A Day Among thG Machinery We bless the intentors, and hail eyery improvement in machinery, that saves human labor and increases production, as an unmixed good. Tho cencral con union or the people has been greatly A. a ameliorated by the advancements made in the mechanical and manufacturing aits. They are better clothed better lodged and better fed, and the lowest laborer now enlors comfort3 that the richest Lord could not obtain a century ago. Yet we never enter a machine shop without a sigh, nor leave it without a sad foreboding of the future. Machinery is making mighty conquests, but its conquests are all for the most inexorable and sslfiih tyrant on earth. In the contest between labor and capital, machinery becomes the slare and instrument of the latter. It is working in the free States precisely what slavery has done in tho slave States as far as it is practicable. It expels independent labor. It is driving out tho individuals who work for themselves. It is crushing the small shopmen the middle classes of mechanics and the independent laborers. Hand labor can no longer compete with ma chinery, the small establishments of 9 - - moderate capital cannot long succeed by the side of those operated upon a large scab with every modern improvement in machinery. As a consequence, all our small workshops are absorbed by large factories. Horse shoes, and the nails to put them on, are now made at the East for every village blacksmith in the country. The hubs, felloes, shafts, and all the parts of a wagon are made at tbt large factory for the village wheelwright who has now only to put them together. A few more inventions, and the occupa tions of the village blacksmith, wheelw w wright, shoemaker, tailor, and cabinet maker will all be gone; they will become employees in large factories owned and controlled by capital. The private woia shops ill be ruined by the machinery of the large establishments, as surely as the spinning jenny and the power loom have silenced the domestio spinnin wheel and the hand loom. What is to becomo of the large class ef independen labor or?, who have been their own mas tcrs and performed their own work, and who have constituted the middling in terest classes the back bone and sinew of society, in every emergency. Must
they descend into the condition of "op- deceits origin from.the Lecompton conerauTes"and haYe their hours of stitution or gOYernmfnt. It was dislabor and rest their wages their re- vinctly understood, by it, that the con-
hgious and political opinions prescribed to them by capital by the owners- of the machines that have conquered them in the competition of cheap production, Machinery is dividing society into tiro distinct classes placing them aa tar asunder as tne poles, ana creating an impassable cuil between tnem. it is miking the rich, richer and the poor, poorer. Wherever capital can buy labor cr the agent of pnoduction in the form of a machine, or in that of a negro, it crushes out free uncapitalized individual labor and enterprise. The law of cause and effect is the same whether the agencies of labor, owned by capital, be the black human machine or the black iron machine Capital in every department of industry is becomincr all powerful. It 13 subjugating labor in all its forms te it? control. Instead of approaching tho equality of a free democratic condition, the tendency of tt ir
dustrial and commercial affairs now is of her bustle untH a littJe darkie just beto increase the power of capital Mid to hind exclaimed at the top of nis voice, accumulate it in- large masses in a few "Lor God A'mighty, do believer dat hands and to make the great body of nigger is made ob newspapers!" 7his tho peoplo subject to its control. One raised the lady's ire,- when she retorted of the fatal discoveries of modern times by exclaiming, "you fool boj, dais what ia the power ef concentrated capital. Miss makes lern ob.'y
Money like men when scattered is weak and not dangerous. But combined lite men marsiiaiica in an army, under the control of a single leader it may conquer an empire or overehrow the liberties of a republic. Banks and corporations are modern schemes to combine capital, and marshal it as an army to subdue the laber of a province. And how vast have been its silent conquests! and how threatening is the future aspect of its career! If Europe trembled at the ambitious and selfish designs of Napoleon, who contemplated the conquest of the world: how much more fearful are tho prospects of the growing power of accumulated capital over the interest and liberties of the masses.
