The fclave Trade). Tho subject of tho importation of negroes from tho coast of Africa into' Louisiaua, ongrossca a largo sharo of publ;c attention, and
charged in warning tho t-coplo of every new I it is said to bo tho subject of indignant do
attempt to sell their opinions for tub Inter- I nunciation by ninctecn-twcntictha of the
Shameless Falsehood.
Tho strikers of Senator Bright have
already began the party drill with the
determination to introduce through this Statd tho Austrhn rulo and proscription
that have been initiated at Washington
These men hare resolved to silence the
almost unanimous voice of the Democ
racy of the State. The following paper
discloses the first act of the scheme in
this District. The paper alluded to de
clares the Democracy of the Pocket to
be a unit in its support of (he' Kansas Policy of the Administration, and the Judge is therefore urged to vote tor the Lecompton Constitution, and thereby sustain Mr. Iuchanan. A more audacious and reckless falsehood was never proclaimed. - The signers of the letter to Judge XiMack, have placed their names to a mistatcment, that every one of them would blush to utter individually. We have tho names of many of them, and as soon as the list is complete we will givo it to our readers, for their inspection and admiration. We fully coincide with the feelings expressed by our friend in the following paper: "We have from unquestionable authority
that during tho paat week a secret paper was circulated by the leaders of tho sham democ
racy of Evansville among the more pliable of
tho faithful, and forwarded in form of in
structions to Judge Niblac'?, representing it to be the wish of tho Democratic party in
this vicinity that that gentleman should
cast his' vott in favor, of the admission of
Kansas into the tlnion under tho Lecompton
Constitution. Tho delcctablo document in
question obtained tho signatures of about
$renty persons.'' Among them were all tho federal oifico holders in and about Evansvillc, with such other as their inflnencc could control, for the moat part persons who arelookiug for office and emolument at tho hands or through the influence of would-be-party leaders. They are fit representatives of a class of men whoso opinions and feelings are
always made to depend upon tho amount of
the reward they Teceive for blowing some demagogue's favorite trumpet. There Is no iniquity connected with the political world
too monstrous to find followers, if upon its advocacy a share of tho loaves and fishes depend. The very men who prate contin
ually and howl fiercely about tho rljhtt nf
th4 peopl are tho one who aro always reudy to sell tboso rights for a me5s of pottag, or sometimes for a. meaner consideration. Juius betrayed his Master for thirty pieces of silver, but the reward was a largo ono compared with the emoluments of some of the petty offices, to obtain which dishonest men are willing to barter tho rights and interests of tho people. A single village post office is worth tlia principles of half the professional politicians in the village. Tho patronage of a marine hospital or a two-penny custom house is worth more to the class of men who
' set themsolvea up as tho manufacturers of
public opinion than even tho interests of tho
Union itself. Had they the power tho peddlers of public opinion, who abound in every town where tho federal government has posts to let, would rend this Union in fragments, if by the rupture the number of dependences could be increased. They are venal hirelings, without honest opinions or conviction?, ready at all times to sell their services for tL smallest possible reward. Turn out of federal offico to-day every Locomptonit0 in the land and the deafening cry of "antiLecompton" will swell upon every breeze, and ring in every cur from Maine to California. The opinions they profess are not their own. They are but tho representative feelings of men high in power at tho seat of government. Remove tho baneful influence of Executive patronago and tho unfaithful dependent who now exalt tho Lecompton Constitution to the skies and sing hosannas to the Administration will out-Herod Herod in the vileness of the vituperation they will pour upon the devoted head of James Buchanan.. It is this class of men who have presumed to instruct oor mit representative in Congress upon the state of public feeling in Vanderburgh county. Tho petition was circulated stealthily, persons of known anti Lecompton views being carefully avoided that they might not have even a knowlcdgo of its existence. Knowing that it bore a falsehood
upon its face, the authors took good care not
to let the precious document be seen by any
except ttcif Own corrupt adherents. Had wo tho names of air who signed the paper we
would lay them before an outraged public, in
order that the . odium of their dishonest
transaction might cling to their skirts, and they receive as they deserve the contempt
and scorn of public indignation. We feel ourselfto bo right when wo say nine-tenths of the Democracy of this county
est of a favored few.
For the Journal.! Mr. Carmle: Yonr correspondent ''Citizen," is nja'te of the right metal. He is a "? School" man in earnest, and that is
the kind we vr&nt juit tow. The voters of Evansvillc are to decide at tho coming municipal election whether their present admi ruble system of rcliool shall be continued, or whether they shall bo suspended, and tiAten Kundrtd children bo turned out to indolence and ignorance. I understand that tho it ayor of this city has stated publicly that
homonitt should bo appropriated from the
City Treasury for thoBupport of the Schools, if he could prevent it. It this be true, I do not envy the position of his honor. Are'the schools tobosuspendod at tho bidding of tho
Mayor? Are the pcoplo of Evansville fcrfs
and slave, that they will bow to so contempt
people. Tho Courier exposes the inconsistency of the Legislature in proposing, by one
bill, to prohibit tho introduction of free negroes, and to sell into slavery thoso free
negroes who remain in tho State contrary to
the provisions of the act. while another bill
is passed authorizing the importation of
twenty-five hundred Africans. The propo
sition to introdnce free negroes from Africa, to
work them for fifteen years, and then to sei
them into slavery because found in the State
is denounced by tho press as "most abhor rent to the constitutional ideas of the South
ern people;" an unmitigated, transparent fraud; and an effort to revive the slave trade
under the hypocritical disguise of a word. Al
the objections exist to it that ever existed to
the slave trade, and without a solitary re
deeming feature. If the negroes aro to be real apprentices, and cot slaves, to bo frco at tho expiration of their time of service, then

These facts prove that picklo will
