THURSDAY MORNING OCT. 15.
What is to he our Currency ! A general suspension of specie payroents is now an inevitable event, and the query arises with every one what is to be our circulating medium ? If it be a one unredeemable in coin, it is necessary that it should have some basis, in which the people can put some confidence. Our new State Bank will withdraw her own issues, and avoid a protest of her bills to preserve her valuable franchises, the last of the kind, we presume, that will ever be granted to a similar institutions in this State. She wilt hesitate at no pecuniary loss to heiself, and will be heedless of the sacrifices that will be entailed upon the community, to preserve her important privileges and rights intact. In the excited party feeling that has been aroused against this institution she has no hope of any indulgence from popular opinion ; and even if theLegislature wife disposed to release the Bank from the Denalties of suspension, thenro7 a visions of our constitution forbid it. The constitution declares that " no law shall be passed sanctioning, directly or indirectly, the suspension, by any bank or banking company, of specie piyroents.'; The new State Bank has prepared herself with the determination to meet all liabilitics, under every contingency and at any cost, in specie, and thus preserve her charter. She will continue to use the amount of her capital actually paid in u&ut that will bo in an unavailable ' form for an active business, and her course mi i i ' t : l will ue. uy necesMiy, a viriuai urpension of business, until a general resonip tion shall recar; unless as it would be i?.? r - i .1- 1 11 ponuc .or tier 10 uu M.e m.uu.u pruurc the bills of some other Banks, at a low rate of interest, and by receiving them 00 deposit and in payment of paper due her, she could give such bills currency i r i in the State, and use them instead of her notes, and thereby givo the people a . . , , , bankable medium on which to do business. Such a courso hhe will probably , , , , adopt if the suspension becomes general and is likely to be a protracted one. . . e A. . . ' Kentucky Hospitality. Every one who has visited the State Fair, at Henderson, cannot but have noticed the evi dent desire of the Kentuckians, who have charge of the arrangements, to make their guests comfortable. Houses are thrown open, the tables spread on the grounds are free to ail who wish to partake, and the committee of reception are untiring in their efforts In securing comfortable Quarters for strangers. The . v Court House has been turned into a vas dormitory, where those who cannot se cure beds elsewhere, are kindly wel corned. Amusements have been planned for every evening in the week, and everything which the kindness and fore thought of the good citizens could devise has been done to render the Fair attrac tivc and pleasant to all. From our own Corretotient.) Kentucky State Fair. Fair Grocnd, Henderson, Kt..1 Wednesday ilorn'g.Oct. 1457. f Mr. Caklilk : It is intimated that there
were four thousand persons on the Fair Ground on Tuesday. To day thero ia a decided increase in numbers, as well as interest. The earth having been moistened with rain during the night, the traveling is good, and at an early hour in the morning, the tide of people turned toward the t air ground. 1 he number in attendance at 12 M., will reach near or quite ten thousand. The most ob servable feature in the crowd, is its orderly character in fact, the entire absence oftbat kind of genteel rowdyism, which seems to take a kind of license on similar occasions. There is no drinking consequently, no hal looing or guarding nothing to annoy the most fastidious taste. The entries of horned cattle, and horses were mostly from the neighboring counties Honors were as easy as ever before on any similar occasion. One gentleman, a large grower of cattle, "took the blue" on eight, und one certificate on nine entries. Iiis ag gregate premiums amounted to two hundred and thirty dollars, and h j estimates the ad vanced value of his herd at over two thousand dollars. .With more competition be might have passed liss successfully, although his stock was exceedingly meritorious. The sales of cattle which took place on Tuesday at one o'clock P. M.t were very limited. Out of several transfers it is doubtful if one ac tuai sale was made, lo-aay results in a similar observation, sustained by evidence from the proper parties. The Agricultural Ball which came off at WoodrufTs Hall last night, was attended largely by tho beauty from abroad and thc city of Henderson. A sumptuous supper was spread in tho room below, to which sev eral hundred l.vtles and gentlemen did am pie justice. . This morning the show of stallions, mares. and draft horses was meagre enough in uumbor, but fair as regards the style and shape of the various animals. Fine sad dle and harness horses will occupy the ring on Thursday, when an exciting seetacle will c witnessed, as the competing animals arc suid to be the best horses in thc State. At 1) o'clock to-day, Gov. Powell, who had been unwell tor several days, and whose appearance h id been regarded as doubtful, took the stand, and for one hour entertained the people with a thoughtful, forcible, and dignified address on tho imortancc of Agri culture .o individuals, State and nations His facts were arranged with great cart, and bis review of the history of man as a farmer from the errlicst period in history, were presented with great pungency. As this graoolul parfonnaneo will soon meet the eye of the public in pamphlet form, it is unnecessary here to speak of it ut greater length. The exhibition of machinery of tho vari ou finer creations of art in tbo products of the soil, und in the floral and horticultural department, have made but slight accessions to tho Fair si nee my report of yesterday. It is said by thoso who have thc opportu nity for judging of what they speak, that iiiiiu-keiiius vi in ih;.ji jirvnviib iu-ubjt urv from tliu counties aJjuccnt, on the Kentucky and IuJiunu tlla of the river. It is oltcrvcd that the attendance from abroad is in vcrv limited numbers. Even the jude and al ternates uro rarely present V perform thc duticrt ui?ncd them. J. 11. S. J5. Xr.W YORK CaNAUS. We find in the Providence Journal an abstract of tho statistics furnished by the fourth annual report of tho registrations of births, marriagea and deaths in Ithodo Inland. These figures cover the year 1336, during which tho births woro 2006; mjrriages 1535; deaths 2042. Uf 2S86 children born, the sex is recorded thus: males 147V, females 1407. Tho male uniformly preponderate among the births. Of 2003 crsons who died, thc her is given as 1020 males, and females. This shows an execs of males, but in a series of years it seems that the deaths show the females preponderating very slig'utly. More than onet'onrth of ail the deaths recorded are cf infants under 2 years of age. Last year the average ago of all who died was 28. 62. Among the colored population of the State tho mortality is ninch higher than amongthe whites, in proportion tonnmber. While in the general population dnring the year 1550 the births outnumbered the deaths, the recorded tatistics of the colored popalation for the amo time show an excess of deaths. Of all the children born during the year, 14S1 wer born of American parentage, 1124 of foreign and 162 mixed. Cvkrknct in St. Louis. The St. Louis Kepublk-a says: A great portion of tho Eastern paper has gone home, tho notes of the Ohio, Indiana, Louisiana and Kentucky banks, against which the bankers discriminate without any show of reason, are beconinsr exceedingly scarce; and the much-abned Illinois paper is now being sought after with avidity. Those who have heretofore doubted its security, after seeing Mr. Henry's letter, and knowing the real value of Missouri securities, are dosed to look npon it with more favor. If ailures continue in the East, and banks go out as they are doing everj day, Illinois paper will soon coma up to be a kind of circulation which will be regarded as about as good as any other afloat, excepting, of conrsc, our own Missouri paper.-
