The session of the Council, often extend until midnight, and hitherto, the Councilmen have not received one tent for their labors, except when acting as a Board of Equalization. - COUNCIL. Street Commissioner Smith made a report of work done on the streets for the week ndinar January 2d, and $37 82 was allowed iur the same. ' It was ordered that a cash order for tl,092 25 be drawn upon the City Treasurer in favor of the Canal Bank, that being the amount paid by tho Bank for the Engine of the Union Fire Co. vi J. G. Veoneman wat allowed $1 40 fr rope for Neptune engine; John Hewson $11 82 for sundries; Well II. Walker 75 for oiio month1 salary; and E. S. Martin $16 65 for the same; James G. Jone was allowed $13i), balance due on his bill for services ; $30) wu advanced Charles Gottman on hi contract for bu Uing Oak street cultert. - , Market Master Elles report was reaJ, and the Mayor was instructed to notify Mr. Elle to pay owr all inouey in hi hand to the City Treasurer. Weigh .Master' Fix, reported 165 load of hay weighed during the month of December. Recorder Mills presented his monthly report. Twenty-nine new cases were trid bofore him during the month of December. No action was taken upon the report, and it was ordc.ed to be placed with other report formerly made by Mr. Mills. . J. 8. HOPKINS, Chairman The report was unanimously received and concurred iu, and the Committee on Ordinance instructed to have an ordinance drafted in accordance therewith. It was ordered by the Council, that hereafter all fine due the city, not paid or replevied, should be. "worked out' by the prisoners, and tho Mayor was instructed to procure fix sets of chains for use ot City Chain Gang. Tho contract for filling up blocks 20 and 21 was given to Ignatus Schwanty. at 19 cents per ubic yard. The subject of filling in property in Stockwell Enlargement, near Ingle street, was re ferred to a special committee, consisting of the Mayor and Mr. Hopkins. The Marshal was instructed to wait upon the Gas Company and request them to keep the city lamp in better condition. The subject of controversy between the city and citizens and the Gas Company, was, upon motion of Mr. Scantliu, referred to the Mayor, with discretionary power to act thereon.
