A term prevailed at Yincennes on Saturday, which broke down tho telegraph wires and cut off our despatches. By Saturday Night's Mails. CourEssiox or a Wirt Iürdeber. Geo. II! Lamb, wht was arrested at Mendota, 111., on suspicion of having durJered his wifo a fair months after their rriarrlifc, as stated in the Journal of Wednesday last, has mado a full confusion of the awful crime. It will be recollected that ho took his wlfo from her father's lioue, in Illinois, under tho pretence of going to Memphis to live. He returned to Mendota a month or two afterwarJs with his wife's wardrobe, and stated that aha had died at Memphis. He was, shortly after his return marriod to another girl in tho neigh borhool. The father of his first wife wish ing to erect tombstone to the memory of his daughter, wrote to Memphis onthatbusi ness, but found no such person had died or been buried there; and on further investiga tion, ho learned his daughter had never been seen after leaving a boarding house 'in St. Louis, with her husband. Other circum stances aroused suspicion, and Lamb was arrested and taken to St. Louis, where he has rilado a confession of his guilt of tho awful allegations. He states that on or about the itth of December, the day of his leaving the Astor House on Franklin avnue, St. Louis, ha purchased a skiff for seven dollars, embarked in it with his wife and two men, und after proceeding a' few miles down the river, he forcibly drovtned his wife, by holding her head under the water. He added that bo then t!d ft atone to hef and sunk her in the river. Bode dHys before Christmas, a black skiff, in which ve'rb three men, landed just below Carondelct; that the three men got out, shoved tho skiff adrift, auct paeeed off down the road it is Hot known where. Tho skiff was soon picked Up arid is still in possession of certain parties at Carondelct. If it is the one which Lamb states he bought, pfobably tho person who sold it to hm can be found to identify it, and also to identify tho perk on of Lamb, by which so much of tho w'ctch'a story will be substantiated. It spears that Lamb confessed his guilt to his lawer, Mr. Strain, before leaving Mendota, and rcr since his arrest he has borne himself as though he could not keep a secret which was tho causO of so much misery to hira. He seems to be awv re that ho is going to die, and has expressed a desire to bo visited by clergy daily. He a lifo is a burden, and ho will willingly submit to the punishment of the law, ouly wishing time enough to prparo his soul to meet it .final Judge. FROM SAM 1 FE. The Louisville papers of Fri day are filled with accounts of the late rare between tho Baltic and Dna. Both boats passed down Saturday evening and they may leave New Orleans at the same time. If o, the Diana will doubtless endeavor to win back tho ''horns." Tux J. II. The David Whita was waiting Saturday to transfer her cargo to the T. C. Twitchcll, and exchange trips with her. The White will return to Louisville, when, we understand, she will bo dismantled and her cabin and engines transferred to a new hull. She is badly broken and it is doubtful whether she could have proceeded with her trip to New Orleans in safety.
