M13IATUKB ALMAXAC: Rist 6 Kau Fit 5 40 ; The Ljbbary Association. Hamilton Smith, Esq., of Cancelton, lectures before the Libmrj Association, to-morrow erening. We call the attention of those interested, to the fact, thit season tickets are not transferable. Heretofore, the Association has been imposed npon, bjr hiring season tickets "passed round." To-morrow erening, tickets will be examined at tho door. The lecture will begin at 7 o'clock, and it is expected that the audience will be assembled by that time. ' . (r Mr. Wm. Comnt has receired at the Oyster Depot," on Main street, a fine lot of Baltimore oysters, fresh and nice. These are the first since the freeze up, and will be found of excellent quality. Cr Now is jast the timo to transplant trees and jhrubbery. We cannot too strongly nrje uponjour citizens the importance of beautifying the city. A little trouble now, in planting trees along the sidewalks and in gar decs will add much to the appearance of the place and the comfort of all parties. There Is no reason why Evansville' should not be a "Forest city," as well as Cltieland. All around us we hive forest trees which can be transplanted at this season with little trouble - and expense. We are glad to know that the ' City Council has determined to adorn the public school grounds with shado trees they will add fifty per cent to the value and appearance; of that property. Oyster Item. Messrs. Z. II. Cook & Son, hare 6oId at retail hi nee the beginning of the season. $2,28 1 worth of oysters. Some estimate miy be mla from this item of the peculiar fondness for the bivalves, we EvansTillians hare. For the p-.t month, no oyster hare been received in the city. Had the cat on been as propitious as usual, Messrs. Ccok Sc Son's Oyster sales for the season would hare reached $3500. The weather having moderated, the usual supplies for the west will be forwarded immediately: 07" It is feared by many of the wheat growers in this vicinity that the severity of the winter has operated unfavorably on the wheat crop; in the large wheat raising regions of northern Illinois the crop is killed ia many fljlds, aid in others, bailly damaged. Farmers in that locality do not anticipate more than half a crop. Attempted Saictde. "One mortui fortnnat nenry of trfMh." We are informed that an individual in Latnasco, undertook to afford us an interesting local item on Friday last, by choking the "vital spark of heavenly flame," out of his mortal coil. The rope was adjusted and matters were going on swimmingly, when the man's better half interfered, cut him down and rescued him from a suicide's death. C"We were visited yesterday with the first thunder storm of the season. The river men were all completely soaked while cover Ing their freight on the levee. Qr To-day, we publish tho Weekly Journal containing its usual quantity of reading mat ter. Copies in wrappers can be obtained at our counting room. CtT" Advertisers will confer a favur upon us by handing fi their favors as early in the day as possible. Or Whitewashes and house-cleaners will find at llallock & Stoddard's a variety of Whitewash brushes, which they are selling at reduced prices. Also, an assortment of scrub brushes and dusters. It. (ttr Tho river was falling at this point yesterday and is falling generally from l'itt.shurg to the month. There is, however a good boati ing stage of water in the river. 07" We invite public attention to the new : advertisements of Z. II. Cook & Son. . They vr receiving their Spring Stock of goods in J all their varieties. The Messrs. Cook's old 'Customers need not be advised where to go to .get their supplies. They all know that if Cook tan't fill their bill, there's no use looking fur ther. We commend the country trade gen erally to this ' house for fair bargains and ac commodxting terms. Tittsdcdo Coal. Andy Hutchinson has last received a mammoth boat-load of coal from tho Yoaghiogheny mines, a highly pre :ferable article for Found enes and Smiths' work. It will be at the lower wharf in the ! morning ready for delivery. The coal has been selected with especial reference to the abore uses, and everybody knows that Andy is a judge of the article. 0 The destruction of property by the late freshet in the Hudson river turns out much ereater than was at first auticipated: more than 100 acres of stores, business houses and dwelling were inundated to the rr, and in some instances to the second floor. The property in the cellars auCered immense damage. The loss of the canal property alone is estimated at b-oO,000 in and about the basine. The principal loss consists in damajed and lost goods and produce. mmm a 1IRKIBLE ACCIHST. A WO WCtkS f.gO, ai five men four black and one white were be ing let down in. a coal pit in Chcstcr(iel eounty, Va the cage which contained tlio men became detached from the ropo by which i was suspended, and was precipitated a distance or three hundred feet, killing all five of the men. She is lying in about ten feet water, and it is thought sh ecan be raised when the river recedes. She is valued at $8,000, and belongs to tho Cincinnati and Maysville Packet Company. fc"7- The swift and beautiful picket North erner was here yesterday en route for Mem phis. Mr. Archer remembered the Journal ofHcQ as usual. frr We are indebted to the Xcw Orleans packet Eclipse for Southern papers of the 11th. The Eclipse will run between New Orleans and Louisville during the season. ftirThe piles of drift along the levee should be speedily removed. They are a serious incon venience to boats landing. Tis largest T7harf Eoat on the Weitem wa ten, capatla of storieg two thousand Ilhdi. of Tobacco and every other kind of freight in proportion. Messrs. Howard & Brown having sold their wharf boat "llurcules," to the Ohio and Mo bile railroad company, terminating at Kentucky City, design building another, which when completed, will certainly bo a Uiaginficent one. Her extreme length is to be 323 feet; width 73 feet; depth of hold 4; feet. I he boat u to bo beautifully illuminated withers, with a revolving chandelier to be el evated some fifty feet above the roof of the boat, which will certainly make a very hand some appearance from the river and will 1 of great service to steam boatmen on dark nights in coming along side of the wharf boat. Arrangements are leing made by them for an engine to be used for hoisting and lower ing freicht into and out of her hold, sparing out. and tlirowin a tremendous stream ot water to tha top of tho highest buildings on Water street. We understand that a Telegraph office is to bo established on board tho boat by the Evansville and Wabash Telegraph Company. Of course stcsmboatmcn and passengers on stciraer3 will la glad to speak and converse with their friends all over the whole United Slates. They will have a gentleman of fine address dressed in livery, whose solo occupation shall be to inform passengers on steamers and citizens in the City in regard to expected steamers, arrivals and departures of trams, letters rjC3ivel -tVc. Iarge handbills will be printed in Louisville, Cincinnati, New Orleans, St. Louis, Bowling Green &c, informing travelers of the particular costume to be worn by this gentleman. We understand that the entiro cost of the b-at and fixtures will not fall much short of $40000. If any concern can make so magnificient and expensive a boat pay, Messrs. Howard & Crown can do it, as they are always on hand, and their business is very large and constantlv increasing. iiurc Indiakapous, Feb. 13. THE AHEEICAN CONVENTION. The assemblage was not vcrr numerous. but embraced a good deal of substantial weight and character; some of tho unpurchasable stuff was ir. the market. The Convention was treated with great courtesy by both Houses of the Legislature, the Representatives giving up their Hull in the afternoon and the Senate adjourned that their members might attend ho meeting. A preliminary meeting of the Convention was held in the Supreme Court Room, for organizaton and consultation The conclusion of the conference wa3 to seek no alliances with either of tho other parties to stand firmly upon the fundamental princi pies of the party to keep aloof from all minor issues, and leave a wide latitude for the exer eise of individual opinions on all minor topics. All secret organization was dispensed with, and all religious or sectarian proscription discarded. The most important present purpose for which tho party should labor, is to obtain an amendment of our State Constitution to confine the right of suffrage to citizens of the United States by birth, and a regular course of naturalization. From the Court room tho Convention ad journed to tho Hall of tho House of Represen tatives, where tho Hon. Richard W.Thompson addressed them in a speech nearly two hours in length, in an out-pouring of his most pow erfulanl electrifying eloquence; it was one o his happiest efforts. In the evening the com mitteo reported resolutions embodying the leading views of the party, which were sustained in a strong and sensible speech from Mr. Gregg, of the New Albany Tribune. 50 l.OXKS StarCfadir; dj Teltow de: S bx Pernor: SbxAUiet . 500 Ua CloTc. rto'daad far aalo y a VOX ES Tolar9. all btu traad; iaJ.Vida Haathi'rCh'('ft.: to bbla at .
