, OCrTha following" touching nd felici
touA illostration of the power of ideas was giYen by Wendell Phillips the other day in a public speech at , Kew York. t The loquence . of Phillips is surpased by nothing ut his atrocious fanaticism: , ; It was told to-day a story so touching in reference to this that you must let me tell it. It is a texnuerance case, but it will illustrate this just as well. It is the tory of a mother," on the green hills of Vermont,"' holding by the right hand a son, sixteen years old, mad with lore of the sea. And, as she stood by tne gar den gate on a suny .morning, she said: Edward, they tellme-for I new saw tho ocean that the great temptation of the seaman's life is drink. Promiso me, bo fore you quit your mother's hand, that you win nerer arms;." Aim, saui no wt he told me the story), I gave her the promise, and I went the broad globe OYer -Calcutta tho "Mediterranean, can Francisco, the Cape of Good Hope, the North Pole and the SoulhI saw them all in forty years, and 1 never saw a glass tilled with .sparkling liquor mat my mother's form by the garden gate, on the ereen hillside of Vermont, did not rise beT ..... . tfore me; and to-aay,ai sixiy, my ups we innocent of the taste of liquor. Applaus) Was not that sweet evidence of the power of a sinirle word? Yet it was but half. For, said he, yesterday there came into mr countinr-room a younir man of forty, and asked me. "Do you know me?" "Na.; Well, said he, MI was once brought drunk into your presence on shipboad; . you were a passenger; the captain kicked me aside; you took me to your berth and' kept me there till I had slept off the intoxication; you then asked me if I had a mother;' I Said I never knew a word ' from her lips; you told me of yours at the garden gate, and to-day I am the master of one of the finest packets in New York, and I come to ask, you to call and see roe." How far that little candlo throws its beams That mother's word on the green hillside of Vermont Oh, God be thanked for the almighty power of a single word. Applause. '. . ... An Unconscious Journey by a Yocso Lady. A few days sines a young lady of respectable family in New York; who was attending a private school on Long Island, was seized with a violent toothache and went out to purchase some ether for relief. 'Under its intoxicating influence, as is supposed, she went on board one of the Sound steamers,' and was taken to Stonington, thence camo by railroad to Boston, and on the return of her ptoper senses, sue was amazeu to nna nerseii wandering' about the streets of Chelsea near Boiton. She im medial y, in great distress of mind, applied at the house or a hospitable citizen, and, after telling her story to the landlady, requested until she could write to and hear from her fatber. Trie worthy lady, confiding in the artles. innocence of her youth she' being about 15 years of age readily granted her request, and for the . nonce adoptel her as one of the family. This morning the poor girl was overjoyed at receiving a message from home, stating that her father was on the way to meet her. 'The case come to the knowlege of the police, through a reward offered for her recovery, but . which no officer.will claim. .It is a gratifying fact, to the credit of civilization, that a young lady of much personal beauty could take so long a journey, entirely without pro tection, and uuder such peculiarly remarkable circumstances, .without, the slightest harm befalling her. 'Boston Trunscript. Lady Politicians ix. England. In the recent Parliamentary election in Eng land, tho women seeni to hare been un usually actire. ' Lady John Kussel con tributed much to her husband's re-election by vioi ting the different polling booths with her smiles and courtesies among the electors. Lady Milfred Hone is believed to have carried the 'election of her husband for Maidstone. She did not exactly canvass for him, but allthrouga theelec tion she was constantly driving about the town;, she also was most active at the nomination and during the polling; and at the close, unable to restrain herself any lonirer, she threw up the windoW of her hot at. and a Mrewd the mob m a speech which every lly njrxeod was better than her huHhaml's, delivered immediately afterwards from tve same 'place.y'S OrThe Boston Transcript says that some 700 feet of the Hooaic tunnel on the Railroad between Boston and Albanl have been excavated s21 on tho eastern side of the mountain and 185 on the other. The progress made per day is about six feet. In the execution of the work, about one hundred workmen are employed on both sides of the Uoosic. One year and four months have already been Spent in the operation, and as the cost is $60 per lineal foot, some $42.000 have been laid out in the process of boring. It will take quite a lapse of time to completo the distance through the Hoosic 24,000 feet at the rate of six feet per diem. (ETThe State of Michigan has established a Collego of Acriculture, on a farm of seven hundred fertile acres, near the city of Lansing, where the State Capitol is located. It has an endowment of $56, 000, the precoeds of the Salt Spring lands originally given ta Michigan Territory by the Federal Government. The Legislature has appropriated $20,000 per annum for two years to the support of the College. - ! - CT-The N. Y. Post says that one firm of dealers in Sugar in that city sent, some time since, an order for ten thomsand tons of Manilla Sugar, a part of which has already arrived. - The outly for this venture was about $900.000. and the oroflts are expected to exceed $250,000. Revolt of the Chinese Coolies.
Tue Horrors or the Coolie Trade. The Singapore Timos gives the parti culars of the revolt of the Coolies on board the Peruvian ship Carmen, and the Friend of China, on account of another revolt on the British ship G ulnare,: at tended witd a terrible loss of life. The captain 'first desired the powder in the shiptQ.be thrown overboard, and then tried to ex tinguish the .firo by closing, the , hatchways, but in vain; tho flames soon seized on every part of the ship, affording time only to get out two boats. The captain, officers and crew, number in all fourteen, with seven passengers having been , able to secure a few arms, but without water or provisions, quitted the burning 6hip in rhe boats. At this time some of the coo lies had forced the hatchways and were seen passing up the rigging, but the masts shortly afterwards fell over into the sea. Just as the boat, in which was tbe captain, had reached the vessel, the latter went down, and the boat must have been taken down with the sinking ship, as nothing was seen of tho captain or the people in the boat, althought the mate remained close by for' nearly four hours. The greater part of the coolies must have been suffocated by the smoke the whole perished except an Interpreter. On board of the G ulnare, the coolies made a similar assult upon its officers. The captain, officers and crew immcJia tely rushed out and rescued ' the third mate" and sentry, who were , seriously wounded, The. coo'ies fought with fear ful desperation, and in some instances were fairly cut to pieces before the were driven belOW; in fact, they returned th6 fir tir enmn fn minntos nrith hicma .v. u ..w .u. One pistol was fired up tho hatchway in the direction of the poop. Finding they could not resrain tne deck, the coolies broke up their berths and set the ship a ii . lire in tne mam, mizen, ana poop ana hatchways, but when the leaders in . the mcendiinsm were shotdown, they im mediately extinguished the fires. The third mate and the sentry were tho only two of the crew who wero scrrously wounded. Twenty-seven coo lies were killed and wounded ten kil led, three drowned, and fourteen wound ed. Some have aince jumped overboard. Slavery. "Not a single instance can be produced of a really savage people which has become civilized of its own ac cord, and that, where civilization has been forced upon such a people from without physical decay of the race has ensued; as in the case of the Zsatttckn, the Guaranis, the missions in New California, and those of the Cape.
