While Paducah has thus risen to prominence and prosperity, Smithland, her rival, has become a deserted village. The difference has been caused' by tbe spirit that has actuated the- leading men in the two places. . In one the businessman havA irntrn frftm. atrial I nnsssinn . . . . . . .. .i into ample fortunes by building up the town. In the other a few men who had made money, were content with what it , , . , . ... they possessed, and wished no rivals m wealth. These have sunk into-poverty by tbe fall in tbe osUtes which they once counted as substantial wealth, but which proved worthless, when. labor and bustness deserted them. Not a more striking lesson is 'any where to U gained from the fate of two towns. A Bloody Affray. Our town and vicinity have been un der an intense excitement since Thürs day last, growing out of the negro vio lenca committed on the Edmunds fami . I ly in the Bayou. The admission of tbe negro to bail, and a long: series of offences which their neighbors have been treasuring up-against the colony of blacks, who live in the-Uttom some five or six miles below town, had aroused fin. r th. na;AKArhA tn a, termination to get rid-of the clan of blacks, at all hazards, and on Friday night .i u .j ,1 I m )icbuuciivu iHHa ta uiiug vu mein I .ii;nM K. -ui vf -Kit,, mmiM itv a va w viiuia J wva. vs wv mbw I men- cathered. no one knows where. . numbering 50 or 7o. The negroes-it appears were prepared for them, and had armed themselves, and loop-holed their cabins. Which party made the ' first assault or fired the first gun is not known. About 12 o'clock at night a brisk fusilade was opened and kept up for some minutes,, after whioh a ruah was made at the house, and the door broken ic, when a hand to hand struggle ensued in which bowie knives, clubs, and oleav- . ers were the weapons used. Many on ; both sides were severely cut and beaten. A man by the name of Alexander Mad dux received- three outs in the bead, . the shoulder, and arm Another man by the name of Joseph Glass received a ball in the head. Glass h reported dead and Maddux is in a very critical situation. A German was shot in the thigh, aad had one of his fingers shot off. Many "others were slighaly wounded It was exceedingly difficult to get at the truth of the matter amid the excitement and con fiicting statements. Both parties were serious v beaten- in the engagement, but we have not .heard of any fatal wounds except -v those : . mentioned. An old black woman,' the mother of the family j received a severe blow upon the head from a gun stock, and a-black boy was knocked down with a pistol barrel. One white man-was severely cut on the head. from a blow with a cleaver which- left a . largo look of hin hair and a pool of- blood on the floor. Lyle's house is half a mile from the main road, in-a secluded spot in tho woods. At the time of the at tack the blacks say there were but five ' or six black men in the house, the other inmates were eight or ten women and 'children. The house exhibited the marks of rifle balls and charges of shot in. fear or five different places. The door which was strongly fastened was a a Deaten in-by s lence ran. ine negroes declare they did not fire till after the door was forced open. Tbe other party say the persons shot reeeived their wounds outside the house and before the door was forced in. On Saturday the- excitement was increased by tie above occurrences and a more serious and a wider combination was evidently forming to drive off or exterminate the blacks, who Jfortn a community of 150 or' 200 in the bottom.Serious apprehensions were felt that a
bloody drama would be entctsd. Sever
judicious citizens addressed a note to to Sheriff Gavitt, who aided by Sheriff Hall, and Sheriff McBnde repaired pnvately to the cabins of the blacks,-in - ticipation of the movements of the v.: a i r.t: I ;"""r h" " , to place themselves under their charge, tea, mu iuuuuu tuguucuuiug ucgivca - l.,,, ,1,. : V. nd the7 were-wrought to the c,t7 ,n tha - mnnn .nri n .refi Kfir, nrft .tiart-r " " r " " and out of harms way. Ths severest wounds were inflicted upon the whites as tbey attempted to ascend the staps of the house, and were deilt by a butchers cleaver. These sad vents will drive the negroes from their o'd homes, as their longer residence in the bottom will hardly be tolerated by the people who have been so terribly excited .against them. Bia Salary. Mr. Moran accented the Presidency of the Erie Itoad to which 1 ' he was elected on Saturday. The salary was fixed, as we have before stated, at $25,000 per annum, tho highest salary, we think, paid by any corporation in this country. The stock of tbe road has adanced since the election from $20 to $33 per ghare, which evinces the public confidence in. tbe selection. 07" A new candidate for fame and im-1 mortality as a sculptor, by th name of Barbee. formerly a lawyer of Vinrinia. is '. - putting forth claims fop admiration.
