THE LATEST INTELLIGENCE. TELEGRAPHED EXCLUSIVELY ' 1 TO TUB EVANSVILL.K DAILY JO ÜRNAL Washington Items. Washington, June 5 It is ttntrne that Lord Kapier has officially denied the cession of the Bar Island in the Bar of ran am a to Great Britain. The administration certainly did not inter??(?ata him, nor did ha rolnnteer a statement npen the subject. Jf o one, however, in diplomatic or government circle believes that Buch twion has ben made. I. N. Knapp to-day resigned the lucrative office of aent of the C. S. Treasury, intending to move to Wisconsin to eng ajre in Bankin?, Heal Estate and Law business. Col. Cummin?, although declining the Governorship of Utah u hen in Missouri, would probably have accepted it upon his arrival here, had not the President in the meantime selected another, whose name will be officially concealed until it shall be known whether he will accept the appointment. Upon this being ascertained affirmatively, two new Judges for Utah, to fill vacancies, AnI a Marshal and Superintendent of Indian Affairs, will be appointed. General Cheatham, of Tennessee, an officer in tha Mexican war, has been appointed Connl to Atpinwall. From New York. Niw York, Jane 5. A correspondence between three American firms at Canton, Commodore Armstrong, and Minister Parker, is published in tbo Post. The former asked the Commodore to protect a local steamer, bearing the American flag, and alluding to the recent capture of two English steamers by the Chinese. The Commodore replied that the force at his disposal would not permit him. The firms forwarded the correspondence to Par- . leer with a protest against the Commodore's action, and with the request that the matter be communicated to the Government at Washington. Parker acceded. From Boaton. Boston, Friday, June 5. Ex-Governor Henry Hubbard, of New Hampshire, died at Charleston this morning. The Concord Legislature elected Lemuel N. Pattee, Republican, Secretary of State. The electinn lor other State officers has been postponed. Gen. Walker. The steamer Woodford, with Gen. Walker and staff on board, passcd this point yesterday morning about nine o'clock. A large crowd of citizens were on the wharf awaiting his arrival. Gen. Walker, in compliance with a general request, addressed the crowd from the balcony of the Pavilion Hotel. He was introduced by Col. Drew. His remarks were in substance the same as those made in Memphis and New Orleans. He said that tho war in Central America was only suspended nd would be resumed and carried on succeas fully, no alluded to the kind manner in which he had been greeted on his trip up tho river, and felt assured that the sy mpathies of the American people were with him and has cau?o. He appealed to Americans for as- . eistance in regenerating and Americanizing Nicaragua. His remarks were listened to with profound attention. In person, Gen. Walker is about five feet 'feet four inches high, and has none of the "Indicatives of a hero; he is slight in figure with no strong marks of intellect, and has ' ncithei an active physical or mental temperament. On looking at him it was almost impossible to believe that he was tho hero of o many desperate engagements in Nicaragua. At the close of his speech an attempt to raise three cheers for the horo was very ' feebly responded to. The enthusiasm in favor of tho cause has never been es great upon this side of the river as in Kentucky. We have had no sens or brothers in the war to warmly enlist our feelings. On Saturday evening before Walker's departure from New Orleans, the citizens held a Nicaragua meeting which bronght together the largest crowd that has been assembled in New Orloans in many years. Walker's speech in which he defended his measures in Nicaragua, and proclaimed his unyielding resolution to re sum 9 the contest and establish American supremacy on the Isthmus was received With enthnsiastio responses. It is evident tho cause has tho sympathies of the -multitude. The St. LnU Rail Road Celebration. The excurbionista to the St. Louis celobra tion have returned, eloquent in their descrip tions of the pleasures of the trip the hrilliancy of the scenes in the grand parade, and of the kind, unbounded hospitality of tho cit izens. The viitors were all cared for as pri vate guests from their arrival till their de parture. On reaching Illinoistown, foor magnificent steamers received them onboard, and gave them a bountiful breakfast, "while taking them on a hört morning excursion up and down tho river for some distance above and below the city. A procession was formed of military and citizens of several miles in length, wid marched to the fair grounds where a pavillion had been erected the most spacious of any thing of the kind in the Un ion, capable of accommodating ten thousand persons which received the vast throng withcn its walls. The lion. Edward Bates ad Pressed the multitude in an oration oi an 'honr'a length, stirring the hearts of all who ."leard him, with new impulses of patriotism. At the close, the concourse repaired to bountiful tables, covered with ample provisions for .II. Each State was toasted in turn, to which the representatives of each responded, which 'brought out . a series of eloquent and aparkingly addresses, and made a happy finale to tho day. The visitors were entertained at the expense of the city while they remained, and .all left with tho most cordial good will for the ity, which, prosperous and great as she is, merits all ner gooa lortune, for the enterprise,. liberality and publio spirit of her citi zens. - , r tt" - 1 - - i3j -uessrs. numsey neison nave a Aar; sale of fine Liquors this morning at 10 o'clock.
