with sundry amendments. These amendrncnfs were voted down, as you are aware, by over three to one, the honest masses of the Convention having at last become thoroughly aroused to tbe vital importance of the resolution, and broken loose from the terrible grasp of the politicians and office-holders which had held them down throughout the day. Then came tho struggle on the original resolution. Mr. Chapman, of Jefferson, who acted as chairman of the committee on resolutions in the temporary absence of Mr. Voorhees, sternly opposed tho resolution on two principal grounds: 1st, That tho word iitalitnabU denied to the people tho right of delegating to their agents, txprett instruction to that f fed, the power to form a constitution and put it in operation without sub mitting it bock for adoption or rejection; and 2d, That the word now plainly referred to f.comjtonf and thtrefirt contained a direct censure of the President and his administra tiont Now what was tho result ot tho struggle? Why, gentlemen, wo agreed that the word inalUnahU might bo stricken out, whether becauso tho word itself did cot amount to much, or because the point made against it by Mr. Chapman was clear and
tenable, it is unnecessary to inquire, as being
totally immaterial to the issue. In regard to the other objections of Mr. Chapman, Mr.
llolman rose and boldly declared that the word KowfJ refer to Kansas and the Le
compton fraud, and that without it tne reso
lution was utterly worthless. After further debate the resolution was carried by a largo
majority, the Henry county delegation ad
dressing thechair, and declaring by way of
explanation that they voted fur the resolution with tho understanding that tho word
jv,w was not intended as a censure of the Ad ministration. Here i tho wnole matter fair
lv and fully stated, and I challenge contra
diction.
In regard to tho contemptible fraud by which tue very life and soul are strangled out of tho resolution in its publication, 1 am
unable to traco its origin or authorship, nor
am I disposed to try it. I am not at all snr
prised at its perpetration. It is a flno and
striking feature in Lccompton politics, and
would uo honor to the Machiavellian states
manshipof Lord President John Calhoun
himself. At all events it is in perfect char
actcr and keeping with the proceedings of a Convention, which, with many elements to redeem it from everlasting and damning in

tbe resolution was passed by thc Convention as I have quoted it, and as it is published
among the other resolutions by that sterling
democratic paper the bhelby olnntccr. That tho resolution of tho State Conven tion embracing that declaration, truly re

one year chesp at S3 and this splendid engraviLg,
richly worm 5; tons getting ror n toe vaine 01 5. We shall commence striking off tbe engravings im mediately, yet it can hardly be expected thai impressions of so larce a nlate can be taken as fast as they
will be called for by subscribers. Wt nsll , therefore,
furnish them in the order in which subscriptions are received. Those who desire to obtain their engravings early, and from the first impression, should send In their subscriptions without delay. The engraving can be sent on rollers, by mail, or in any other man ner, as subscribers shall order. 820,00(9 IX WORKS OF ART. REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD SUBSCRIBE FOR
EMERSON'S MAGAZINE For 1838. First Because its literary contents will, during the year, embrace contributions from over one hundred dirterent writers and thinkers, numbering among them the most distinguished of American authors. Second Because its editorial departments, ' Our Studio." "Our Window," and " Our Olio," will each be conducted bv an able editor, and it will surpass, in the variety and richness of its editorial contents, any
other magazine. Third Because it will contain, during the year, nearly six hundred original pictorial illustrations from designs by the first American artists. Fourth Because for the sum of $8, you will receive this splendid monthly, more richly worth that sum than any other magazine, and the superb engraving of " THE LAST SUPPER," worth SiFifth Because you will very likeiy draw one of the three thousand prises to be distributed on the 25th day of December, 15 perhaps one that is worth 1 ,000. Notwithstanding that these extraordinary inducements can hardly fail to accomplish the o -jeeU of the publishers without further effort, yet they hare determined to continue through the year
The Great Library Offer. To any person who will get up a club of twenty-four subscribers, either at one or more post Rice, we will present a splendid Library, consisting of over Forty Large Bound Volumes, embracing the most popnlar woras in the market The club may be formed at the cl ub price, 3 a year, without the eugraving, or at the

That we fully and heartily endorse the
