THURSDAY M0RNIM1 APRIL 22 Grapes and Wine. The suggestions of our correspondent
are worthy the notice of our wine raisers. From the specimens tre havo tested, we are persuaded, we have wine here equal to any natire wine in the country. Some of it has been sent over the mountains and been pronounced excellent by the best judges of wiha in the Eastern cities. Our soil and climate are pecu-. liarly adapted to the grape, and tho time is not distant when tho vintages on the Ohio will be more celebrated in the world than those of the Rhine. A few years hence and we shall see tho amphi
theatre of beautiful hills to the Northwest our city, clothed with vineyards, whose harvests will add an important item to the commerce of the city. The profits of wine-growing aro almost incredible. A late California paper says Mr. Ktnerson near Las Angelos, in that State, has a vineyard of six acres, with 6,400 stalks in it, from which he made last year C.700 gallons of wine, and sold it for $8,125. Another vineyard of CO acres in tho same vicinity produced 150,000 bottles of "sparklipg California," which, at the market price, was worth $212,000 allowing one half for the expenses, interest, and so forth, and a profit of $100,000, or $1,CGG per acre remains. Our vines are not as productive as the California grape, but 500 to 800 gallons per acre have frequently been produced on the Ohio. TV. a fatm .rnnrinianti tVint. Tlie creat difficulty with our wine is, that it is broojjht into market too soon. It has not m enough. There Is too great a demand for It, and not enough manufactured to supplj the wants here. OCT The princely fortune of Col. Fremont, appears to be in danger of being swept away by a recent decision of the Supreme Couit, of California. The Mariposa grant was confirmed to him by the United States Court, and he took possession of it, under that decision, and
by aid of the State authorities, lie granted leases to flh occupants of it, and among others, in April 1857, he made one to the Mercer Mining Company at a rent of $1.000 per month. The Com paoy had occupied the land for six years preiiously, and had expended $800,000 in machinery and improvements. The suit was brought to recover damages and the Dossession from Fremont. The points made in the case were 1 Whether the title to the niinera passed to Col. Fremont with his confirm ed grant to tho real estate. 2 Whether, conceding that it did not, defendant had the right to extract the gold while the title in fee simple of the land is in the lessor cf the phintiir. The court held that in the ontna grant, the mineral rights were reserved to the government of Mexco, and passed by the treaty of cession to the govern meat of tho United States, and have not passed from tho United States to Col Fremont by the confirmation of his title, He has acquired no more than was pos sessed by the original Mexican grantee from whoso grant the Mexican Govern ment reserved the gold. Th court dc cided that an owner of a Mining claim had a good vested title to the property till his title is divested by the exercise of the superior right of the sovereign pro prietor. Judgement was given for the lessees. According to this decision, th Federal Government is the owner of all gold, quick silver, iron, copper, sil ver, diamonds, and what not, that exists in California, and they may be taken by any onC till such a time as the govern ticed upoa in tho transfer of land coverin mineral richU in all the States. But the reservation of the mineral right is . ,. , i i. . . not complete unless the right to enter upon the Und to mine and remove the minerals is also retained by the Original grantor.
