A lar;o amount was exported in flat-boats, and by transient and irregular traders. It would not probably bo an over estimate to put the total Exports of the city from $7,500,000 to $3,000,000. Tha whole nucibcr of brick brildingi erected within tha corporate limits, many of which were large and expensive structares, was sixtyour. The number of frame buildings erected was twenty-five, making the whole number within the city, limits eigütt-nixe. Besides these a large number of dwellings were built in the suburbs: an extensive distillery, just below tne city, has Leen erected by a Cincinnati Compa
ny, at a cost of $15,000 or $30,000 a smaller one in the same vicinity by one
of our own citizens. A4 boat yard has been pat in operation, and an extensive saw mill for sawing boat plank has been
erected in connection with it. The total
number of buildings erected during the
year, directly connected with the busl
ness of the city, has not been less than
one hundred; a great portion- of Ihm are
of the most substantial character, and
many are elegant and expensive buildings. We have twenty-one churches of the different denominations of Christians, all of which, except three, are undtr the charge of Pastors. Our iystera of evaded free schools is the best in- the State, and under our present charter is not dependent upon the lawa of tbo Legislature or the decisions of the Supreme Court for ita countenance. As these valuable Institutions are closed in other cities and
towns in the State, the privilege of
maintaining ours will become more high ly estimated, and will add more than
ever to the attractions of the city as n place of residence, and thereby enhance
the value of its property.
Our Fire Department is a large and
efficient one tor the population of the city,
and includes 615 active firemen, and
seven good and efficient engines
There is no city in the State with which we have the data to compare our
business, except New Albany, whose statistics for 1857 were recently pub
lished. That citv claims a population of
18.000. which is 50 per cent, moro than
Evans villa contains. No statement is
made in her published reports of the
amount öf exports from New Albany. "We presume they do not exceed one
third, if they do one quarter of the
amount of the shipments from Evans ville.
The amount of Groceries sold in 2ew Alba
in 1S57, was,... ....... f 960,000
In Evansville 2,034,623
Dry Goods sold in New Albany... 670,000
do do in Evansville 545,271
Leaving out the estimated amount of the retail' trade of New Albany a branch
not included in our estimates and alsa
the sales of produce which are excluded
from our tables, and the- aggregate amount of the trado of New Albany in
merchandise, is $2,490,000: and mer
chandise sold in Evansville is 600.
In manufactures she is but a little in
ad ranee of us. With a population of
50 per cent larger, her commercial busi
ness is scarcely one half that of our city.
These figures show that Evansville is the
chief commercial city of 'Indiana. A Important Appointment.
UHAS. Uenbt, L.s( ho3 been nonu

equally zealous Democrats and derated supporters of the Administration. Both
were delegates- to-the 8th of January
Convention and voted" the platform.
rxMiUon on tbo LecomKon dodjre. It
Eretty plain irom present indications inauuo democracy of thisstate intend not to be misunderstood or misrepresented on this point. From tha extraordinary eflorts which are boinjr made in certain quarters to miaconstruo the meaning of Mr. Wallace's rcsolntion, adopted, by the lato Democratic State Convention, we apprehend the example of the Vi;ro Democrat will bo pretty generally followed thronzhont tho State so that there will bo no wiisandcrstandinsnow or hereafter
on the position cf the Indlaua Democracy on the Leoornpton movement. Even Senator
Fitch, we opine, will very eoon comprehend
tho wnoio matter.
The different readings which have attended the construction of the last resolution adopted by tho late Convention has tended mitenally
to i no cuii lor a uemoeraue jisfs jiceunr 10 be holden at Indianapolis, on the 22d dav of
t ebruary next.
Tho conrse or a few prrentonal politicians and offico-bolders on the Lecompton dodge has been well calculated to produce such a
result, yet it may not anit them.
Tbo ea;i for the mass meeting regrets, not what was done, particularly, but what was not done. It proposes to extend tho platform, and to go before tho peophi with a full and fair expression of opinions upon all measures of government, aa tbo Democratic party are wont to do. It docs not propose a new bUte
ticket or disorganisation, it calls for a reflection of the unanimity of the Democracy of the State in favor of an Independent Treasury, and against 'be rc-ccion of the aalo of tho Wabash and. Erie Canal. The fropoition to increase our State indebtedness rem about 7fi00fi00 to $17,000,000 is one which address ltsc'f to tho pocket of every tax-pajer. There can be no doubt of the sentiment' and opinions of tho great masses of the partv on these subjects, and upon the
impropriety of permitting the Republican
to occupy oar own tenable ground, ibe Stato Convention should have echoed thes
opinions at the Capitol. It must now be done or tho overwhelming defeat of our State
ticket is inentablc. The call devotes r-ome well-timed remarks to tho " last resolution," spoken of by our correspondent in another column. - 1
The call is conceived in the rieht spirit. If
it stops st what it proprwes, it is well, it is
eminently necessary. We will publ'ah it
next week, when an opportunity will be pi ven to all Democrats who desire to subscribe to it.
It is siened by Gen. Drake, Col. Coolcerly;
Col. Dnmont, An tin M. Pnett, Judge Lowry.
and other prominent Democrats. Warrick
Democrat.
IST Another Instance of tho promptitude
with which the old established JEtna Insu
rance Company pay losses covered by their policies had just occurred. On the 19th of the present month tho largo brick flouring mill at Vinccnncs, belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Mar.waricg was destroyed by fire, but had been insured in the offico of tho Jtna Company for $3,835. Instead of availing themselves of the ixty days stipulated in their policy, the company's aent paid cp the amount for which the property was insured, in ihre iay after the occurrence of the fire.

237" A man named Carpenter, wbila hunting for lend, a short time since, in the vicinity of Blue Mound, Wiiiconsin, opened a remarkable cavern at a depth of some scven-
wagons to ashes, made them prisoners, robbed
them of everything they had, tore the cloth-
ing off their backs, and then tied them to a
tree, where they were kept three days and
nights without food. On the third day the
fiends told their captives that in five days
they should be put to death, and gave them
their choice either to be burnt or be chopped into pieces. But their intended victims fortunately made their escape, and after travel

----->By a recent improvement, Hughe's
Printing Telegraph is now capable of performing the extraordinary feat of sending
and recording at the same time, from opposite endsot the wire, two dutinct dispatches
in alphabetical characters. In many cases th answer to a dispatch begins to bo received before tho dispatch itself has been wholly transmitted, although but one wire is employed to perform the double duty. By this
process but one operator is required to re
ceive and deliver despatches. The type ia arranged on the periphery cf a wheel, from
which the i repression is taken in ink, without che:king ita motion. This invention will
be the means of diminishing the charges for
telegraphic communications.
M. Tiioxas Alli&oni, late . President of
the Bank of Pennsylvania, has published a
longMettcr in - the Philadelphia papers defending himself from the- charges .brought
against him, denying that he was ever engaged in speculations during the term of his bank presidency stating that he went abroad solely on account of the state of his health. The fact that he was the largest stockholder in the bank is almost sufficient to lead one to believe that he, acted in good faith and for the best interests of the institution.
