' We are of course inclined to support every proper measure that will give employment to our craft; but we 'doubt very much whether the expense will be approved by those whose favor is to be conciliated by this vote. The translation must be made by one familiar with legal technicalities and terms both in German and English, and with the nice philological distinctions in both languages. Such a person cannot be procured to ' do the work for less than $150, and it will cost another $150 to print and bind it. An expenditure of $300 or $400 for draining and improving the streets would be more acceptable to our thrifty German citizens, than the presentation of a book which not a dozen of them a a aea would nave occasion to use. 1 na ex penditure is voted not to confer any real rood upon the German citizens, but to latter them for their votes, at some coming election. It is bribing them with their own money taxing them to pay the expense of a thing that can be of no use to them or any body else; and they are shrewd enough to understand such movements, and will estimate the flattery atiu true value.
