Of tho old members of tho Senate holding over, thirteen are Know Nothings and six are Democrats. Of the new members elect ed, thirteen are Democrats and five are Enow Nothings, with one District (tho Fleming) to hear from, in which, it is feared W. An drews is elected by a clone rote. In case ho is elected, tho Senate will be a tie, and, as Lieut. Gor. Hardy's death leaves that body without a presiding officer, ono will have to bo ehonen, which, in tho present condition of affairs, may prove a tedious operation. J5T Capt. Van Dosen's new steamer New Undo Sam, may be expected to-day, en route for Now Orleans. She is described by the New Albany Ledger as tho most compact and atron treat boat, ever built at that place. She is 265 foet in length, breadth of beam 47 feet, depth of hold 8 feet. She wttl carry about two thousand tons, a capacity far exceeding any other boat on tho western waters. She has seven boilers, each 23 feet long and 40 inches 'in diameter. Her cylinders are 2d inches in diameter, and 10 feet stroke. Her water wheels are 85 feet in diameter and 18 feet buckets. She is equipped with a neat cabin, furnished in elegant style, with state rooms of nnosnal sizo and comfoit. She wai built at New Albany and as a specimen of steamboat architecture, reflects great credit ttpon tho mechanics of that city. Tho New Uncle Sam will be commanded by Capt. Charles Van Dussn, who has already successfully trod tho decks of two "Uncle Kama," neither of which, however, were so worthy of him as tho third. Success to tho Uncle Sam and Van Dosen. MsAscatxo Hat. Tho editor of the New Jersey Farmer gives his rule, based on a large experience, for measuring hsy. He formerly weighod his hsy but repeated trials taught him that it was unnecessary. Take a mow which has lain through the winter, and ascertain its amount in cubic feet, (multiplying its width by its depth, and that product by its length,) and then divido by 700, and the quotient gives the number of tons: The upper third takes 809 feet to tho ton, tho lower 600 feet. If the mow is only five or six feet deep, however, it takes an average of öw ioei to me ton. 13T Me. Maaos , U. S.
