TUESDAY, FEB. 53 Domestic Help. J t m f ine lo wo wins communication Irom a friend contains some most excellent and suggestive hints upon one great source of domestic trouble. Our ideas of the re lations of master and servant "are fated" to undergo an entire change in this coun try, else every one must turn in to do servant's work, and that essential division of labor in our domestic economy will be destroyed. There is room' for tbe exercise ofour religious sentiment and of our political and moral pbylosophy in the consideration of the subject. Political Theory and- Social Practice. ha. v. uwrti. The new world's noble theory of life, which is more in unison with the gospel than all other theorie? pertaining to hnman government, is yet imperfect enough to admit of difficulties and inconsistencies, arUing irom the practical influences and workings of the system iUelf. Oar government, in a political sense, is a "free and equal'' one in all its bearings and teachings. It dispenses its ad vantages and blessings alike upon the rich and the poor, and every citizen of the "com monwealth of kings" is endowed not only ' with the right to pursue the path of his own choosing, bat by the geniuj of oar institu tions he is mad ono of the hereditary states men of the nation; the fathers ot the repub lic left it for the supreme Governor to bestow on whom he would the seals of Lis nobility, and as sce'i step to out from among the masses it is our distinction that we give them recognition and authority; oar triumph, that hcy lead us Ihrcughjusitce to greatness and glory. Very few of theso fathers of oars were inheritors of distinction; very few of the names at present forming the compressed lustics with which the column of American greatness, rising in stately grandeur, is bcltod but passed their earlier years at what, in other countries, would bo almost impassable distances from tho eminences they now occupy. Our stars have most certainly arisen from the earth; and our system harmonizes with that law of the atmosphere, which rarely sus tains in its loftier regions any object that docs not derive its forco and capacity and buoyancy from an original contact and sympathy with its lower and primitive ele xnenta. Yet this wondarful country of ours is not entirely a vat Democracy. Notwith standing all, our Americanism docs not pro .vent us from perceiving and confessing that oar grand system of liberalized ideas has in it here and there a clog. The burning de sire to rush to riches and position in this country is so great as to interfere to a degree of inconvenience in tho economy ot practical life. , This, with the unbending spirit of inJ J vi f- - r I ucpenaence wawa enaraeverisu Ol our citizens, irom youw r.p w maiuro mannooa, threatens consequences well worth consider ing. "Without following this part of our subject into its most serious recesses, it is enough to assert, that a growing prejudice exists in this country, against honest, patient labor a distaste towards succeeding, in a worldly point of view, by plodding industry. The good must be reached at one rapid stride. Then trie sentiment arising in the nature and spirit cf our institutions that it requires, more or less, a sacrifice of native independence to h; re our labor to others, and must be accompanied with a taint of degra dation coes far towards creating a permancnt injury to society. This difficulty extends throughout tho various grsdes of employrncnt. There are two certain erades of la- I bor which aro Indispensably necessary to tho welfare and comfort of communities, which it is almost absolutely impossible to get Americans to think of filling-for the reason, that tneso employments Dear to an un- i just decree tha marks of servitude. So far, thesa Twsitions are filled bv a class of reopie trained to different ideas and sentiments, Household scrviee is a kind of work that is of equal importance to any other requiring the same erade of ability, and yet the ioefficiency and worthlessness of servants is a prevailing complsint among all who employ them. Those who get their bread by any species of domestic service in this country aro so scl dorn Americans that we can hardly consider W th hadea of aerviinda wonld alt noon - .u. a s. v .V , inv; uallc jviucuwaii, vi uu , i.u.j iui,u, iu time, affect his character. The very name of lervant is a yoke too heavy for Lis pride. Jonathan may be poverty personified, yet be would sooner forego his heg and hominy and . . , v r mc starvation man uo -an üu' etander behind other men's chairs." Ho can't be a servant. His ideas may be limited by 1a?1r of learning, vet they are too enlarged to submit to any such degradation. He is willinz to perform a thousand menial offices under any other name; call him your fiicnd, and he will act as rour slave. Call him your scrvant, or even givo him reason to believe you regard him as such, and he feels his blood in a moment, and will ahow you that ho is his own master. He has not tho least objection to the things to bo done, but only to the position ho must occupy in doing them: so that while no money could hire him to stand idle in your hall in a menial capacity, he wili dig, plow, maul rails, or risk his life on your roof with no thought that he lowers himself by performing labor for your benefit. Work b his glory, servitude hi detestation; there is not the least danger that ho will ever, even lor the sake of the " almighty dollar," become a servant; though ho may so far for get himself aa to keep one. His transgression of the democratic principle will never take that form. In view of this national feeling against domestic servitude, some people ara a good deal concerned aa to what they shall do for servants, after the overflow of nations still abject to feudal ideas, shall have ceased, and those who are now hewers of wood and drawers of water in tolerable contentment, ahall have become thoroughly Americanized . 1 a. tit. a m a 1 1 rn M riA.uaU1 in leeuug, uu r m . a m a. Last week they had a firm fro zen ground with six inches of snow and good sleighing, while here the mud waa not stiff ened by the frost, nor the shallowed pool skimmed over by ice, nor had a flake of snow fallen upon our heads for two months On Saturday, however, winter came down the Railroad, and on Sunday gave ns a fleece of now six inches deep; bat the sun yesterday began to exert his power npon it, an i by tonight, it will have gone, leaving ns in the mud.
