some other centre, niver to lie determined by mortal skill. And so on ad infinitum. We do not think, however, that astronomical science and enlightened reason can unite upon such a conclusion. A man casting his eyfs. upwards of a starry night has a glance iino eternity. Hie firmament,' in fact, preseiits to him one of the maniiostalions of etcrr nity that is, the eternity of space. "The whole universe" is a finite teim, nor have we! ähy Word to express that which we cannot conceive. We may speak of inhmte space aad infinite duration and 'iTius express a brute idea of the infinite; 'but the moment we at tempt to conceive and explain what thitJ is, ve are lost. V hen we talk of a "centre of the universe," for instance, we talk of a ihinj that is not,' for Ave necessarily comprehend in the tefui'k fcifcu.nference. If there'is a centre of the' univorso there is an extreme boundary. But does the telescope . intimate any such thing? On the contrary It positively ignores such, an idea. . it forbid; the belief that there is a point at which we can conclude there is aoluiuj beyoiuL And what could that "nothing"' be? One of the poets has this expression - - ;!'-' "it.; -:;::! 'Kriim wotl.l loJaiiiinous worM afar Where tlie uui versa siruu U Its naming wall." t' 'And we pause at the word "wall," hut; adroitly euotgh the poet, Moore we think it is, forbids criticism of the noun by thq quality of the verb and adjective, "spreads" and "tlaming." Yet the wurd wall is, notwithstanding, finite and degrading. We assert this, vet look in vain for a better expression, 1 he : fact is, we cannot imagine a condition where space is not- And thus the imagination is equally at fault in the attempt to conceive the idea of infinite space as to realize a condition where space is not. can hi neither centre nor circumference to the . universe, and that it is of infinite space and of eternal duration, subject only to changes under established laws. " While the telescope is thus peering into infinito space, and with every improvement Lrin'rin.r tn ni hf assurance of something be-0---C3 . . j jond, we have the same "iufinite" in its reta, tion to the minuteness of matter. . Every improvement of the microscope only brings to j the curious inquirer the conviction that animal life exists in minuter form, and that matter is divisible beyond the utmost power he can bring to boar upon it. In this direction human reason can hardly resist the conviction that there is not some limit, to tlie infinite. .But we seek for it in vain. And for the simplejeason that if this limit could be reached it would be nothing. Thus the end of our inquiry assures us that there is no nothing Töe Trce Policy. English capitalists and the" English Government are investing sveral million pounds sterling in the Grand Trunk Bailway, with the admission that the stock will not pay; but they are willing to sink money in an enterprise which opens up the re- ' sources of a growinj country. The value of public work is never to be estimated by the dividends on its stock. The most beneficial to the country may be the least profitable to the stockholders. More Rascalities in Wall Street. Wall street has leen thrown into great cominotion again, in consequence of the perpetratjon of an extensive swindle a lq LIuntington upon several bankers and merchants, by .Wil liam E. Thompson, produce market reporter of the Courier and Enquirer. The accused, it appears, has been in employment of the pro prietor of the above mentioned newspaper for the last twenty years, and dnring that time, while in the pursuit of his profession, he made .the acquaintance of the principal bankers in . Wallstreet.. Having enjoyed the confidence of many of the most extensive bankers, he succeeded within tha past few davs in bor rQwißg securities and honds to the extent ofj , ,over twenty .j thousand ' dollars upon false .checks which were left as collateral security with ithe creditors. On Wednesday (before ih!e fraud was discoveerd) Touipsop sailed for (, Europe in the steamship Persia, leaving his wife and family in this city. The fugitive is a man about sixty years of age, and whjMifc should, at this late hour of life, destroy the happiness .And fair fame of himself and his " -milv, we cannot imagine. f -
