EVANSVILLE, IND. . t - WEDNESDAY MORNING; SEPT. 9. Democratic County Convention. The poor pretence for a convention, assembled' in the name "of "Democracjlit SUnsiia's Grove,, od Saturday. There wer about-forty persons preeat; onethird of these; .were inditferent spectators of the. farce.'. The active participants wore about equally divided in opinion," in regard 'to the plans to be adopted; and their measures-were -consequently decided by the votes of; about .fifteen persons; and nearly all. of those who formed the majority wero office holders, of anxious', and hopeful '.expectants of otSce, j T through . some shrewd party manceuverings. They were therefore most stre.iuous advocates of party dis ciplines and the undisputed authority of conventions. The assembly had not the hardihood to propose to make any nominatioas at present, in- defiance of the recent unmistakable condemnation of such a proceeding by the popular senti ment of their own party; but they ' concocted plans, by which they hope to usurp the power, and control the action of .the party in its future movements. These fifteen or twenty self-constituted representatives of the . Democracy of Vanderburgh, voted that the whole con trol of the party should be given to a Democratic Central Committee. ThU measure bein carried in spite of the protest of neaity oae-half the thirty or forty active participants, and by the votes of only 10 or 17 men, these modest and anxiously patriotic office holders, immediately set to woik to constitute the august committee, which they made up of their own names and a few subservient manageable friend. By this' sort of legerdemain these gentlemen suppose they have shuffled to themselves the trumps and hold the power in the political game. Without the semblance of authority, they gather together and appoint a body twice as numerous as themselves, anl claim for it an authority to speak in the name of the whole party.' Under the name of this bogus body- a ; fiction and an imposture to delude the honest and simple voters these party wire pullers usurp the political power of .the State. A clique of men, whose moral, intellectual, social, or financial weight would not be missed, on a single ; street ; in the city, or in a rural neighborhood in the county, if they were all, by some fortunate event, taken from the community, foist themselves into a political position, and by adroit management get control of their party, and through the power of that party, obtain the entire command of the political affairs- of the people. Men who would not be -entrusted with the control of the smallest private estate, contrive to get into their hands, the offices the honors the revenues and the power to frame the laws of a rich and populous State. Is. it strange that political honors have lost their attraction to honorable menthat an official commission is beginning to be regarded as a license to peculate on the public that official integrity is an historical virtue, lost in the floods of political corruption that public virtue and patriotism are only hollow pretences to gull the people that the government, itself is viewed as anorganization, to be used for the benefit only of thet partizan horde that shall get possession of it ; is there any mystery in ;his deplorable state . of affairs, while , this system of bogus conventions is tolerated by either of the great political parties, and are managed by such men as in evitably will get control of them ? There is very little difference in the character of the conventions of either party. . They are got up simply as instruments in the hands of the leaders of each. Twenty men in each party, in every county of the State, direct through them, the movements of their respective parties. Forty men in each of the seventy three counties, select all the candidates of both parties, and direct the suffragej-of-the -voters, either for or againit this or that -man. Yhichevcr party triumphs, the virtual control of the government is in the hands of about fitcen hundred political jobbr3 who direct these primary meetings,, and manufacture a factitious public opinion. If such an usurpation had been accom plished by force,; the people would rise and exterminate the tyrants at a' Tl6w. But so long as party delusions canbe maintained and the cunning' and frauds of the leaders be concealed, the people will blindly, submit. Do the . people of Indiana know that they are ruled and made the puppstg of iass than a thousand subordinate political leaders, scattered through the, seventy-three counties of the State, and those subordinates are acting in. qbedienca to half a dozen superior demagogues, who have the whole real political power of the State in their' hands ? and yet such w notor iously the case. Will the people o Vandcrburg -its true genuine democracy submit to the dictation of such men as controJed the convention on Saturday ? Let them demand a publi- ; r -r ör tiyie,'pir3eedinss' afcd'a by ' - lin;y thev were adopted. t 07" Mr. Thomai Ager,' keeps us" in debtel to him. and himself in f rnembfahce,1 T by' regulaV 1 package' o Oregon and Washington priors.
North West Indians v-j,. It appears that a tribe of friendly
Iad'tau3,called tfie Sissitons have, at the instigation of the officers of the govern ment, been pursuing and killing the band of Indians, who committed the murders at Spirit Lake in Iowa, last winter. At the last accounts the whole band of marauders had been killed except one, who had fled to another tribe called the Yankton's, who udertook" to protect him from his pursuers, the Sessitons, when a battle ensued, in which twenty-five of the Sessitons, and a large number of the Ysnktons were killed. ' 07" Rents have fallen off rapidly in Chicago, since the . money pressure be came stringent. In some parts of the city they hae declined to nearly one half. The depression in money matters has cooled the fever of land speculators, and thrown a large, amount of property upon the market. The fastest city in the Union is likely to see pay day come with disastrous consequences to many of its citizens. 07" The Petersburg Reporter thinks the canal needs another reservoir between that town and Evansville. When a break occurs, it requires a lon time to re till the canal for a dbtance of twenty miles, with a fall of only one inch to the mile. There is an eligible place for a reservoir a few miles' below Petersburg, where one could be constructed at a very small cost, which would materially, aid in keeping tho lower level in a tollable sUgo. . , . . . 07" Wo publish a communication today from Judge Foster, that may lead to some beneficial results,' if 'U be adopted in the light spirit, and the object of the meeting be made truly and sincerely, to investigate the alfairs of the road, for the urpose of coming, to a better under standing between tho stockholders and contractors, and doing: something in good faith to get the road through. Dis sensions and mutual jealonsies, are tho bane of f all public enterprises, and we have sometimes feared they would be the ruin of. the road; and we would hail a reconciliation of feeling, and a union of ellbrt in this work as a great public blessing. , "'.' XThbody of a man was found on the Pacific Railroad, 13 miles west of St. Louis; on Friday, completely severed in two at the waist, and tho upper' por tion of the body lying on one side, the rail, the lower pn the other, and every shred between them severed. It is sup posed he fell from the cars and was run over by the train. f" Omo Stock.' $100,000 of Ohio State G per cent, stock, redeemable in 188Cf was sold in New York last week, at prices varying from 93 down as low as 00. The same stock was taken of the State last winter at 100. The best paper in New York is shaved at the rate of 12 to 18 oer cent. - Lower crades are sold at 2 and 3 per month.
