CSfansbille gailg journal, EVAXSVILLE, IND. "WEDNESDAY JAN. 20 KT Our Telegraph Reports contain the conclusion of Mr. Haie' speech on the Kansas Question and other interesting proceedings in Congress. THE EXPORT TRADE OP OCR CITY. We hare had the pritilege of examining the detailed statements of the shipments of produce and merchandise from this place daring the last year, made up
with great care and accuracj bjrMr. Patrick Burke for the Board of TradeLike Mr. Burke's returns of the city census, he has not put down a figure without evidence that it belonged to the enumeration. He has taken the ship ping book3 and bills , of lading of the principal houses, and from these authentic sources he has picked up the articles and laboriously collated ar.d arranged them. Ho has taken nothing from general statements and estimates, but gone to the record of everv shipment. His statements will be under rather than ex ceed the truth;' for many small transactions by small aai casual dealers, will hare escaped his investigations. The year 1856 was a short crop year, especially in the region of country of which our city is the commercial centre. The amount of the crop shipped was far below the average. The tables collected for the use of the Board of Trade, embrace only the business Irom July 1856 to July 1837, which of course includes only the transactions connected with the crop of 1836. The exhibit, under these circumstances, will surprise our own citizens, by its unexpectedly large footings. The tablo before us contains only a state ment of the shipments of the largo "Wholesale Houses and Commission Merchants, and for want of authentic data omits those made by casual shippeis and smaller dealers. We select from the statement some of the leading articles: hoo products. Barrel of pork 49,623 Ilhds of bacon 10,053 Pieces of bacon and pork in bulk 53,933 ' Kegs ot lard 53,896 CKBZALS. Uarrels of flour 3,223 Sacks of corn 101,638 This item embraces only tho quantity taken Irom tho city wharf. There was was a large amount taken from the farms on tho river, in this vicinity that was actually shipped b your citizens. Sacks of oats 19,270 Backs of wheat 25,699 TOBACCO. Ilhds of leaf tobacco 9,759 Boxes of manufactured tobacco.. 1,863 GBOCIBIIS AND XZBCHAND1ZI. The tablo contains only the shipments made by steamboats, railroad and canal, and makes no account of tho largo amount sold to the country trado and taken from the city in wagons, which forms, we presume, onethird of our trade, in tno Tarious unes or dusiness : Sacks of coffee 9,229 Barrels of molasses 4,909 Barrels of sugar 6,297 Barrels of salt 53,814 Barrels of whisky 6,897 Boxes of cheese 8,033 Boxes of candles 1,716 Boxes of candy 1,545 Barrels of crackers 8,124 XERCnAXDIZE. Boxes of boots and shoes "'P Boxes of dry goods 2,876 Boxes of other merchandize 11,994 Miscellaneous boxes 5,849 Boxen of hardware 1,611 Kegs of nails JJJ Boxes glass and glassware 4 ,6 4 Tons of iron 19 MISCELLANEOUS. Tlides andskina 10,174 Barrels of lime 10,871 Pieces of castings It bis of eggs Number of stoves Kegs of powder 2,051 4,990 5,63$ 1,310 1,097 334 230 isoxes or drugs Crates of queenswaro Tons of machinery.., There aro infinito varieties of smaller items which we omit. Those given aro all embraced in the business operations of tho following thirty-four firms : Bement & Viele, E. S. Babeock, P. G. O Keily & Co. Chas. Uabcock, Preston Uro, McRca & Wells Babeock & Sonntag, Howard & Brown, Hornbrook & Co. P. Gleesen, Wheeler and Riggs, Cook fc Son, I. & D. Ileimann, Shanklin & Kcilly, F. Krohn, J. II. Morgan & Bro. I. A. Crane, Jewell & Co. J. II. Hushes, Cook & Kico. Foster fc Co. Sam'l Orr, Orr & Dalzcll, Tenner & Sorenson, Keen & Treston, Gilbert Co. Barnes & Bnrtis, J. S. Mitchell, Kratz & Ilcilman, Brinkmeyer & Co. Anspacher & Co. Decker fc Kramer, Geo. Venneman, J. II. Maghoo & Co. Tue shipments of other houses would probably add 25 to 50 per cent, to the aggregate of many of the articles. The returns for 1855 and 1856, embraced two Tery active seasons, while that now pre sented contains the business of one shipping season only, for tho river in the autumn of 1856 was unnarigable from low water, and in tho winter was frozen up. With this disadvantage in the com parison of the two years the latter be ing short crop year the increase is surprising. 1856. 1S57. 72,493 9,759 210,000 53,814 9,227 6.897 62,228 53,89 Pork redncod to bbls....4l,S09 Ilhds. tobacco 5,735 Sack corn, embracing) all shipments fromV 186,130 this vicinity, J Eblsofaalt 41183 Sacks of coffee 4,222 Bbls of whisky 2,591 Bblsof flour 60,561 Kegs of lard 73,547 Sacks of wheat 55,903 25,699 The decline in the quantity of lard shipped is unaccounted for. The falling ofTin the shipments of wheat is attribu ted to the poor crop of 1856. Tho Board of Trade will render a valuable and im portant service to the city by the annual collection and publication of these statistics, and if it shall confer no other benefit, its organization should U mainUin -
ed. These tables of exports show that
Evansville is now ths largest shipping point to the South on the Ohio river. It sends more Western produce to New Orleans than any other city in the West, except St Louis. We hope its manufactures will soon rival its commerce. "COXFIDEXCE CCRRKVCY." The citizens of Owen, Morgan, Monroe and Green counties in this State, hare been shamefully swindled by the makers and tterers of worthless shinplasters. We learn from a correspondent, that a Mr. Alexander, of Gosport, some months ago established the Citizen's Bank of Gosport, a concern sine tioncd by no law, and with no responsibility but his individual name. By a system of puffing and adroit management, he succeeded in giving currency to its bills. He had sue ceeded in pursuading tho community to put faith in his Imocs about the beginning of tho pork season. About tho time the Jarmers wero ready to bring their hogs into market, he becamo a speculator, and in the course of two or three weeks got possession of nearly all tho pork in Owen and four of the adjoin ing counties, for which he paid in the bills of the Citizen's Bank of Gosport. After he had put afloat in the community as report sayssome $600,000 or $700,000 of its bills, and got no his clutches a largo portion of the surplus crops of the farmers of the region, he suspended, closed the doors of the bank, and now leaves tho bill-holders to reflect at leisure upon the best mode if any there bo to recover their property or get their money. It has proved to bo one of tho coolest swindles of tho season. We see some threats in tho papers of the adjoining counties, of resorting to Judge Lynches codo to extort payment; but the proceeds of the property are probably safely deposited at tho East, beyond tho reach of bis creditors. "We are also told that A. Downing & Co. of Richland Furnace, near Bloom field, have been enlarging tho local currency of the same region by a free issue of shinplasters tha have becomo inconvertible, and now stick to the hands of the deluded holders. It is reported that there are from $100,000 to $200,000 of these issues in the hands of tho people in Greene and tho neighboring counties. largo number of farmers have been swindled out of their year's labor by these suoccssfu operators in bogns currency. Tna English axd Frisch Slxxz Trade A letter from Loango, on the coast of Africa, says tho French and English are both practically engaged in tho slave trade, under the name of apprcnticcslup, while they are hypocritically condemning it before tho world, as worse than piracy. The letter says that a Bordeaux ship named the " Clara,' was laying at Loango, receiving a cargo o slaves, and "a French war-stcamer lay alongside to protect her from the Englis cruisers, who would have seized her, but that sho had a French officer on board, with or ders to the French Commodore to protect her. The English are also using negroes as slaves atSierre Leone. Tho French and English Governments are participating in a trade which they affect to deem so hideous. A barracoon has boon built by the French at Loanno, to bo nsod for the safe-keeping of tho slaves until they are ready for shipment. There is no secret in this business, and no disguise is attempted." Faox Kansas. Accounts to the 15th Inst have been received, and doubts still remain in regard to tho election of the members of the Legislature under tho Lccompton Constitution. Gross frauds are charged upon tho judges who conducted it. Gen Calhoan, to whom as President of the Convention tho returns arc all made, Is now engaged in counting them at Lccompton. The whole matter rests with him; lo can report such returns as he pleases; and from Li antece dents, fruuds aro apprehended. The FreoStato men have declared that if he persists in his attempts to accomplish his pro-slavery designs by frauds, that the Territory will bo a very unsafe placo for him. Tho report that he was on his way to Washington appears to havo been premature. The majority against the Lccompton Con stitution is stated to be, by tho last accounts, between 10,000 and 12,000. A Significant Movement. A call U mado by a largo number cf Democrats in Vigo County for a Mass Meeting of the Dcmoc racy, to bo holden at Tcrro Haute on Satur day, January SOth. Tho signers of tho call say, that holding tho doctrine of Fopular Sovereignty as understood by tho people in the campaign of ISo'l, and as interpreted by Judgo Douglas, in his late speech in tho United States Senate, and believing that true Democratic policy and principle require the submission ol tho Constitution of all Terri tories, about to apply for admission into the Union, to a lair and direct vote of tho pooplo thereof for their adoption or rejection, now and hereafter, deem it right and prrtcr that a Mass Convention of the Democracy of this Connty, holding similar views, should bo hold to express their sentiments on tho great question of popular rights, and to-tako such other action as may bo deemed necessary." 2TDr. Anson Jones, cx-Prcsidcnt of Texas, who committed suicido on tho 8th instant, was a native of Philadelphia, and a graduate of tho University of Pennsylvania. He emigrated to Texas when it was a Mcxi can State, and took an active part in tho revolution which resulted in its independence, having had the command of a company at the battle of ban Jacinto. He subsequent ly served in the Congress of Texas, and sue cessiveiy as Minister of that Republic at Washington, President of the State Senate, when ho became ex-ofücio Vice President of the Republic, and finally its President, which ho hell when Texas was annexed to the Union. He was lately a candidate for tho U. S. Senate, in place of Gen. Rusk, who also committed suicide, but he gave way to Gen. J. Pinkney Henderson, who was elected. 137" On Saturday afternoon last, an Englishman named Batts, was brought before the Probate Court in Cincinnati for examination as a lunatic. He imaginea he ia invested with a commission from tho crown of England to exercise- authority over the officers of the United States Government. When he entered the court room he took a seat on the Judge's Bench, overhauled tho papers, and called up defendants for trial or sentence. II was sent to the Lunatic Asylum. KT Dr. Chta. nst., referring to Mr. Wallace's resolution adopted by the 8th of January Convention at Indianapolis, says: o other resolutions than those embraced in the platform, were adopted by the Convention." That at a very ate hour they succeeded in passing the res olution of Mr. Wallace, "but by a simulated vote." The resolutions published by the Union are those only reported by Mr. Voorbecs from the Committee on resolutions. Tho New Albany Ledger shows tho folly of the Union in attempting to igncre that resolu tion, and states tho plain facts of the case as follows: The voto by which Mr. Voorhccs's rcsolu tions were adopted was, ayes 874, noes 186 total number of votes cast 560. - Tito vote by which Mr. Wallace's resolution wa adoptea was, ayes 3.3, noes 114 total vote 432 showing only 63 absent or not voting (most or them the latter.) it will tbu be seen that in a smaller aggregate vote Mr, Wallace's resolution received more vote than Mr. Voorhecs's. Subsequently this res olution with the others wus unanimously aaopieu. a ncse are tue facts in tno case. 1 OTP ..A... tST The election of Senator Powell to the U. S. Senate from Kentucky over Lynn Boy is represented in the Frcnkfort papers as a triumph of loung America over old fogyism; Mr. Powell was understood tobe the peculiar friend of Vice President Breckcnridgc, while Boyd is the adherent of Bnchan an. The friends of Mr. Brcckenridze havo resented the manner in which their gallant young champion has been slighted. They have become chagrined at the idea that he of whom they expected so much cannot even obtain an insignificant clerkship for a personal or political friend, and they resolved in Urn that no partisan of Mr. Buchanan, as Boyd was known to be, should rcccivo an honorable position at their hands. What is to be Slavs Traffic. It is said that a conference will shortly be held in Lon don between tho representatives ol France and England, to settle what is, and what is not, slave-traffic. The new plan of tho French Government for engaging negroes on the West Coast of Africa as free laborer." for its West Irdia Colonies, might obviously lead to a connict between tho English cruis ers and tho French shir. The proposal to como to a distinct understanding emanates from France, tho Government of which is still of opinion that the engagement of free laborers is a better mode of stonninz tho traffic in slaves than any preventive mcas nrcs. New Yone in 1504, and 1353. Tiic New York Post says, it is difficult to rculize tho fact that within the present century, and the memory of a groat many of our pcoplo now living, the city of New York gave less than 3,003 votes in a severely contested ejection et such is tho fact. At tho election of Governor of this State, in 1304, the whole number of votes cast in tho city of New York was 2,730 of which Aaron Burr had 1.415, and Morgan Lewis 1,815. , To show tho contrast between now and then, wo give the official statement of tho votes cast at the recent election of Mayor in this city. Whole number, 84,199; Daniel F. Tiemann, 42,ä03; Fernando Wood, 40,833; scattering, 103. Differenco between tho votes of ISO! and 1S58, 81,469. Volunteers ron Utah. Companies are organizing in Missouri for tho purpose of offering their services to tho Government, for an expedition to Utah in the spring. A large force can be collected in Missouri for such a service at a short notice. The Government are urging the officers of the regular army to great activity in tho recruiting service, in order to fill up th prtunt reqinunt to a full complement, and orders havo also been issued for the concentration of troops at Jefferson Barracks, to be ready to inov - to Utah as soon as the Bering oicns. J57 Mr. Fowler, tho postmaster of New York, has awarded tho contract for tho advertising of uncalled for letters for the present year to the Sun, it having certified to a total circulation of 51,000, and a circulation of 87,000 within tho post office limits (below Fifty-fourth street), which latter figure exceeds that established by any of its competitors. ßyTho Fort Wayne Times states that Judge Worden is about to resign Lis office as incumbent on the Circuit Bench, and be appointed to the Supremo Bench ; and that Reuben J. Dawson of Sptnccrvillo, will fill tho placo vacated by Judgo Worden. SAVINGS DA Mi U$T. Rate at which the following Bank Note are bonglit, or recti red on drpoit at the Barings Bonk, Kvuis Tille.
