IIU losses, however, must chiefly be in the deprivation of anticipated profits, and not a loss of actual in vestment. II y land rpecu lation and matrimony with a plantation well stocked with fat ncjrocs, he had accu mulated "an independent fortune." I"Two colored widows of tho black fcteward lost on board of the atcamship Central America, appeared at the same time in Court in New York to claim hi estate. They wore utranircr U each other, and were ignorant of their common relation to the frame husband. One set up a marriage in New York, of a few years stum'.iiijr. The 'other proved a ten year' prior luarriag in California. Yiconin bus suffered severely from the unfuithfulnes of her public servants. Her larirc school fund ha been lost, or its security endangerea by the corrupt management bf it. The people have Wen a good tcril perplexed of late ilout the Midden and mysterious wealth ot Gov. llushford, who went ihto office, two year ajro, a poor man. and his official (salary is only $1.250 per annum, and he isjibout to retire rich. How heconld do so was a mystery, until tho Milwaukic News threw li-rht upon the subject. The Governor, much uguint tho wih of the people of Milwaukic, approved the La Crosse Railroad grant of lands; and for the executive approval, $10,000 in cash and 1 30 ,000 in bonds was paid. Tns Kixtccky Bancs. Tho Louisville Journal condemns the infatuation of the Bank Director in Louisville, for persisting " in the foolish and impracticable resolution to keep up specie payment. It says: "Although we deeply dv-plore the result although we have refused to recognise the probability of a suspension by the Kentucky banks, it must bo clear to every intelligent and reflecting mind that it will bo beer folly, abaci ute madness, lor them to attempt a continuance in specie payment with New Orlcan and N'ew York, and indeed all other bank in the Union, in njension. The only result of mch an ctf.-rt, the certain, the dreadful result, will be to break uown the commerce ati i the industry and agriculture of the State, and then to lall at last from absolute exhaustion. An immediate, au instant su.opcnMoti i the dictate alike of wisdom and sound policy.1 It is wily a question of a few days; a week will clone thorn up in spite of all their resolves. Cuelsea. Mr. Willard Carpenter succeeddein finding bidder for nearly one hundred lota in hi new town of Chelsea at the crossing of tho Straight Line and the O. & M. road. The company was nearly all from the surrounding counties, and most of the lots purchased were for improvement. Tho bidding was quite spirited notwithstanding the prevailing money panic and tho active op position of the citizen of Washington. It is a matter of surpriso that any purchasers were found under the circumstances, but we learu that some lots sold as high as $20). Marriage ix High Life. A daughter of James Robb, the wealthy Banker of New Orleans, was married to Gen. San Ramon, of the SpamVh army, at tho Royal Palace of Malmaison, near Paris, a few week since. The invitation were issued in the name of cx-Queen Christina, who gave away the bride. The bride is a young and most lovely and interesting girl. Of the bridegroom, nothing i said, whether he be old and rich, or young, gallant and dashing ; but being General in the army, wo presume he has attained the maturity of life. The acquaint anco is said to have been formed in Cuba, , where tho General has leen stationed, and Mr. Robb, the father, is the chief owner of the Gas work in Havana, in which Queen Christina i a partner, or has a l&rgo inter est ; so tho social connexion ha probably grown ont of commercial relations.
