed; from which place he followed his victim across tho river, with a deliberate purpose of perpetrating the act. Marsh was a man fifty or fifty-five years old. His daaghter, several years ago, married the brother of Young, tbe murderer. Some family difficulties grew out of the marriage; and about seven years ago, the father of the Youngs met Marsh at the table of a hotel in Corydon, where some high words ensued. Young threw a fork at Marsh, and the latter drew a revolver and shot at Young across the table, killing him instantly. Marsh was arrested, and after a protracted trial was acquitted on the ground of self-defonsc, aided, it was thought, by tho extreme dislike in which Young was held by the community. A number of the most distinguished lawyers of this State and Kentucky were engaged on

the trial among them Randall, Crawford and Gyy. "Willard, of this State, and Gov. Wickliffe, Ben Hardin, and other,

of Kentucky.

It is said that Young's son3 had taken

a vow that, sooner or later, they would

take rengcanco on the slayer of their

lather. -This, after a lapse of seven years,

has been done by the youngest of them.

The act was unquestionably done in the

most deliberate and premeditated man

ner. Stanley Young, probably learning

that Marsh would be in Brandenburg on

ednesday, provided himself with wca

pons to accomplish his deed of blood, and a swift horse with which to mate bis escape. It is hoped, however, that

ho will yet be arrested. The authorities

on both sides of the river, are in active

pursuit of him.

Devastation by Flooos in "Wabash Valley. The Vincenne Sun presents' the following sad picture of the desolation caused by the floods in that vicinity: Tho earth is everywhere saturated with water. In many places, notLinjr has been done m the way of plowing the ground for planting; corn, or, il it has been done, tho grain have rotted or been waahed up, and all baa to bo done over ajrain. Tho wheat, which a hört time since, looked o promiair, in msny places is now covered with water, und 'n other localities ia becoming to assume a sicklv hue. ' The farmers in Allison prairie, on Tic onpoite side of the river, and a larje numlwr of tho:e in our own county, will mate no effort to raise crops the present season. Their farms are overflown, their fences entirely wntdied away, and other serious damage done. Those at a distance have rro idea of tho immcn?e losses sufforcd by men, too, who are generally illy prepared to bear them. Even bhould tbe weather permit the ground to bo rnt in order in time to risk plantin-, their fields would be entirely at the incrcv of the Hock, with no hype of rcmo-lvinij "the evil this season.. The farmers aro holding on to tlie remains of tho old crop ol gra'u still on hand, and prices are advanc'iii".

THE MOVEMENTS AT SALT LAKE.—Mr. Gerrish, formerly a merchant at Salt Lake, has arrived at Independence, Mo. He passed

through Utah and the Mormon city, on his journey from California, and bring the latest

intelligence of the Mormon movement. He says: "In his journey through the Mormon set-

tlements he was kindly received and entertained. The people were all preparing to leave the Valley. On his way up to the city, he found the road lined with families moving South, among whom, near Provo City, he met Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball, with their families. Brigham himself, how-

ever, subsequently returned to the city, arriving there the evening following Mr. G.'s arrival. He also passed a large number of wagons going up from the Southern settle-

ments to assist the brethren residing in the

northern settlements to move. The current report was that they were all to move to the White Mountains in the south-

western part of the Territory, on the western side of the Great Desert. The women

and children were to move immediately, whilst all the fighting men were to remain as

a rear guard. The families were starting at the rate of two or three hundred wagons a day. The mass of the people, however, are not

favorable to this movement, although they

are preparing to participate in it, and are

earnestly wishing that the army may enter the valley before they start. They are beginning

to open their eyes somewhat to the deception which has been practiced upon them, finding that instead of the Lord fighting for them, as Brigham preached last fall, and destroying their enemies by cold and starvation, and the Indians becoming a battle-axe in their hands

to overcome all adversaries, they now see that our army has passed the winter more comfortably than they have, that the Indians

are nearly all against them, and they have the fact staring them in the face, that they are surrounded on every side and forced to surrender. And yet, so closely are they bound together, so complete are their habit of implicit obedience and subjection to their lead-

ers, that they dare not take the least step, or make the least effort, towards throwing off, themselves, the yoke of oppression which

goads them. They simply rest content in the hope and desire that the United States army will yet arrive in time to relieve them. They have not planted any crops of im-

portance this spring, and have not as is usual at this season, commenced making and planting their gardens, but instead, are pack-

ing up and boxing up provisions which they

estimate to be more than one year's supply in wheat and flour.

The foundation of the Temple have been carefully covered up and protected.
