THURSDAY MOUSING APRIL 1 Lecompton. To day is set apart for final action by the House oh this vexed question. tv"hat the result will be is doubtful. Both sides, judging from the reports of the letter writers, feel confident of suc cess. The caucus of the Lecompton and nti-Lecompton Democrats resulted in nothing. As might have been known, the chasm between them is too wide to bo easily bridged over. The struggle, from present indications, will be fierce and well contested. Mr. Stephens, chairman of the Houae Committee on Territories will move to take the Senate's Kansas Bill from the table. Then, the Crittenden amendment will be proposed. Tha previoui question will be moved and sustained, and the debate thu3 cut off, the battle will be carried on by calling the roll, and noting down the portentous ayes and noes.

"We trust the unanimity among the opposers of the fraud will seal its fate forever, but we cannot forget the power of Executive patronage, nor, (what a shame t& bo compelled to acknowledge it!) that Congressmen can be bought and sold. We hope there will bo no filibustering on tha part of the opposition. The issue is fairly made up and the whole country understand it fully. The fact that a Democratic President is bending all the power of the Government to force a Constkuthra upon an unw'lling people, is sufScieat to make tho cheek of every rmtriot tinzle with shame. The love of country is the same South a3 North. Patriotism is confined to no one section. . Every honest man North or South, can but exclaim with the noble Crittenden, "In the same manner that I would resist oppression myself, 1 will opposAwhen the attempt is made to force it upon others. Let the result bo- as it may, the Ad ministration of James Buchanan is doomed. The destruction of the Army Bill, and the murder of its darling Kansas project will be more than it can sur vive. Shoald Lecompton pass, it wil be swept away by the indignation of an outraged people. . English Dank Swindlers. The directors of tho Iloyal British Bank, in London, are all convicted of swindling and robbery, after a thirteen days' trial at the bar of the Old Bailey standing ia the rery place once occupied by Greenacre, Hocking, Curvoisierthe Mannings, and others. The presiding judge, Lord Campbell, is very much blamed by the press and the public of England for the comparatively light punishment to which he sentenced them. Yet he consigned the whole batch, with one exception, to the pnson of Newgate. Tho notorious Humphrey Brown, formerly member of Parliament for the borough of Tewksbury was sentenced to twelve months imprisonment. Two others were awarded a like punishment. The rest were res pectively sentenced to nine, six, and three months imprisonment, and one (who happens to be brother to a peer) was let off, though convicted, with the fine of a shilling. The Government, who instituted the prosecution f gainst the unworthies of the Boyal British Bank, clearly knew what their duty was, and strictly performed it. The cost of this trial, we mean the mere cost of the prosecution, is estimated at $iv0.000, and it is money well spent like that on Sir John Dean Paul's case if it shows that rank, station, and ill-got ten wealth shall not protect flagrant cul prits and public robbers. OCT The Cincinnati Gazette of Thurs day contains four columns concerning the religious interest in that city. There are five or six morning prayer meetings held in the largest churches in the city, and thousands of business men assemble every morning to ask God's blessing be fore engaging in the active duties of life. and the whole community seems to be deeply impressed. At Louisville on Sat urday, a prayer meeting was held at noon in Masonic Hall, the largest room in the city, if not in the State. The Courier says that the Hall was so crowd ed that meetings were organized in the ante-rooms. Thus it is seen that the interest in this matter is spreading from city to city, and from town to town, and who can tell where it is to stop. Although the good work is progressing in this city, yet the. movement is not as general as in other places. It is strange that the business men of this city Lave not time to attend to this matter, when in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Cin cinnati and St. Louis the business mer chants can leave their business for an hour each day to go up to the house of prayer. Public services this evening in the Methodist and Vine street Presby terian churches. Prayer meeting at M r. McCarers church this morning at eight o'clock, and at the Methodist church a nine o'clock. All are invited to attend fjr The contest for municipal officers in St. Louis is becoming quite animated Two tickets are in the field, one ßup ported by the Democrat, called the free labor ticket; the other by the Repubii canr called tho Citizen ticket.

The excellence of Mr. Behm's system o( book keeping has been often alluded to in these columns, and it is a gratifying fact to the friends of the institution, that its graduates are amonz the most reliable and expert book keepers in the The School Trustee. J A3. E. Blythe Esq., has been spoken of by many citizens as a candidate for this office. As we said yesterday, the office is one of great importance, and I should be filled by a competent and energetic nan. We say upon the author ity of "many Toters," that if Mr. Blythe will consent to run, ho will be elected bv a handsome maioritv. ' OCT We learn from the Louisrille Journal that arrangements are now be ing made for the establishment of a national race course near that city. An organization has already been perfected, and a committee annointed to solicit sahsenptions. The aliedsed object, is the improvement of blooded stock. The main object, doubtless, is visible in the following paragraph from . that paper: "The success of this undertaking is of no little importance to the citizens of Louis Tille. It will be the means of bringing, upon frequent occasions, a rast concourse of strangers to our oity and of adding no little to the receipts of our hotels and tradesmen of erery class."
