The Pari: press has a significant article upon the relations of this country toCuba, containing views which we suppose have the sanction jf the French Government. It says: "Englami and France would certainly never consent to the annexation of Cuba to the great North American confederation. Cuba is, in fact, tha key of the Gulf of Mexico, as Constantinople is the key of the Black Sea, and Europe can no more admit that tha Gulf of . Mexico should become a Yankee lake than allow the Black Sea to become a Unssian lake. For the very reason that England and France deem it so important to prevent our . acquisition of the Island, it is of the first political and commercial consequence to us to get . the dominion of it. If it be the key to the Gulf, it is the key to the outlet of the Mississippi, which is the great highway of the commcrce of more than half of our whole popnla- . tion. Can we safely consent that any power . shall hold the command of one of the ch'ef avenues of domestic as well as foreign com - , merce? The law of necessity for self-preser-vvuon woum warrant almost, in seizing it u we could not get it otherwise?. Forfte Evaasvillo Joaraal. The . I. & C. 3. L. E. S. I know too, who wrote tho very silly anonymous letter in fto Enquirer of the 13th, but in charity will not name bin. I ask no faro-sof anyone, ut for your takes, hare aright to demand answer to my facts and arguments. The loss of about two hundred and forty out of a three huudred and sixty tbou:tnU ca;h aubscriptiona la one year is notaltudiitg fact, but Mr. Carpenter tries to smother np and not account for it. 11c ays that the Sndand 3n l Ulrisious are not more cxpenf ire per mile than the 1st and therefore that allegation Is not tree. 1 hare In ray possession what I think good evidence ot tha troth of that allegation, bot if 1 am in error there then their contract is by so much the more cuconscicn Mein Us exhorbitant price. But my main facts and arguments are wholly nn- ' touched. These charges a;ainat Mr, Kole and the American Railroad Journal, may be true or false; but ll It be here understood onco for all, that any charge against me, made or to be made, charging me Ith connivance or complicity with n.y party or Inter est to array one Kvansvilie railroad ;jru!nst another is utterly false. That a chao azaitst ue, that 1 am op posed to the progress and eoiopletioa of the Straight Lina Railroad is utterly fa 9, That any charge that I have any Interest opposed to the completion of that road Is utterly false. With fur coal mines now open on the Ohio, wihin 1 miles; one ou the Canal within SO, and several within sixty miles, with not one good vein of coal, but several under every acre iu aid anund Evansvllle, and a certainty cf their bcinjj open e I in erety direction as soon as the demand willjunl fy it. It Is a sheer absurdity even If my charaeter would warrant the stand jr. to ay that my coal inter- - e .t makes me hoslilj to this roa I. As to my inscrest in the E. &. C. II. I:., that is a mere trifle. I spend more in money, labor audt hne, every year of iny life for the public Interests of Eransvllle, than all my stock in that road is worth. It is that :ny lot and that of an extended family con nnxion, anl of sereral he!p!es ones to whom and wh uj fort inei t'nir cho.ee and the law have made raj pr.eator, are east hre in Kransrilte, and taat we are all vitally Jlatares'ed in the prudvt t managemcn of oar eity government, as well as of ail our putl e works. It Is t this, and this alone, that my appear äse now bef the public Is attributable. And the same spirit which made me, regardless of private per aonal wrongs, stand by the E. & C. R. It , till I saw It safe for eoindeliou, now, perhaps at tho eleventh hour. Impels me to breast all opposition to arrest the mad and fatal pulley su fast destroying this new enter prise. Of the other trifies In Mr.Carpei.ter's letter, I will take notice at the proper time and place I now without boasting or presumption, but feeling that backed Ky troth, I am equal to the emergency, that ' the weakness of the advocate will be compensated by the strength of his cause, publicly call oneilher O II.
