- 00" Tho Legislature of Rhode Island boca no c nsi leratly belbgg-ni on a hair-splitting point a few days since, which resulted as some
of the members declare in an open and flagrant
violation of the State constitution. . The Leg
islature convened on Saturday morning and organized with a .Quorum. Upon a subsequent call of the 1 louse, it was ascertained
that there was not even a majority present. Some of the members were desirous to adjourn
at once over until Monday, but a constitutional
question was sprung, derived from a provision
in the constitution which reads: "No number of
either branch of the Legislature, less than a
majority shall have power to adjourn only from
day to vday." ' The question was discissed ".nearly all day, when it was finally concluded that -as Sabbath ; breaking was a crime, to set a .better example , to the law-abiding people' r than : would ' be the
convocation of such hair-splitting law-makers
on a day regarded as holy time by most of
their constituents. During the discussion
decision of Julge Gushing was cited to the ef
fect that though "Sunday was not an ordinary sitting day, was one on which either branch
might frit and .transact business if it thought
proper.
(7" A few days since, two legil gentlemen
in this city.'applied to Governor Willard for
renewal of thcir commissionsas notaries public. A letter was 'received here yesterday,
that Governor, ,uillard has peremptorily re
