The clerk awaited the gentleman's return for some time, with the purse lying where he cast it in his excitement. Xo fear of trickery was entertained, as the purse evidently con

tained money amounting to twice the value of T the bracelet- But when hour after hour pass- ' ed without the gentleman's return, and it was found that the purse contained brass medals, the size of half eagles, the clerk and his master came to the conclusion that their customer was a slippery one, and his innocent looking boy wa3 not being brought up in the way - he should go. . 07" Commodore Vanderbilt is about to es. tablish a line of packets from New York to

Havre via Southampton with his two steamvships the Ariel and the Vanderbilt; the latter ' is one of the largest steamships afloat. CT A rery light mulatto fellow ran away fro tu his master in Nashville, and took a Wack fellow slave with him, and succeeded in parsing himself as a white man accompanied by his servant. In the cars and at the hotels onhis way to Alabama, he mingled with the 'gentlemen as one of them. Being recognized by a gentleman from Nashville, at Chattanooga, an attempt was made to arrest hitn, when he drew a knife and plunged it into his own breast and died upon the spot. His black companion was taken. Malignant Mcrbaix. In 1715 a most malignant disease prevailed among cattle on the continent of Europe, and was introduced Jnto England by imported cattle from Holland. .It was very fatal, and in the second year after its introduction over 40,000 cattle died in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire and almost as many more in Cheshire. During the third year remuneration was given by the government, who bad ordered the destruction -of diseased cattle, for no fewer than 80,000 head, while twice as many more, according to the report of one of the commissioners, died or tne.maladv. in tne lourtn rear it was equally fatal, nor does it appear to have com pletely disappeared till eight years after. A similar disease is now raxing among cat tle in the central portions of Europe Poland .and Eastern Prussia, and it has reached Konegsberg, where ono proprietor lost 300 ! head in one night. Strong apprehensions are felt that it will continue to spread West, and again invade England; it is recommended that the 'government prohibit the importation of -cattle as a precautionary measure. And it might bo well for our government to adopt . some provisions of safety, should it extend to England. Basket Willow. The Dayton (Ohio) .Journal says: The cnltivation of the basketwillow, large quantities of which are imported by the manufacturers of willow ware in this couutry, is attracting the attention of -farmers in Ohio. II. B. Well man, of Masil.lon has recently brought from Vermont, 400,000 cuttings ef the willow; theso cuttings will plant twenty five acres. Mr. W. intends to devote one hundred and fifty acres to the . cultivation of the willow, and is confident that, at present prices, ho will net three . hundred dollars per acra by the operation. The Wabash and Ohio bottoms and banks will grow any amount of this valuable material, and wherever they are planted, they will prove a complete protection against the banks. A Noble Deed. The Terre Haute Express of Saturday says: Yesterday afternoon, .as the train on the Evansville and Crawfordsville Railroad, was starting and had got ua.der considerable headway, a child was discovered on the track, only a short distance ahead .of the locomotive. The engineer immediately gave the signal and reversed his engine. The firemen, Mr. Charles Miller, seeing that the train could not bo stopped in time, sprang through the look-out, or the window of the engine, ran along, until he came to the forward end, jumped olf, and snatched the child fromthe track, just in time to save it jrom Demg crusneu, as tne locomotive was within five feet of him when he saved the child. The deed manifested true bravery, and convinced those that witnessed it, thai Charley Miller, possesses a kind heart. May he nevwtr be called upon again to act his part in a deed of this nature one that displayed true heroism. The Richest Community im the World. Lo! the Poor Indians! A day or two since we had occasion to mention that the result of the late sale of th Delaware (f ndians) trust landj was glTO.OOO. Tha lands sold were only those comprised in the Eastern division of this great reservation. The Western division is now advertised to be sold. That contains some 350,000 acres, and will undoubtedly bring an aggregate of at least 6 GOO, 'XX). The tribe are also the owners of a home reservatien almost iumediately adjoining Leavenvortli City, forty miles by ten broad. Ähat woula sell to-morrow readily for $10 nsr acre; or an aggregate of $3,000,000. lilias their total wealth, independent of per-

f 3 of considerable individual means is about $5,070,000. They number in all some nine hundred souls; and, from the real estate described above, are worth on an average of $4,410. This being the case is it supprising that so many men die in these days with delirum tremens? 07 Mr. Guthrie, late Secretary of the Treasury, reports that whib in office he brought no less than twelve hundred suits against Government defaulters, whose aggre gate defalcation amounted toorer six millions of dollars.
