Ort TiiTtiff tb?tnnmln. nt.tn. the ' f i an extract from the Washington Union of yesterday, which manifests a sadden change in its tone, from an everbearing and prosenpÜTo, to a Tery conciliatory spirit. -There I a sign of backing out, and it is t dent the force of publio opinion is beginning to be lelt at Washington. The country will rejoice to hear that Gen. Shields and the Minnesota delegation hare refused to yield their honest conviction to secure the admission of their State. The veteran Captain Summons so long known on the line between Louisville and Cincinnati, riaa ronfl EDOQ his last trip. He died suddenly yesterday morning, at the TTahm in Cincinnati. Xiw Orleans asd Jackbos Kailoao.-A gap of only twenty-three miles remains to be completed on this road, between Jasckson and New Orleans, and it is confidently believed thai it will bo cloned up by the middle of the present month. This will give a continuous railroad connection from Yickaburg to New Orleans, which can be run in about fifteen hours, instead of two days, which. is the time occupied by the bests boats from Vicksbnrg to the Creaccnt City. The road from Jackson to Canton and thence North, and the read from Memphi to Panola and thence South, have approached .within less than eighty miles of each ether, and the gap is being rapidiy built up, and will bo completed the present year, when thore will be a continuous railroad from Memphis to New Orleans, when the journey will be made between the two cities in twenty-four hours instead of four days by steamers. These roads are to open a vast region of the finest cotton land in the world. ISfMexico is spparently In the la t throe. of dissolution. It will be dtScnlt ever again to unite her dismembered States nnder one general authority. Santa Anna, or some other usurper, may conquer the central and southern States, but the northern States, which have been virtually independent since the peace with the United States, will aet up for themselves, and maintain their independence by the aid they can command from this aide of the Bio Grande. The revolution is still in progress. The constitution that was adopted a year ago las friled es a practica scheme of government, from its too great adoption of the radical theories of the school of Europesn republi canism; and the monarchical and theocratical elements thst still remsin in its society have taten advantage of the reaction to carry into power a policy of the most absolut tenden-1 The constitntional President of ths J republic is driven to seek aid for his country beyond its borders, while the Vice President i, compelled to Ii th. repmeataüv of Mexican freedom together in disUnt pars yuwers tnas nave been installed under the nominal Presidency of Gen. The church and ths srmy ire restored to their privileges, and declared superior, in tbe eye of the law, to ths civil power and the great mass of the citizens. Tbe contest is, in truth, a contest between the feudal and ecclesiastical theories of the middle ages, and the political ideas of the present century. Tas xxTxasxox or PatjtKihts. From a statement of the patent rights cow before Congress for renewal that they involve interests to the enormous value of 1 43,000,000. The editor of the Scientific American says he does not think tho estimate an exaggerated one; for some of the patents specified in the list are the greatest privileges in tbe worldmore valuable than any gold mine in California because they have been worked and their capability fully demonstrated. There is no doubt whatever that an extension of the Colt & Goodyear patents for seven years longer would yield a not revenue of twenty-five millions of dollars a tax which would bt wrung out of the ieeple'a pocket by special legislation. There is danger that the indusemcnts whi:h may be held ont for the ex tension of theso exclusive rights may be too great for the virtne of Congress to resist. Thx Coxtextiom or trxTwixtt-Tbibo. The Louisville Democrat, as sound and able a Democratic paper as is published South or North of the Ohio, speaka of the Convention at Indianapolis on the 23d, in the following terms: " The Democratic mass meeting st Indianapolis, on tho 23d, waa a very large one. We have seen several persons who were present, and they all give tbe same account of it. It was a Democratic meeting. The Lecoroptonites mar undertako to disparage the meeting; but the Democracy of the South as well as the North had just as well open their eyes to the facts, and not undertake to disguise them. This meeting expresses the sentiraentc of the Northern Democratic party. It is, moreover, true that those sentiments are right. They accord with the antecedents and creed of the party. Let it be borne in mind that these are the men who have always done justice to the South. She has not a Constitutional right that they will not maintain. The fliers and crew of the British ship Caatillian from Bombay for Liverpool, on the 12th of December last, off the Island of St. Helena saw a Leviathan, of which the following account is given ia the Log of the ship, by the Captain. Whila myself and officers were atandinar on the leesido of th poop looking towards tha ialand. we were startlad br the aicrht of a I bugs marine animal, which reared its bead . , .91 1 M I ont or tbe water witmn twenty yards or tne ship, when it suddenly disappeared for about half a minute, and then made its appearance in the same manner sgsin, showing us distinctly its neck and bead about 10 or II feet. Its bead was shaped like a long nun buoy, and 1 suppose the diameter to have been T or 3 feet in the largest part, with a kind of scroll, or tuft of loose skin, encircling it about two feet from the top. The monster was moving slowly towards the land. Tbe ship was going too fast to enablo us to reach tbe roast-bead in time to form a correct estimate of its extreme length; but from what we saw from the deck, we conclude that it must have been over 200 feet long. The boat-swain and several of tbe crew, who observed it from the top-gall ant-forecastle, stated that it was more than double tue lengtn or tne snip, in which case it roust have been 500 feet. It was of a dark color about the head, and was covered with sevaral white spots. Having a press of can rasa on tbe ship at the time, I was nnsblo to round to without risk, and therefore was precluded from getting snothcr right of this leviathan of tbe deep. The banker took ths note from his portfolio, and laid it upon a desk, while reckoning tho interest. The payer took it put it in his mouth, chewed it, and swallowed it; and when the banker looked up, the note was gone, and t,he doctor began to deny it had ever had any existence and said that he owed no auch debt, Tho astonished banker had him arrested, and in- ; sis ted that an emetic should be administered to make him throw It up; but as the law had provided no such process for the recovery of property, the doctor was put to prison, and left to digest ths costly mouthful. Why win you neglee that diseate which la taking such deep root, and which gives you warning by that hacking cough, that you are fast ripening for eternity? Why encourage that pain in the side, the raising of blood, those night sweats, or that difficult breathing, which silently whisper In your ear that something must be done to save you from th grave of the consumptive? Why act so carelessly by permitting that disease to destroy your health, and hasten you to: he ttrb from whence no tra v eler ever yet returned ? SILENCE THAT DREADFUL COUGH! Or death must carry you to your silent grave. Why delay while there is yet hope! Consumption is causes by impure humors of the blood being deposited In tbe cells or the lungs. Hence, the Inngs are like a spring of water, when rolled np by the dirt or mod, if clear water constantly flows through the springs, impurities or mud will be conveyed away by the pure water. Just so with the blood when kept in a clean or pore state; as it constantly flows through the lung, it carries away all corrupt matter, and perfect health will be the result. From two t three pills taken every night or every other night, or enough to keep the bowels regular, will In a reasonable time cure eonsumption. The reason these pills are used more than all others, is because they are made of a purifying vegetables, and cleanse the body from all corrupt matter, and drive out disease of every description quicker and in a milder way than any other Pills, f ebj-d wlm .
