...JAK. 19 TUB COMMERCIAL FUTURE. From all sources we hate assurances from
of great improvements in business an r I : i :
increase Ol com u rapiu rcatuiatiuu of credit It is predicted that the recoT-
ery from the panic will be more rapid
that
than the, decline; that the strength gathered during the suspension will, when business is resumed, gire it more
ing
actlrity and energy than it ever possessed before. When trade takes a new
start it will eclipse all its former achieve
ments, in the magnitude and number of
its enterprises. The wealth it has here
tofore created has been assayed in the crucibles of the panic, and its real worth tested. The fictitious creations of prop
erty hare passed away, and the rea
and solid that remains bears a stamp that will make it current as a real ralue wherever it exists. We shall have, therefore, a solid foundation in the fixed property of the country to start upon. Sad experience has taught us the value of money its power has been felt and it will be used more prudently and effi cientlj; the lessons we have learnt will be worth in the future guidance of business more than they cost to acquire them. Luxury and extravagance have been arrested, and the inordinate con sumption of the precious metals in the I arts and personal ornamenU has been j checked and a larger portion oi them has been accumulated for the use of currency; and commerce in its new career will have a broader and more abundant metallic currency the largest amouut of products it ever had for its operations; but it will for a season be crippled in its movements by the derangement of its con nections and loss of former facilities. If all other things were equal, our confidence in & rapid restoration of trade St- S.J. . m. 'Ä. ?ll 1- -1 I woum cc unoounaeaj-oui wm xaca. one important element of strength which it IO lost in the recent conTulsion and which will be of slow r.ftT-rT- and that 5 it rnm .m.unt J ' of esUblished prirate credit. The sum of this which has been sunk in the rorincalculable. Whateyer consideration we may gire to money and bank curren cy used in commerce, it is insignificant in comparison to the amount and importance of private commercial credit which is the chief agent that mores and sus tains the trade of the world. The commercial credits hat have been annihilated by the failure of old and' established houses is almost equal in amount to the circulating coin in the world. But credit has been everywhere shaken ; and those who have not fallen by the shock, and who hare met all their engagements hare not the power now to create this kind of medium, which they had before the panic. ThearefrataliabiliÜesinthflform of 00 0 s , m commercial paper and credits of the houses that haTe actually failed in this country and Europe since the 1st of September last, is stated at $1,000,000,fJSS mi a uw. A ne aepreciauon m nctilious property, and the Ios3 of credit among those
who hare withstood the storm has been tbat tbe Agent of the Nashville and IlentO an amount three times as creat as the 1 dereon K. K. bad sold In New York f 500,000
actual liabilities of those who have failed, and the annihilation ofcommercial credit may be estimated at $1,000,000,000, an amount more than all the bank and metal lic currency in circulation in the world. sssma a a a i nis vast sum cannot be restored in a season or a year. Although we have the elements of credit in abundance, it will requiro time to construct it in new forms and repair the damages suffered by the aldest and strongest houses, the pillars of the past commercial fabric from the earthquake that has shaken the struc iure to its centre. Our local and do uiestic trade will recover more rapidly than the general and foreign trade of the country; for credit will be re-established at nome oeiore it can do recovered at a distance. We look for a healthy and ac tive spring domestic business, on short credits, but we do not expect any im provement abroad that will materiaally increase the demand for and prices of our products. A TOBACCO WAREHOUSE-IMPORTANT PROPOSITION. A proposition for the erection of a to bacco warehouse has been laid before us bj Mr. P. G. The New Orleans packets, though de pendent upon the shippers of Evansville for their cargoes, and though, this sea son, we have forwarded from our levee, six barrels of pork and flour to one ship ped bj Louisville, yet when these boats publish their manifests in New Orleans, the name of Evansville is not mentioned; their cargoes are "all from Louisville." It is a matter of considerable importance to Evansville. It is unjust to give Louisville credit of forwarding all the freight landed at New Orleans by her packets when it is a notorious fact, that without the shipments of Evansville these boats would bo unable to pay their expenses. Several times, Louisville boats have returned from this point, re ceiving here every pound of their freight, anl yet because the boat was a Louitville tbo 0fficers have published the carA Rr.:nnf,,i - Tuiyiile.
