WEDNESDAY MORNING....... . MAY 11 Dr. Holmes The publication of the circumstances attending the death of Doctor Holmes, has brought to us several letters from persons 'who knevt him in London and this country they disclose a fate so renmkable, that we think some of the letters of sufficient interest to present to our readers. Doctor PeckoTer, a highly respected physician of Paris, Uourbon county, Ky.r who receded his medical education under Doct. Holmes, m Lon don, writes under date of the 5th inst, as follows: "I feci much gratified and obliged by your liinJ attention to my inquiries, respecting Doct. J. P. Holmes. I qoite approve of the plan of the gentlemen, who nave bis effect in charge, to erect a monument to one who was beloved by all who knew bim. Mr ac quaintance wittt him commenced in the Spring of 1827, after his return from the ser vice of the Iladion Bay Co., and continued till 1832, when I left England for this coun try; for two years of that time, I lived prin cipally in his family. There were two other students beaido myself, Mr. Bird and a Mr Holraan, ono "of whom, at least, was studyin? at Doct. Holmes' expense. The Doctor married, lato in life, very beautiful and ac complished young lady. They never had any children, lie had a half breed son, by an Indian wife, whilo in the Hudson Bay Company's territories, whom lie was educating in England. What became of bim I do not know. He had no other family that I ever beard of. His wife bad one sister, whose name 1 havo forgotten The Doctor was a mcrabsr of the College of Surgeons, and also of the "Medical Society of BoltCourt." He was also a member of the conw mon Council, of London, from tbo ward in which he lived, which was, I think, Dowgato. The last time I saw bim, was in 1339, whilo I was on a visit to London. He was still living in his old home in Great Fish street, and had an office somewhere in the West end of London, where he treated consumptive patients on a plan of inhalation. He bad published a work on consumption, which gave hint high repute, and was known to the profession by '.be titlo of "Holmes on consumption and asthma."
