tSJTWe call attention to the advertisement of the Indiana A shbnry Female College, in another column. This Institution is one of the oldest and most popular in the West. The President, who is well known as a successful educator, is assisted by an able corps of teachers, and no effort is spared to wnder the situation of the pupils profitable and pleasant. The coarse of study embraces all the more solid branches of learning, together with those finer accomplishments so essential to a thorough female education. The Institution is beautifully situated, and its va rioas apartments are furnished not only with every thing necessary to comfort, but even with a degree of elegance seldom to be found in similar establishments. "We commend it to those having daughters to educate. Such weather as we have enjoyed daring the past few days baa not been witnessed for several years in this portion of the conn- .' fj at the aame scaaon of the year. Sunny, v'Vwarm, and cheerful, it resembles more the month ol May than that of January. All whose time will permit are oat of door enjoying it, and those whose business confine them to the office, the store, or the workshop regret the circumstances that prevent their participation in the general enjoymentYesterday the streets presented a lively ap
pearance. The fair sex were out In full force, and agreeably occupied in paying their respects to the knights of the yardstick and shears. .13 asiness, generally, appeared to be brisk, and the cheerful faces of storekeepers wss a sufficient indication that they were not
nn profitably employed. Tax Too. We are Informed by the offi ccrs of the Evansville Benevolent Associa
tion that the number of destitute persons ap plying to them for relief, this winter, is far less than usual. In a season of general dis tress snd lack of employment elsewhere, thoso who are disposed to labor find employ ment here, and there seems to be no difficul ty in making life comfortable. Such a char acter as a beggar, has not been seen in the streets this season. The mild weather has lessened tho expenses of the poor, and the successive rises in the river hare brought large and frequent supplies of drift wood, which the benevolent waves hare left upon the shores of the river for the timely supplies cf the poor, who, it is estimated, have thus been helped to 75 or 100 cords of fuel. The pork houses have afforded an abundance of cheap meat almost without price, and bread has been so low, that tho price of a day's labor would supply a family for a fortnight. There has therefore been no excuse for the : most thriftless and dissolute to ask for help. tub lixxwilleu ferry bridge. An intelligent correspondent sends ns the following description of tho new bridge over Pigeon Creek at Linxwiller Ferry. We learn from other sources that it is a structure reflecting credit on the engineers, contractors, and the county. The Linxwiller Ferry Bridge is a fine structure, 1 20 feet span , resting on ceat and substantial cut-stone abutments, 23 feet In height, having circular wing-walls, neatly furnished with tool'd coping parapets c. The plan of the superstructure is after the style known as fhe "Burr," having double chords and plates, single posts, and truss bracing. The arches rest in iron shoes let into the skenbacks or the abutments, and are also well secured by wrought iron bolts at the points where they intersect the posts. The superstructure is extended 10 feet on each aide over the abutments, so as to keep the ends of the chords as dry as practicable, and the back ot the abutments is carried up to the height of the floor Umber so as to prevent any earth from resting against them thereby rendering them more durable. The approaches to this bridge are 20 feet wide; that on the North side has an Inclination of 1 inch in 20; and the one on the South side is nearly level. This fine bridge is built jnst immediately above the site of the old one, and is neatly weatherboarded and painted. The contractors were Messrs. Csathers & Applegate who have earned credit for themselves and have done aervice to the county. The Engineer and Superintendent was Mr. J. D. Saunders our present City Engineer, who has secured us by his judicious plsns severai of the best bridges in this part of the Bute. ILa coat of the whole Including the cost of retting off tho dam at tho Piecon Milla Is a ISlttle under $3,000. täTThe Pittsburgh Gaxctt at Jfoaday isjs: We took a walk on Friday moral? down the Levee from the Monon&rahelfc oxides to the foot of Ferry atreet, a distaacev of more thsn three very large- squares, and never placed our toot upon the ground.
