THE HbLIlWOl "Wo note as one of the "sijjns of the times' J
the remarkably earnest state of leeling now
manifested in the public mindin re crence to ?m
the subject of religion. It is evident that the country Is about entering upon an era of
remarkable religious excitement. The move--a,. t t.r- 5n Xw York
J v City, where prayer mcetiugs are daily held in different parts of the city, to which men of business crowd by thousands Bunting West from w York, tha Eeival aa it is tech-
. - w nkallr called, has reached Pituburir. Cin- . ' . . . . . m thus manitcstea mast do mcreaaca ramcr han slackened. The secular press of the country seems to be deeply interested in the progress of this devotional tide-wave, and aro watching rith solicitude iU effect upon the country; A reference to the history of tho subject hows that during the last century, at irregular in tervals, there have been marked by religious V.h nnt anno tn rafp The last rePetition of the conver.ional fervor diffused itself throughout the country about 'J m r a.1 . a. a. a. t I 1 twenty-nve years ago. Mnce mai urac uie relieious sentiment has not been advanced by any sadden and; general ; movement,'. hut has grown stronger and deeper by a comparatiTcly gradual advance. Within the last fortnight, the public mind has been aroused upon the subject, and as we read the accounts of prayer meetings, special service and in- . qairy meetings, held all over the country, we are convinced that the American people are standing upon tho threshold of a religious revolution, fraught, as we hope, with great consequences to individuals and States. In this city, within the last week, special meetings have been held, and others are con templated. We can only utter the fervent wish that they may be crowned with tho auc cess which has. attended auch movement elsewhere. The Poring Trade. The season for. the Spring Trade, and the I time to' maVe'an effort to resuscitate the business of our city, have arrived. Tb. stocks of merchants in theconntry have been I tun ow, and their old account with mer chants at Louisville, Cincinnati and the East, have been settled up, and they are in a position to form new relations. Our merchant ought ta improve these favorable circumstances to extend the business of the city. There is a' river trade below ns that has never been sought as it is worth seeking. Agents of Louisville houses visit all the towns, and aided by the Louisville packets, carry a large amount of trade past us, that might be brought here, we are told, by proper exertions, and made to support our packet and give activity to our streets. The Green River country, from which we draw so much of our trade, might hei made to contribute more by cultivating a more intimate intercourse. A mail is very much needed up Green River, and now is the year for forming new mail routes it is certainly worth petitioning for. Is there no one sufficiently interested to move in the matter? Tbe country all around us needs canvassing to retain our old customers. It i filled with active drummers from Cincinnati and other large markets, who will seduce many old customers from us, if they are not circumvented. Our manufacturers, aa well as our merchants, should take more pains to make themselves and their works known through the country. It is only by individual exer tions that the general trade and prosperity of tho city can be incressed. A more liberal indulgence in the habit ef advertising and circulating notices of their business by handbills, cards and circulars, would be an investment that would pay gen erous returns. ArroixTMENTs bt thi Pbisidxxt. The Washington States of the 6th inst., contains a long lit of the recent appointment made by the President and confirmed by the Sen ate last week. Among the Indiana appoint ment we notice those of W. J. Ccllcm of this State, superintendent of Indiana 'affairs for the Northern Sopcrintendency, and Ctbcs K. Dbiw "to be agent for tbe Indian tribes east of the Kocky mountains and North of New Mexico and Texas." We think that there is a mistake in relation to the latter appointment. The Colonel expects to be located at Crow Wing, one hun tired and fifty miles' North of St. Taul, as agent of the Chippewas. If the States is correct, the office is one of more consequence and responsibility than was at first supposed. The English Mikistrt. The fall of Lord Palmereton, who has directed tho foreign policy of England for more than twenty year is an important event. Tho new ministry is highly conservative and anti Galican. The change will be unfavorable for. Louis Na poison, and will dissolve probably theeordia alliance between Enzland and France. The new cabinet will introduce, it ia to be hoped a more cordial, frank and sincere dipolomatIc Intercourse with this country, in regard to the commercial and political interests which both countries have in the South American States. ———<>—— BRIGHAM YOUNG in his recent Message to the Utah Legislature, plants himself emphatically and flat-footed, upon the dotrine [sic] of "Popular Sovereignty," and expresses a firm determination to stand by his platform, and resist every encroachment to the bitter end. Brigham insists most positively that every Territory has the undoubted right "to regulate its own institutions in its own way"— Utah not excepted—and that Mr. Buchanan ought not to resist the practical application of this good Democratic principle, so strongly advocated by himself. ———<>——— BT TLe St. Loui Ledger, an ultra Demtwratic and Catholic organ has been trans ferred to E. Hav ing lost their nat unl strength they cannot object to what is required) of them. Hence, the bowels become inflamed, and unless you find a speedy relief, a thousand other complaints are ever ready to drag yon through a miserable and wretched life. Such medicine must br given as willeleanse the stomach and bowels, and restore their nataaal strength.
