The circumstances that led to his removal from Nashville to Mississippi, arc related in a letter from Col. Our carriage broke down near the house where he was living, a short distance from Nashville, nine years ago last fall. Yo were so captivated with his unaffected frankness, heartiness, and general intelligence, that without knowing who ho was, I gave him an urgent invitation to visit us. I sent fur him and he came and staid two' or thicc weeks, and all of us were delighted with him. . He foully concluded to rb move to our town, bag and baggage, and said ho would stay with us until I could locate him in some good place in tho country. The Shakers who came to us always spoke in the highest terms of the Doctor, and their relations, as far as I could learn, were mutually pleasant. I knew members of the society well had every confidence in their goodness, and wa3 sura they would treat him kindly. I believe ho regarded mo as his warmest friend, and was probably trying to make his way to our house when ho died. We heard from Mr. CRiley that he was at Evansville, and we had rcsolvcd to tako care of him if ho arrived, as long as ho lived. We thank, in tho namo of God, the kind gentlemen who ministered to him in ht3 sickness, and paid t decent respect to his memory when dead. He was much beloved by us. Ho gave us but little information in regard to his family. He received letters from a sister in England, while with us, but her name and residence I do not recollect, lie grieved much over the loss of his half breod son Oeorgo. Scarcely a day passed but he would utter some words of sorrow over his fate. IIo was a great blessing to our family, and was an instrument in the hands of God, in restoring the health of our son, now a hearty boy. lie fully compensated us for all we did for him in his helplessness. Dr. Ilolmes camo to South Union alout seven years since, in a very helpless and dependent condition was advised to make his way here, by his excellent friend. Col. Vanec, of Hernando, Miss., with whom he hud been boarding; and to whom, of late, he was jrrcatly anxious to return. We received him kindly, though we viewed him as an uncommon stranger; yet, ho gave every assurance, of which he was capable, that he would comply with every virtuous or religion romircment that would be demanded of the most humble votary of our faith, although he had not a full understanding of ns as a people further, than informed bv his friend Vance! He was at that time parafyzed in on holeside dead , as it were ih the :ime, and almost powerless; but from whieh, by careful treatment, he finally recovered some and could holp himself with more ability. We, however, provided him a comfortable room; and for the past 3ven years have attended v nis wants, and for which, most ofthat he was art te bo unreasonably extreme; and on the other hand, ns greatly the reverse towards those, for whom ho tormcd a dUdikc. He continued in this state of feeling till within a year or more beforo his withdrawal, at times manifesting mnch restlessness and disquietude. Those best acquainted vrith his case, conceived the cause to be, the retired condition in which ho was necessarily placed, being so contrary to his former habits and inclination; and in addition to this, tho increasing inflammation of his eye, seemed to irritate his brain and nervous system, an! give a force to his feelings of disquietude, that he was unable to govern. About a week previous to his departure, he walked o.T a railo and a half to a public Louso on the road, without gi virg any knowledge to tho tamily of his absence.
