THE CUSTOM HOUSE ATXEW ORLEANS.

This politcal and extravagant structure was commenced in 184f), and prob

ally trill not be completed before 1865 It is-said to 1 the largest building: in

the world under roof, covering an area of about two acres. The cost of the iron ia it is SS0O.O0O, of the marble $575,-

rmn nd th granite 274.000. 'Vhen or.mnlotorl will nrftl.-lU T COSt S5.000.0UO. v t " D ' mr ' The entablatures which surround the " . . . I Ili collector's room will cost fiw.uuu. - , flt.j,iflmBiftf 1 he room has flaBn,f marble, each forty-one feet high. Ihe capital ofeach column cost 6.500, The columns will cost $150,000. There are "10 insrble Step- in and about the buildcostin- $32.701. The lumber used up" to the 1st of July cost $100,000. Hut notwithstandins this enormons ex penditure of money and time the new Cu-itora House has proved a wretched failure, and the Government has been outrageously cheated. The foundations though laid upon broad platforms of cypress timber, in excavations twenty feet deep and thirty fee, in width are insuf ßeient in the unstable soil to support the walls. On one side they have already settled twelve inches, and the giound arches in the centre of the building have been so much damaged that they have to I replaced with tron girdles. The New Orleans Dee says Mwe will not be surprised if, in the course of fifty years the floor of the collector's room should be on a level with the current of the Mississippi . These apprehensions will prove groundless. All massive buildimrs in New Orleans are expected to settle from eight to ten inchos, and their structure is arranged accordingly; but the sinkin" is so uniform anl regular in all parts of thu wall, that its level is seldom broken or the building seriously injured. The St. Charit Hotel ha sunk ten or twelve inches since its foundations were laid, and without damage to tho beautiful structure. fdT The LoirsTillc & Nashfille KaiU VW , I rn-wl i tili Klowlv oroTessin. 1 he road )S still Slowly PW.""- 1 ne pressure o. me ume J - - V roctod tb nriirlc. The grading is , r principally done to Green Hirer, a distance of 75 miles, and the track will be completed by August, and the rirer crossed by November nex', and it U predicted the whole line to Nashfille will be finished in less than two years. This road is to hare an important influence on the trade of Qrren Hirer county, tlwugh we do not think it can divert the heavy hhipments of produce that now comes to us, from this point. It may carry some of our Dry good and Grocery trade to Louisville. Walkku's Resiqxatiox. The telegreph this morning gives us a full report of Gov. Walker's letter of resignation; to the President. It does not fulfil all the expectation formed of it from the pre liminary announcement of iis contents. He is, however, bold and explicit in his views., and ho fully justifies his course, and his present position, by the terms on whici he accepted the office, and the subseqnent instructions of the President. It is said there will be no reply to this let ter. and it is not certain the resignation will be accepted. CoSGKKSIuNAL CoKRCPTIOS The fraud attempted by Mr. Collom, the Ute Clerk of the U. S. Ilou-e of Hepresenta " lives consisted in a collusive arrange . ment with a large numler of the menv bers of the iluse by which they were to receive one-half price of the books in "" cash," and give receipts for them, which . would enable Collom to draw the mon ey from the Government without purchasing a single book. By this csy operation the dishonest Clerk would have pocketed hlf the book fund without spending a dollar of it for tho purpose for which it was appropriated. This would have succeeded admirably, but the publishers of the books were likely to ruined by having their books un sold, an I they htve male the expote. CoLLom's arrangements could not have been advantageous unless it had embricd most of the members. A large portion of the House must have been concerned in it. The disgraceful expose is new evidence of the shameless degradtirrand corruption that prevail among honorable tnemliers of Congress; it proves that for the paltry sum of SIO) or o to each, the members of the House were induced to participate in a disgraceful fraud upon the public treasury. 07" The convicts in the Indiana Penitentiary number at present 342 of whom 6 only are. females, and 23 negroes. An old man 72 years of age is among the inmates, convicted of passing counterfeit money. trJ A writer from Santa Fo, New Mexico, says they have there four kinds of mcat for brcak'ast, viz : ram, lamb, sheep and mutton, and occasionally a chicken pie made ut of kittens. Potatoes sell for S per bushel, t Bickens for 50 tents a piece, corn $ I 50 per bushel, and other articles at proportionate rates. taflUu wcuihvr cvcr-lay morning was clear and p:e.isnt. In tho afternoon tlw sky was wvercast, with, indications of more rain. s

The latest intelligence from Utah is by the way of San Francisco. The papers of that city are occupied with the warlike preparations of the Mormons, and their violcnt threats of hostility and vengeance against the citizens of the U. States, on every side of them. A Mr. Aiken, who had come through Salt Lake under a pass from the Mormon Military authorities had arrived in California and published a statement made under oath, of what he saw in Utah. He says the Mormons had taken a vote at Salt Lake City, that if the United States Army forced its way into Utah, that they themselves would burn their city, towns, forts, &c., and lay every habitation in ashes; that they had already picked out secret places in the mountains, to "cahe" [sic] their provisions, and make their future above with the Indians. The surgeon of the Mormon army stated that arrangements were already entered into that provided the army should enter the settlements, that every city, town, and village in the State of California, Missouri, and Iowa, should be burned immediately—that they had men to do this who were not known to be Mormons! And that they would cut off all the emigrant trains, army stores, provisions, stock, &c.; that no man, woman or child should hereafter cross the Plains without being scalped! That they depended upon and expected the Indians to perform this inernal [sic] and cowardly part of their designs. The Mormons are certainly earnestly pre= paring for war, and we should not be surprised if, ere this, the troops under Col. Johnson had come in deadly couflict with them. The Mormon citizens every where expressed the most exasperated feelings against the citizens of the United States, and proclaimed in the most violent language their purpose, of seeking bloody retaliation for the sufferings they were made to endure. ----- ----->We have received from the publishers, Leonard Scott & Co.. of New York, their reprint of the November isMie of the North British Review. The ankles of this number are on subjects of deep interest, cmbraceing "Slavery and tbe Slave States," 4,Genesis and Science," Alison's Histories," Scottish Metaphysicians," "Travels in Arabia and Palestine,? &c.
