7. Y. CABLILE, EDITOR. C. K. PKEW, Jt., LOCAL EDITOR. EVANS VILLE: THURSDAY MORNIO.::::n:::::FEB. 19 First. Paqä: Poetry and miscellaneous iUms. Condition of Walker. The accountJ from Walker, continue to be as contradictory as the predictions of pirtizan papers on the ere of an election. With the best light we can get on the matter, it seems to us that he is losing ground, and we can see no good reason why the people in the United States should be the least sorry for it. It is probable that, at one time the adren turer had the sympathies of the people whose interests and wellfare he professedly espoused' and that his rule was as acceptable to the country as any which their circumstances admitted to be established. But when his ulti mate policy was developed, and it was apparent that his purpose was to establish a gorcrn meat which would at once reduce the native population to abject slavery, and to introduce African slavery as a permanent institution of the country and finally to annex the country itself to a portion of the U. S. severed from the rest of the Union, he lost all claim of sympathy both in the country that he left and in the country that he invaded. He is now only supported by foreigners. The native population, alike of Nicaragua and of the neighboring States are arrayed against him. Without such aid from the people of the United States, as can only be furnished him, in gross viola tion oi our neutrality laws, be will probably fall, sooner or later into the hands of the people whom he has attempted to subjugate. When Walker first went from California to Nicaragua and joined the liberal or revolution ary party of that State, his friends claimed for him motives of patriotism, like those which actuated Lafayette, Kosciusko, and others who participated in our revolutionary struggle. While he acted in the capacity of an officer in the revolutionary party of that State, there was a general disposition to regard him in the light thus presented. Even when he became the Commander-in-Chief of the army under tho Rivas Government, which was a native administration, whose Minister Plenipotentiary was recognized at Washington, his relations to Nicaragua were of a character that enlisted public sympathy and re spect. But when he assumed the reins of tho civil ai well as the millitary government; when by the doubtful forms of a more doubtful election he declared himself President, and Rivas a traitor; when all the native population who had op to that time recognized him as their saviour, now turned against him as a scourge and the war became a war of races between the owners of the soil and strangers from North America, public opinion commenced undergoing a radical change. The contest is now to be conducted against an alliance of all the Central American Stales, whil the piratical President has not even the poor re source of sympathy, from any civilized nation on tha earth to sustain his course, and but pittiful handful of men of very questionable character and motives. Defeat and disgrace await him now, as the merited judgment upon his reckless and piratical career. The Bcrdell Mcbder. The Rond street drama was brought to a temporary close on Saturday night last, by the verdict of the Coroner's jury, which wo have already presented to our readers. The lengthy and searching inquest, substantially fastened upon Eckel and Mrs. Cunningham the guilt of one of the bloodiest and most awful murders that ever has been chronicled by the records of crime. The parties, will be put upon the:r trial, and it is possible that they may not, upon that full and final examination, be conTicted. Dut a prima facte case appears to hive been fully made out against them. There ateems little doubt from the evidence, that Eckel did the deed, and he cannot be connected with it without implicating Mrs. Cunningham. The fastening of such a crime upon the female parties implicated, is calculated to inspire emotions of horror, but the public mind will experience a feeling of relief at the discovery and conviction of the guilty perpetrators of so fiendish a deed. The prospect for many days, that the atTiir would remain shrouded in darkness, and its perpetrators enjoy complete immunity, induced a feeling of alarm and diccontent among all classes. The disclosure of the mystery will bring a corresponding sentiment of satisfaction. So thoroughly is the public mind convinced of the guilt of the parties now in contincment, that no sympathy is manifested from any quarter in their behalf. The Bailroad Meeting at Owen.nlle. The Railroad meeting at Owensville on Saturday was largely attended, and the spirit manifested upon ; that occasion proves that the people along the line are determined to have a branch road. Books were opened and $7,000 subscribed on the spot. A company will be organized immediately, and the friends of the enterprise feel sanguine that the balance of the stock will be taken immediately. The importance of this branch road to Eransville cannot be overestimated. If the road is built to Owensville, it cannot fail to be pushed through to GrayTiile. The enterprise is now fairly set on foot, and it will be pushed through to a speedy completion. The $7000 subscribed is to be used in making the surveys of the road and determining its location.
