Walker is a candidate for Jostictaf tht Peace Tl election will come tf next Monday ard we urge upon our friends the importance of going to the polls. It is an office of great responsibility, and a man should be a selected, capable of discharging its duties. Mr' Walker was for man j jears a J ost ice and was the most correct and careful officer we hare erer had. We hope the subject will receire the attention it disertes from all classes, of our business men; Mr. Wal ker will undoubtedly be elected if his friends will take the trouble to go to the polls. The present election is to fill the yacancj occasioned by the removal of Z.M. P. Carter. ———<>——— ——>Our telegraphic report Thursday stated that the plan in relation to the laying of the sub-marine cable had been changed. The Niagara will lay the first half from Ireland to the middle of the Atlantic; the end will then be joined to the other half on board the Agamemnon, which takes it on to the coast of New foundland. During the whole progress, four vessels will remain together and give whatever assistance may be re quired. Constant communication is to be kept up with the coast of Ireland during the progress of the work, and wires are at once to be carried from Kilkerney to Valencia Bay, so as to connect with the British and Irish lines. The laying of the cable will be completed by the last of next week, and if successful, we will be able to receive dispatches from the old world this month. ———<>——— Cr The Philadelphia Times charges 'the officers of tbo Mint with making the new cents of defic:ent weight. Iii standard is se rent y-two grains Troy Some of them (all abort aa much as four . grains, which on one hundred dollars would amdunt to about fire dollars and a half. The same paper suggests that a similar process in the go!i and ailrer coinage ia within the range of posMbility. OtjT Another hockin cae of abortion -and murder has just leen disclosed at Chicago. Last week a man Ly the name of Temple, bring in Bureau county Minois, brought to Chicago a ) oung girl who ' had been reared in his own family as a I foster child, (row her infancy, and carried her to a hotel and there by the aid of a physician from the same county, produeed an abortion. They then took the . girl to the bouse of a poor woman, and - giving her $5. deserted her. The hostess, after keeping her for several days. without hesring from the man who had left the girl under her charge, applied to the authorities to take her into the hos pital. A physician on being called, dis - core red her condition. She died on the succeeding day. The p die was put m i pursuit of the guilty parties, who were subsequently arrested and sent to jail. Both the-seducer. Temple, and Dr. Swanaey, the physician, are men jf large wealth, and hare maintained, heretofore, charac ers of high respectability. It ap pears that their rictim opposed being carried to the city and refuseJ to submit -to their designs. 'In the cars she resisted ' and appealed for aid, but these highly re- ' speoUblo gentlemen told the spectators 'that she was a lunatic whom they had in charge, and not to mind what she said; she found herself a helpless rictim in their hands. 'Wh arrested they were exceedingly agitated' and trembled tio lently. - It' is to be hoped their money will not sare them fpxn the gallows. ' Fla Baasles for Fate. Mr. J . F.
