ails. 0iirnal. P. Y. CARL1LE, EDITOS. C. K. DREff, JtM LOCAL KP1TOK. 'EVANSVILLE: MONDAY MOHN ING,::::-::::::::MAKCH 30 CrThernineral wealth of Southern In ditna is daily being developed. It is strange that the Stato should, in these days of enterprise and knowledge, have a LcgMature with o little appreciation of their value as to refuse to expend $10,000 for a geological surrey of the State. It is enough To raise a blush upon, the cheek of every inhabitant. At Dover Hill, in Martin county, marble has been found, capable of tfc$ highest polish, and of the Tery; finest grain. The specimens are of a dark hue, shaded with veins of a light color. In the same vicinity mineral paints of the finest quality have been discovered, embracing cinnamon, ochre, yellow cchre, light red ochre, dark Venetian red, and of other colors. They have been tested by competent judges, and found 10 mix well with oil, and to nfake excellent paints. Measures will soon be taken to manufacture theso ores and bring them Into market. These discoveries are all within two and three miles of the Ohio and t Mississippi railroad, and not far f:om the Straight Line road. It n said that Urge or ders for these paints have been given by Louses in Cincinnati. Iron is found everywhere in the same neigh borhood, and preparations arc making to establish furnaces. . In Terry county, specimens of lead ore have been discovered, in Deer Creek township, near the Ohio river. . The specimens have been analysed, and found to be of very rich quality. The analysis gave sulphate of lead 'J3 per cent, 3.0 sulphate of iron, and 3.2 sulphate of zinc. The per ccntage of metallic lead would bo 81 per -cent. There has been a tradition handed down; by the early settlor., that the Indians' were in the habit of resorting to that neighborhood for lead for their rilb balls. The Owensvil. and Grayville Railroad. A friend writes us that the meeting at Grayville on Monday last, to take into consideration the construction of a railroad from Grayville through Owensville to the E. & O road near Mclntires station, ,was very largo and , enthusiastic. Our correspondent, who was a member of the delegation from OsvenäTille to tho Grayvillo meeting, says: j "The proposition ,for a union of the efforts of the two places to construct the road was yery cordially received; an! although ' the project was just branched in a meeting of the stocholders of tha Owensville road, at Owensville, only a few days previous, and notwithstanding but two days' notico of the scheme was given to the people of Grayville, the' meeting to receivo us was very large; and I never saw a greater demonstration of the spirit of public enterprise, than was there manifested. They unanimously pledged themselves to secure a subscription from 35,000 to $40,000 at once, We shall have a meeting of our citizens at Owensville on Saturday 28th instant; and another meeting will be held at Grayrille on the 4th of April, at which a delegation from Owensvillo will attend; ' when wo shall learn the amount of their subscriptions at Gray Tille, and some steps for a permanent organization will be adopted. You may assure your readers that th'.s road will 1 built,' and "no mistake.' We feel well satisfied from t Ao spirit mjtnifrsUiCthat wclcan get local subscription enough V grade the road tho entire length' of 22 miles, and lay the cross-tici, before the day appoints! for tho general organization, iho grade will be ex ceedingly light and ought not to cost more than C.OpO or $7,000 per mile, and S120,000 or S10,000 ought to cover tho cost of the earth worir. If the, citizens of Gravville will do their share, we are confident we can pro cure the balance. Evansville must provide the means and credit to get the Iron, and the E. & C. Railroad must furnish the roll in stock. The importance to Evansville of a railroad into Southern Illinois cannot be over estimated; and one through this rich region of Gibson county to Grayvillo is the tast you can get If lha people or hvansvilla are not dead to all the impulses of a wise and gener ous public spirit; or if tbey bo not heedless of their own self-interest, they will come for ward and encourage us, an4 sustain us by a liberal support. Wo rely upon the Journal to do its' duty, and to present tho claims of this road to the support of tha city in its usu al clear and forcible manner." We can say no more, and in no better man ner than our correspondent has himself pre sen ted the subject. Our business men, we know, regard this road as of great importance to the maintenance and extension of our d t xnestic trade. It appeals to tha interests of very dealer in the citj, whether laTge or small in the extent of his business; it will pass through a region from which we derive our best and largest amount of "country trade," and we do not doubt but a very largo individual subscription can be obtained for the road among our merchants, after the people alonj: the line shall havo shown how much they are willing to do, by taking freely o tho stock. We hope that some of our pub lic spirited citizens, particularly those interest ed in the E. & C. Koad, will attend the meet ing at Grayville, on the 4th of April. Their presence would encourage and aid tha enter(rThe Tostmaster at Effingham, Illinois, and a mail carrier, in the same neighborhood have been arrested for robbing tho mails. They both hail sustained good characters. Tho Postmaster was also an editor and a a man of intelligence. ft-Th Illinois Contral lUilroad Company has issued eighty-five thousand shares cr new tock eoual toeignianda hair millions of dollar. Th total capital stock of the road Is row twenty-five millions of dollar?.
A Road from GosroRT to Indianapolis. A correspondent of the State Sentinel, states a fact that appears not to bo generally known, and which is of some interest to our citr, and
which may have an important influence upon tho interests or tac airaigm L.ine iauroad. He ays that a branch of the Kew Albany and Salem lUilroad was graded three years ago, from Gosport, via Moorcsville, to within twelve miles of Indianapolis, and was abandoned two jcars since, oa account of the pecuniary embarrassments of those who had undertaken it. The citizens on the line are now desirous or resuming tho wopk, and a ; limited amount of capital only is required to finish the grading. The writer says the line runs through one of tha richest agricultural districts in the State, and it would open to In dianapolis one of the finest and most exten sive stone quarries in Indiana. The citizens of Indianapolis are appealed to for their own interests to aid in tho completion of this un. finiahed work. Gosport is on tho route of the Straight Line Railroad; and the third division of that road is from Gosport to Indianapolis, a dis tance of 45 miles. If the people along the line and the citizens of Indianapolis should ba induced, according to this writer's sugge; tions, to complete the now unfinished road from Gosport to tho capital, it might super scede the construction of the third division, or last section of the Straight Lino Road; and if Mr. Carpenter shall succeed in completing tha first division of which there is now lit tie doubt it would give us the strongest as surances that tho whole road wvuld ultimate ly be carried through. 07" A young man about 13 years of ago, belonging to a highly resdectable family, and who had been universally respected lor his amiable disposition and many supposed Virtues, and who had loon cmpleycd as a deputy clerk of the count)', war, arrested at Ply mouth, in Marshal county, in this State last week, charged with robbing tho Post-otncs Ie had hecn watched for several weeus by those whoe" suspicions had been awakens 1, and ha wus not arrested till certain facts seemed to fix the crime upon him. Tha dis closures caused great astonishment and gne n the community where he had long resided and been universally respected. fjT" Wo learn that tho Henderson and Kashville railroad will not kacrilico more than $8,0X) or $10,000 in recovering their bonds which they supposed, at one time, had been misappropriated by their ogent in London. Their escape from a heavy Ios.s and much per plexity has been most fortunate. (t7"Wcare informed there are gentlemen n town investigating tho advantaged of our ocality for a rolling mill and nail factory. We aro told thev think our coal well iitted or the purposes of iron manufactuie. e 07" Tha contract for grading one-half of tho railroad from Vinccnnes to Paris, in Ed gar county, Illinois, has been let out to resident contractors, fanners. and others along the line, who take a good portion of their av in the steck of the road. Ihe work u going ahead, and it is said will bo completed beforo next winter. It pa.e3 through tho richest portions of tho Wabash valley, on the Wet side of the river, and nearly parallel to t. The work has been undertaken without much gassing or discussion, and although it las attrae'ed but little attention among our citizens, it will bo an important tributary to tho L. & C. Koad, and to tho trade of our city. 05" The navy appropriation act of tho re cent session aulliori7.es au increase of tho personnel of thOvy from $i,500 to $c0U. C7 A private secretary to tho President was provided for by the late Congress, at a salary of ttventy-fivo hundred dollars. Hitherto this important and indispensable oliieer has been paid by tho 1 resident out of Jus own pocket. A secretary to sign the President's name to land patents, receives a salary of fifteen hundred dollars a year. This small functionary has his office in the White House, usually, and of course holds confidential relations with tho President, but the executive secretary is unknown to the law, and no Conressional provision has heretoiurj been made lor his compensation. fcj-Mr. John M. Caldwell has been ap pointed Postmaster of Vincenncs; his commission to .dato from 20th April. Mr. C. has been for a number of years, an cmploveo in the Postollice Department at Washington. C7"The contract for Building the new postoluce and court-rooms at Indianapolis, has been awarded to William II. Thomas, of Washington City for $03,933, that being the lowest bid. We regret that no lloosicr archi tect could bo found to take the job. Destructive Fire. Tho town of Plymouth, in Marshal county, in this Stato was visited with a severe calamity by tiro on the 22d inst. The fire began about ono o'clock on Sunday morning, and was first seen on tho outside of a large brick block in tho central part of the town on tho principal business street, from which it spread with un par ailed rapidity in all directions; in less than an hour the whole square was in rains, embracing the principal business houses of tho town. The loss is estimated at more than $100,000. Tho office of the Republican newspaper was destroyed, and the paper is temporarily suspended. Few of the su&rvr J were insured, and many of ih m are ruined by tho calamity. It is supposed the lire was the act of incendiaries, who were instigated by the hopa of plunder, which was perpetrated to a largo amount during tho confusion and consternation of the sceno. fjT-Thc Hon. As tho summer approaches we advise every one who would to rid of the above named pests, to send and procure a time ly supply of the Jjclerminator.
