CT SEK FI118T PAUE.j Suspension of Specie Payments. The Cincinnati papers begin to think the suspension of specie payments is in
evitable. When we declared weeks ago that the sad result was unavoidable, they
then persisted in reiterating tho declara tion there was no danger and no cause of alarm. Tha causes have been opera tin?; and gathering strength in the whele course of commerce for several years, and their effects will be felt throughout the commercial world. They are not to be sought for in the fluctuations of our metallic or banking currency, but in ex cessive speculations and the consequent inflated prices of all objects of purchase and sale, which has in its turn led to an expansion of commercial credit and in
debtedness, till ttat which supports the but the whoje 0pet jre is the candi- himself in a state of almost insensible iachief movements of trade, and is, by a d te f ftll Dart;es, an(j has no oblizations toxication till he accomplished his pur-

I Is it not tho idlest delusion to look to .... them for relief when we look at the true causes of the trouble, and understand the meaning of "the scarcity of money." The Cincinnati Gazette says, " two evils are now before the community, and as we hive heretofore remarked, one or the other must be accepted. One is a tal suspension of specie payment, and . .. other a prostration of mercantile gene the credit." The prostration of mercantib credit has already occurred. The suspension of specie payment will allow old transactions to be settled on the basis of values in which they were incurred. Which is Simply a measure Of justice. A correspondent from Leavenworth City says it was the most quiet and orderly election he ever witnessed. Thd Free State men had everything their own way. The election was an animated one in all the towns, but not a single serious dif ficulty had been reported. United States troops were posted in the neigh borhood of various towns where there was reason to apprehend collisions be tween the two parties, but there was no occasion to call them into service. 03r A family at Kewanec, Illinois, were all taken violently ill after eating breakfast on the 7th inst.. evidently from effects or poison in their food. The coCT.ie mill had been put up in an open porch accessible from the outside, and on examining it. the remains of arsenic and corrosiTe sublimate were found in its crevices. It was at once suspected that some malicious person had durin- the night thrown the poisonous substances into the mill and they had been ground up with the coffee, which had been pre pared fur breakfast. Two persons against whom some members of the family had given testimony on a charge of burglary, were arrested on suspicion of being the perpetrators of tho diabolical act. Two of the family are in a very precarious sfate, with little hopes of recovery.
Tho Election.
Our citizens must net forget that 'there is an election to-day for a member of Congress in this district, and for important county officers. There is so little said upoitho subject in the streets and in private circles, and the Enquirer, which is the peculiar organ of the friends of the candidates, has been so entirely "mum" I on the subject, that there is danger that many voters may not be aware of the important event, and fail to fulfill their duty. Judge Nibblack is certainly a most fortunate aspirant for political honors; a young man without great talents I he receives the nomination without bar ing resorted to intrigue or making an effort for it, and is about to be elected by unanimous consent, without having marie a Rneech. or snent an hour to se- . .
