Many Iookuponit as threatening the overthrow of the British Empire in India. In the the Europeans may be reduced to the position of the French army when in Spain, downing only the ground they stood on." ; In the House of Commons the new . African slave trade policy of France and England was discussed. Lord Falmerston acknowledged that the sjsgreat abolitionist- iid not object to it.' 'l"he trade of Great Britain on the African coast, it was said, produces as much as $15,000,000 ———<>——v ——>A large, four story brick store in St. Louis, occupied by a wine and liquor dealer, fell at midnight on Thursday, with a crash, into a perfect ruin. A gentleman standing near says the first warning was a quick cracking, and looking up he saw in the wall of the building a sudden opening along the line of the fourth floor, which, while he ran, was instantly succeeded by the descent of the whole wall, from the cornice to the pavement. Five persons, were in the building, who were buried in the ruins. They were all severely injured, and at first were supposed to be mortally hurt; but hopes are now entertained they will all recover. The building was eight or nine years old, and badly built, and the immediate cause of the accident was the overloading the upper stories with a heavy stock of wine and liquors. ———<>——— ! wMMMiitsa.iiwia- s s - ,07" A geptleman living in Mercer street, ew York, left his house at halfpast ten on Tuesday evening, to go to a store within a block or two of his own dwelling, and shortly afterwards was found dead upon the side walks, with marks of violence upon his head and Deck, though not sufficient of themselves to produce death. His pockets were turned inside out and every thing of val ue taken. There was no testimony to ahow how he came to his death The whole matter is involved in mystery ; the Coroner's inquest rendered a verdict of death by violence, and recommend a reward be offered for the arrest of the murderer. ; (T Orestes A. Brownson, the Amer ican champion of Popery, and editor o Brownson's Review, is getting to be very troublesome and unmanageable to the Church. He has now been thirteen years a convert to the Catholic faith longer than he ever held any other creed and having rendered his allies important services, assumes now the privilege to declare his own opinions and to repri mand the dignitaries of the hierarchy. He still professes attachment to Rome but in his Quarterly of late, he is exhib iting her faults and follies without mer cy. In his last number he is especially severe upon what he calls the bigotry, narrowness and intolerance of the American Roman Catholic press, and also upon the clergy of France, for their unprincipled support and adulation of Napoleon. He asserts that it is in vain to attempt to make the religion of Borne congenial to the laws of liberty, in view of the thorough going support given by the Catholics to despotism in Europe. Facti will speak louder than the most eloquent ; representations of the priests or the press. (KT The health of Mrs. Pierce, wife of the ex-President, is very feeble,' and so precarious that the President has been unable as yet to determine upon a permanent dwelling place. 'It is supposed he will take up his residence in Concord, "M. Ii.
