ÄHc gailn loarral. 1.VANSYILLE. IND. MONDAY MORNING.. AUGUST 81. Tue Old Slave Titide. It surprises u-j, on recurring to the past, to learn hovr recently the odious traffic, which now excites so much hor ror at its contemplation, "has been suppressed. Iiis scarcely fifty years since it T.-as prosecuted with the utmost activity and -gor. From lS'J to 1Sj7 there were imported into the little town ot Bristol. Hhode Island a seaport that did not contain a population of ÜUOO more than It 00 slave annually. The whole number imported within the period was 3,011, all from the coast of At rica. During the sania time there were brought into Newport, a town Within 12 exile of Bristol, in the same State, and now the famous and attractive watering place, 34SS slaves. Providence in the same Suite, received 55). Uart.'urtl, Jonn., 250, and Boston, 200, in the same years. The glares brought into Uhode Island, write but a small portion of the number her citizens were taking from the coast of Africa directly to the West Indies and iaUtha ports of the Southern States. Fifty-nine slao ships, belonged at that time to the little State of Hhode Inland. which have descended to hef citizens were create 1 by tins trailic; and bat a few ears ao there wore men living in that State, among the honored and wealthiest of the inhabitants, who had been activw participants in the trade, or owned the chips ttial carried the human cargoes One of her Senators m Cong less, as kite as 18-6 or 1SJS, commenced his life as a slaver between the coast of Africa am the West India Iland; and he had thip enznued in it till the tn.da ws suppre ed by Ian if not afterwards also. II died out a fr.v years ago, bequeathing lortune of millions to his children, who are at this day classed in the highest ranks of society. These (acts exhibit the cxtraordiuary revolutions of public opinion fiotu one generation to another, and prove how much the prevailing opinions of the world modify our moral sentiments and impulses. Hendesson. Nearlv all the streets in this pleisant sister city, are being newly graded and side walks laid, which will add tu ich to the attractiveness of the town, and bnn its beautiful daughterin charming clusters more frequently upon the public pioineovules. The new liitik which i jut coiuplcied, is .-aid to be one of the mot elegant structures, in Southwestern Kentucky. One thousand bushels of coal are daily raised from the mines, near the city, and this quantity will lie increased as the demand for winter consumption advances. I' he salt eil his been sunk n.urly lCUO feet, and the water has improved in streath with the increase ot depth. There is now no doubt that salt can be profitably manu factured Irom it. Ve are rulormsd that in the last two hundred feet of the boring. , the augur went through a strata of coal, 13U0 and 11U0 feet below .the surface. If it be a workable vein, it will likely Drove to bo o! superior quality. Our coal beds have a lower depth than we supposed, and will be inexhaustible in ges upon ages of tide. Scfuejie Jcdges There is a desire expressed by the most conservative papers of both parties, that in the can vas for the relecticn of tha two Sunreme Judges, a pirty contest mav be avoided that candidates hall be selected for their ability and integrity. The influence of the Court :nd tho character of the btate, haYe been impaired by t-election of candidates for their po'itical availability. It ij to be hoped that these just sentim;nts nay prevail. The Locansport Journal mentions Daniel D. Pratt, of that place, as a nan eminently qualified for a seat on the Supreme Bench. His nomination is approved by tho State Journal and other papers. His political sympathies are not indicated by those who have brought his nasr.o for ward, and we don't know what they are. The Bcbdell Estate. A brother of Dr. Burdell, living in Columbus, Ohio, nd a brother in-law, a resident cf New York, are to bo appointed administrators of the deceased's estate, which is valued, by appraisement, at $10.U00. Of-this C3.0U0 was real estate, and $!000 ieronal property. The personal consisted of stock in the Artisans Bank, of that city, and his dental apparatus books, furniture, &c , at No. 31 'Bond street The real estate embraces No. 4 an 1 31 Bond street, and some land and buddings in Herkimer county. The real estate when dipoed, will ' be fold subject to the claims, that Mrs. Cunningham may set up. f7A gentlemm and lady landing from the cars at Lafayette, the other da;, at firm sight were inspired w ith a sudden recognition, and rushed passionately into each other's arms the fun of it was, that after most endearing kisses crtd ex clamations, they found themselves entire strangers to each other. The lady had mistaken him for "dear cousin Charlie," while he, with a half defined recollection of having seen her before, went in lemon and "got squeezed." Their mu tual euiharra-.ment upon the discovery
of the mistake, can well be imagined.
The African Mate TradeFrom various indications in Europe,
the idea of supplying the West Indies with free labor from Africa, is silently and purely making its progress. We venture to predict that in ten years. African slave trade will Ikj more active than it was in the lth century. t appears from the London Mercantile Gazette that the new supplies of negroes to be furnihed by the French government had began to arrive at Martinique. It also appears that the French govern tuent has been for some years carrying on the same trade in African labor, from Madagascar to the isle of Bourbon, and that the vessels employed have been (alien in with bv British cruisers, but not molested, they "having a government officer on board, who made no secret ol his occupation." IIokss Thieves. The Wabash valley teem filled with horse thieves and coun ttrfeiters, this season. The Lafayette Courier says great excitement was caused at Attica, in 'Fountain county, on Monday, by the arrest and trial of two horse tbieve, by the natiies of George Kelson and James' Man in '; the latter had'beer. ferryman at Williamsport on the WabashNelson was arrested for stealing a horse which he had gotten from Martin, and which Martin had stolen. Both were bound over to Court. Nelson ditnlged the names of alout fi tv horse-thieves in Fountain, Warren, Montgomery and Tippecanoe counties. A n um I er of those implicated in his confession reside in Lafayette, aid aro men hitherto unsuspected of crime. But little reliance is placed uon his statements. Wheat. Wheat is selling at Hickman at 1K)3 $1 a bushel. Thirty thousand bushels were shipped fiom that place las, week. I'he Arus is very much elated at the busines of Hickman, and savs that in a few yeais, the exports of Hickman will reach ten millions of wheat per annum, twenty millions of corn, and tobacco and hay beyond all calculation. 5" A Market street merchant in Philadelphia, by the aid of an accomplice, seduced a respectable young lady by moans of a fictitious private marriage. before a pretended alderman. A certifi cate was given in due form, which satis lied the girl's mother of the regularity of the proceedings. The girl was taken to an obscure hoarding house by the man, where they lived a season as man and wife, when he deserted her, and sent a note to the landlady that the girl was not his legal wife, and she was turned into the streets. Criminal proceedings have been commenced against the villain and his accomplice, und it is to be hoped that they will find a cell in the penitentiary as their abode for a Jew years. 07" In the authorised statement of the Life and Trust Company's affair, we observe that the principal Cincinnati office, is in debt to the New Yoik agency in a large balance of Vou.OUO. We cannot see how the principal bank could have leeu embarrassed by the New York agency, which was a large creditor to the mother institution. We hhould sup osc from this bhosving, the Cincinnati concern caused tho failure of the fger.cy. The whole means of the principal instition appear to be in Ileal Estate Bonds and mort!iges, and unavailable corpo ration aad railroad securities. It had no actual banking capital except its do posits. fjOThe whole taxable property in Vincennes this year is $1,3'.)2,530. In crease the past year $118,235; the proper ty of the entire county of Knox is asses sed at $3.525,530. Increase the past year, about $250,000. The rate of increase in Vincennes is only about Sjjper cent. It does not appear what portion of this is in the rise of real estate. Our neighlors of the Gazj'te can't boast verj loudely of this evidence of prosperity which has been beaten fco badly by towns sutTering from the oppressive and dcleUrious influence' of slavery. Where the Silver ha goiie to. From statistics, it is estimated that two hundred million dollars of silver ha- been sent to India and withdrawn from the commerce of other por tions of the world within the last seven, years. It does not appear how this vast amount has been absorbed by India, for the people of India have been grow ng poor and suffering a depletion of wealth the last rifty years. We beliee there is some 'a! lacy in the statement. Q7"A few evenings sinco when the passenger train on tha Bostcft and Lowt'l railroad arrived at the latter place, the conductor on inspecting the trucks, etc , iwund several henS roosting upon the truck fr-tue of one el "the cars, hating one to roust in Boston and maintained their position till they arrived at Lowell.'
CO" By a census just taken in Mt Vernon, it appears the town has a popu
lation of 1,783; the increase during the year has been two hundred or twelve per cent. OCT On the 8th of August, Michigan Southern railroad stock sold in X. York at fZ. To day it is reported in our telegraphic column at 184 . Pennsylvania Coal Company stock, ten days ago was worth 8o(ä90 per cent. It sold Friday in New YorK at G4'. 07" A negro in llopkinsville, Ky., one day last week, assaulted an Irishman, and cut his throat, completely severing the wind pipe, and intActing a fatal wound. The negro was arrested and imprisoned, but at the lost accounts, a mob had taken him from the jail with Tho intention of lynching him. Two Mejj Bl'used in a Canal boat, The Harrisburgh (Pa.) Chronicle of the 2ith inst., contains a thrilling. ac count of a fire on lioard of a canal boat. A boat lying i.. the canal at Harrisbtirg, took fire on the 23d. near midnight. Two negroes sleeping :n the boat were burned in a, shocking manner and died after a few hours of great agony. The lioat was ret on Cre, and a while man hud been arrested charged with the crime. Flour. The St. Louis pnpers think it f trange that wheat should 1 brought Iroin the Ohio, within lOO miles of Louis ville, a passage of 50U miles, to that maikct to 13 mnnufactured, instead of being ground at Louiaville." The explanation is a simple one. The St. Louis millers are thelest manufacturers they make more Hour out of the same wheat, and a St. Louis brand will bring 23 cents more a barrel than any other brand if the same quality. So much for a good name. A Tennessee Sign. A railroad friend who has just returned from a Southern trip, has left on our desk a copy of a sign he aw in Tennessee It was posted nearly a mile from the owner's "house, on a public road and was as follows: "A innertainment ni at hand. The niest wa to Birmingham." The school teacher is needed abroad in that region, certain. (r As was -supposed the cause of the lailiir r,f tWnh.ni T if in.1 Tr,it (U

legitimate lysines. For several months it has U-?n lending money to railroad companies or: the hypothecation of their londs. To one railroad company in Ohio, it had advanced live hundred thousand dollars and its loans made in this way amount to one million five hundred thousand do:lars.
