The Dank Investigation. It is becoming qai:j evuleut that tin fa
Tnoua inquisition' is not to result so mnch
in -revealing how the charter was obtained
a in disclosin-f tba bitter feud that exist
between two factions of tho same rsrtv.
Though tho designs of the Committed may be to get at the facts, thVtestlmonj has lit tle reference to the validity of the charter, but proves the corruption' of both parties in the quarrel." It is no longer a war against the Bant :whLh is likelv to pass unscathed hol a war of the roses between the Wright and Bright factions. If it should terminate in the disappearance of all but the two tails of the comhattants, tho people might be more permanently benefitted by the fight, that has ensued, than they have been in securing a good Bank.; The "controversy ha developed tho very flattering opinions entertained by each clique of it rival fiction. There are some mfst extraordinary contradictions in the testimony, and if the cornnJssion be not an extra judicial body and not legally authored to administer oaths, there are foundations for nu morons suits for perjury. Mr. McMarry, n representative from'Pntfiam, as we reported a fw days since,' testi fied that on the passage of the Bank bill to be engrossed in tho House, he voted in the negative, but his vote was recorded in the eßrmatite, end stood so u pen the Journals cf the House; and it was upon this false record the bill was passed on its third reading This statement is most signally and conclu sively refuted by unimpeachable testimony Mr. Gregg, editor of tha New Albany Trihune, a most impartial witness allied ' to neither party a gentleman whoso testimony carries a moral weight, that no party or per aonal prejudices can resist, says in the fol lowing paragraph,' this statement is false: " 14 Now we have no doubt that Mr. McXIurray is a very honorable man, and means to Uil tho truth. Isat we nave gooj reason to know that he is mistaken in eupposin that he voted against the State Bank bill on it ; passage before the veto. ."When that vote taken tve were within the bar of tha Uouso, and in a position where wo could distinctly hear the response of every, member to tho roll call of the clerk. We had before u v ono of the printed tally papers of tho House, " and tallied each man's vote a it was given ' at the time. Whan the vote was taken on thj passage- of tin bill after tb5 Governor's eto, we again recorded the ayes and noes upon tho same tally paper, noting particiliarly the variance in the two votes. -. This same tally paper wo have now before ns, and on comparing it. with the House journal, wo ' find that it agrees with it perfectly. When thsbill first passed. Mr. McMnrray voted - "Aye;1 when it passed after, the veto, he vo- J , ted "Xo.n On both occasions there were 51 I " Ayes. With regard to these facts. It is scan-e-It possible we should bo mistaken. Mr. M. may have intendod to vote Yb in the first instance, as he did in the last, but he certainly did vote 4M." The number of votes on tho passage of the bill to be engrossed, and on its final passage in opposition, to the veto, was the same a constitutional majority of 51. Bnt ' there were eighteen members who changed their rotes, in the interim, for and against the bill. , If there were fraud practiced this fact would indicate that it was nsJ on both sides as there were as many changed one way as the .."other. Major Morrison, formerly cdixr of the State Sentinel, and now a banker in Indianv apolis, testified that $12)0 had been paid Mr . Walpole, representative from Hancock, as a bribe to withdraw his opposition to tho Bank bill, and that the mouey was paid through . Mr. Talbot, present Postmaster of Ir.dLanap- .' ' lis, who told Morrison tho ob'ect of the apr- propriation, and observed to him that Walrolo was to bo well paid for his treason. On examining the records, it appears that . Wal pole never ceased in his opposition to the bill; t voted ajainst it on every question, and -finally gave his vote to sustain the veto; and i hia fellow, member testify that he was nn ceasing and pertinacious in his opposition, both in the House and in all the caicne and private meetings for the consideration of the Bank charter. ' He makes a most triumph aa vindication of birasolf from the churj es " T of Major Morrison. Thus the only testimo ny affecting the validity of tho charter has been pretty effectually destroyed; and the rebound of the blow at the Bank has knock ed its authors down. The war is now turned into Africa. ' Gov Wright's integrity and disinterestedness is impcachod. Mr. Bnsson, cashier of the Muncictown Bank, who was before the coin :. mittcc this week, testified that Mr. Hunt, a capitalist and Banker in Charleston, Indiana, and a brother-in-law of Gov. W right, told him, duriuff tho peuuency of tho Bank bill before the Legislature, that if the Fletcher Bank bill could be passed that he would make $20,000, and that tho Governor would share in the transaction; that the Governor would veto the present charter and defeat it, . and give them a chance to pash the Fletcher bill through: Tho Governor indignantly de nied the truth of this insinuation before the committee and Mr. Bcrscn desired that Mr
- Hunt might be subpeeaned and examined on
this point. We report the testimony as re lated by thoso who heard it. . 157" Onr Army on the.Plains are to be fed ' this season with the concentrated substance of vegetables and meats prepared by the eminent French chemists, Chollin & Co.,of Paris. The preparation Is the same cs that adopted, by' tho French and Sardinian Armies, and is prepared for use in the form of Soups. Tho cost at which it is to be de livered at our Army depots on the Atlantic will be about one and a half cents per ra tion. It is said that a cubio yard of tlio pre paration U sufficient to make a plate of ex cellent, most palatable and nutritious soup for an army of 23,000 men! As the preparation , is now no experiment, having for a cons'derable time been in use in tho armies and na vies of Europe, its introduction into the mil itary service of the United States is to prove a great economy, if but in the way of the cost of transportation on the Plams, as wcl ' as an improvement in the style of tho American service ration. f37"Onr exchanges all speak in glowing terms of the prospects of the growing crops. The late rains and sunshine have given rye, oats, corn and wheat a new start, - and the croakers about "short crops," are silenced. The correspondents of the Cincinnati '.Price Current report the wheat in Ohio in a splcn did condition. ' It is thought that the wheat . crop will be larger this year than any previous year, as a far greater breadth of land was sewa.
