TUESDAY MOBSIKU .
. ... .may 5 The Southern Convention, that has
he'd its session at Montgomery this year, after committing rcoro absurdities, and
nnking-itself more supremely ridiculous
by its discussion?, than ever before, ad
journed to meet at Vicksburg, m May,
18GO, giving the country two year3 relief from another doe of its nonsen.se. It seems to have produced äs much disgust at the South as at ' ths Korth, by its puerilities and vagaries. Tho Augusta Chronicle in noticing its prccceOings says: "We hire long since ceasoi to occupy our cohmiM with such rniserablü trash mat (jut. For nxt to the Smithsonian Institute, we h.ie It'iijr remarried theso conventions as the greatest humbtir: of tie oc." Several of the leading South Carolina pipers who were ninoiig the first in calling these conventions into existence, are now heartily ashamed of their proceedings and laugh ard condemn their act without even a show of decent respect for tha lionarabla eentlcmen who colli-! . 0 I pose me ooay. ino uarunnian, juulished at the seat of government, condemns tho discussions as extravagant, foolish and impracticable, and says they have done much more harm than good. It adds: "there is, however, no need of surprise, as gintlcmen go there to talk and they must have something to talk about. Many of them cannot get to Congress, so that, for constitutional relief, they must resort to tho convention, to let off their unconsumed patriotism." Manyother of the leading Southern pa pers, speak disparagingly of the convention and condemn its course without stint or reserve. Maryland, for the first time, refused to send any delegates, and was unrepresented. The Virginia mem bersjopposed most of the projects Lroached in the convention and did not seem to have much sympathy with the spirit that ruled the conclave. The doings of the last convention w ill probably prove fatal to its successor. It is doubtful, if, after two year's reflection, another ever assembles. The members seem to have been all struck with tho hallucination" that the entire North is arrayed in hostility to the Sjuth that it is antagonistical in every form and Southern unity becomes necessary upon the score of sclf-preser-va'tioru. The terrible spectre of Northera aggression disturbs the visions of every Speaker, in the discussions of every theme. The question of disunion was freely debated and found sokc warm advocates. The problem of slavery in all its forma was discussed. The policy of re-opening the African slave trade, was vindicated and various cthsr measures equally radical and destructive' found advocates. The report on tho re-opening tbc slave trade, is the most outrage0113 in iU doctrine.?, and the richest for the cool method of its lunacy. It begins with canlidW admitting that tlw qutiuu now pending in the United State between slave labor und f'i 00 labor is precisely neith-.T inure nor loss than the question between aristocracy an 1 democracy, "it is ob vioas," says thus report, " that two distinct auci uutazunlatic form of society have met lor the contest upon the arena or' this Union. The one" mcauiu, no doubt, tho system of the Free Stales 'u.-suineb that all men lire Cinal, nd that equality is riebt, and forming upen that theory , is ttrainuij its mcinK-rs to the horizontal niuin 01 u democracy Thi other" th.it is, ths ?)tetu of the slave States "aumes that all men ure not equal; that equality is not right, therefore; und, Termiug upon this theory, is taking on itseif t..l .,1 f.rm n viitci.il At it.tHriu" The report admits th.it the "popular ideal of the"ae-' 'l iti lavor ol tho termer fv.tem; but, on tlr.tb'.r liatut, the tact of the exis-t-en;e of domestic t-lavery i u.'bumevl to jTuve not only that the "rounded loria of a hocial ari.Htoeraey" is the ''embodiment of a living social truth," but as establishing also, be yond the reach of doubt, tue preliminary iioint of iti boin right "to bring the neio by coaipuUiou to a file of labor." Human society never was intenJoo.so this reKrt maintains, "to o iiaiat forever ol Mt iinarticulated maart of j-uio democracy.' AVhaiever Huiti have come to greatues.i Lave exhibited the condition of unequal tlaaics. !o btato ever yet biirvivcd tho lc..s et euch political distinctions, "lloino perished ia a military democracy; i'runce latins cii despotism fcineu the natural props of 0ciul ora.r Lavo bven striokeu down" rcferling, we btippose, to the uboiitiun of privilcgea vrdcrs and eveu now it might bo painful to consider "what wouid bj tho iSorih without the South.' Thcstf diatinctions, Lowover, though necessary e very w hero iu coiaraunities consisting of only one race, itre artificial, and therefore liable to yield to the force of gravity. The only ure guaranty lor the perpetuity of "tho rounded form of a Bocial uib.ocracy," without which there can hi no national gre itncs, is to have at hand a naturally inferior race, roch aa tho negroes are assaüied to be, whu can bo kept under forever; and the jresonce therefore of this inferior race in the Southern States, and its multiplication there, so far from beirg a thing to be latneuted. holds out to thoo State "the promise oi a brighter future than has ever ODeiied to the hotesof man."' But to justify and uphold this union of unequal races is to jus;uy tue mean 01 us formation. An allirmaueo of Slavery, po the report conteuds, is, iu prineit le and etlect, au aurinance of the foreign Slave-trade. Prescription, as a basis for Slavery, i scout ed. "It were asiust to hid that the inipvis onmcnt cf a man for one year will warrant his imprisonment for another, and for lite It next proceeds to the questions whether tue revival ol this trade wul benetit the ue rroea of Africa, and, if "no, whether it will . 1 - . 1 1.' ... 1 1 . . 1 alio oeneni tue cou.n,aiiu comes 10 um con chision it will be a bleiaing to both. What the South want-i political power. SliJ must either rule or be ruled. The purrose on the part of tho Northern States is to .a . ä a . COatrcl tne vovemnieiih, ana tnrongn me Government the Sodth Tnere is no way of deflating that purpose except by increasing the population and the number of Slave fi:afftj. TLa mere introduction of free popnlatioaicU the South will not answer. ThVr are too many freer opie thero already, ' ty f.r. For tha purpose of extending slavery, elavea are worth more than iree iun. len thousand Southern master made a .noble etand to rescue Kansas, and faileJ. The company had not confidence in the Legislature, Gov ernor, and Judges of the Supreme court, to entrust them with the bribe be fore they lud done their service: and the officials in their turn, were so suspicious of the company, that they would not consumate tho matter till the booty was secured beyond chance. Their dealings disclose the mutual estimate they had of each other's honor. The disclosure is the most degrading and startling in the his tory of jHjlitical corruption in this country. It is a disgusting revelation, and one that must arouse popular attention to the imminent danger to the public v'ltue au 1 safety. In this case, the Governor, the Supreme court, thu Legislature, the editors of nearly all the prominent journals, the leaders of the Republicans, tho Democrats and tho Americans all the organs and guardians of the public interests, accepted the bribe, and sold themselves and the State for a price. A TtJ'T ur Sincerity. Among tbe nn tuerous hovlcties who have held their anniversaries recently in New York, and publisJivd statements of their f.nnncin conJiti'jn, is one that ha ns.r.iucd the name of "Tl3 Comi'ensatinjj Emancipation .Society." Us object J, to promote emancipation o( slaves, by compensating their masters fully or partially for their loss in letting them go free. Anu ria the hundreds of magnificent charters that aro collecting anJ disbursing thousands and hundreds of dollars for dis tant and doubtful objects, this humble as sociation lor a home work to aid in the re moval of a tvrong wlo.e evils have convuls ed the country, puts down ivs whole receipts lor the yciir at $190, not moic than the price ol a good field hand for tl.c vatno period. Where thousands can Le raised to inculcate fal-c impressions und simulate sectional lute, not one dollar can Ic pot to take out a rivel from the haekles of a tingle slave. Such an association might do much good, iu ' umeron vaw wnere benevolent prsns own slaves that they are disposed t emancipate, but cannot make the entire Ijss without biinging themselves to beggary, but who would lot them go for a third or half their value, if lliev could secure their freedom. Thero arc sometimes children bjrn in slavcrv from the intercourse of out cast white men witli blacks, whose African origin it i diflicult to detect. These slaves on a plantation, r.re i.u eyo uorc to the slave owner; the sight of Lis o;v:i eoler and features degraded to idavcry is a constant oifjiisj to Lis feelings, und a living reproach of tho injustice und wrong of tho isistitution. TliOae slaves, if removed in infancy, their origin would never ba known to themselves or others. .They arc unsaleable 0 slaves, and for many reasons masters are glad to get rid of them. A few theusends could hi annually expended on such objects, and relieve slavery from no of its most odiou and degrading sights that of a white man in slavery to hia own color. OCT The bills of . the. Citizens' 13ank at Gosport, with which the interior counties of this State were Hooded in harvest and hog killing time last year, can be exchanged for the notes of a New Jersey wild cat Lank. Mr. V. D. Alex ander, who issued the Gosport bills, finding himself responsible, by the laws of this State for his issues, is anxious to have them exchanged for the notes of a bank where the responsibility cannot be so directly brought home to him. The people prefer to hold on to the notes that have some guarantee for payment, under our own laws, rather than pursue a New Jersey soap bubble. Mr. Akson G. Phelts, a well known New York merchant, of the house of Thclps, Dodge & Co, fell dead at his own residence on Thursday night last, from some affection of the heart. He was the son of old Mr. Anson G. Phelps, ona of tha moat .eminent merchants in Xew York, for fifty; years, and he had succeeded to the, wealth, business, and influence of his father. Ho was highly esteemed for his beneyolcnce, public sDirit and trlT'i,fe rlrtnea.

Col.. IEMTOX OX LlSCOMl'TOXISM. Mr. VVm. C. Jones, son-in -law of Col. Tonton, has published a letter denying that Col. The conversation in which he is understood to have stated his anti-Lccompton views most freely, was with Francis 1. Iilair, jr. Representative or the St. Louis District a warm and attached friend of Hen ton's, ilr. I51air, it is supposed, nil reply to Mr. Jones' letter. In tho mean while, the Xew York Tribune furnishes a "settler" for Mr. Jones, which it wilj be hard for him to recover from: The biography of Mr. Ucnton, in Apple ton's New American Cyclopedia, copied into The Tribune 011 the 10th ol April Ut. Therein it is announced that Mr. J '.en ton zealously opposed the Admiiiistratiou of l.nchnnan, and inclined to unite with the " opposition that presented itself in tlio Kek publienn party." SUCCESS TO THE CASH SYSTEM! Four Reasons why 1 wish to continue it. First Since I adopted the cah system, on the 1st of last February, I have experienced that a penny often turned, i more profitable than a dollar in book accounts. Skco.n I csn sell poods much chesper, as I hive no losses to make up by selling good, on credit. Third I ean keep a better asrte.l rt-K-W, and am alwsvs ready to take a bargain which I was cot, a hen I litdlnstto depeud upon collections, and will sell them at the tame. Ft'DRTii I find It easier to sell goods for cash, than eolket the money for goods sold a year w more ago, and besides be insuhed for 4vsutin2 a a till. I have jnst reeeived a second supply, and am prepared to defy any competition, and hope to offend none by refusing credit, as I shall refuse all as here lofore.
