"You may be corHe said that the paths through the sea, like'rect, Mr. Wentworib; but you may be atsured those across the desert, were works of acci-jour Universalist brother is ignorant of much 'dent. The Christian philosophers knew that everything came in us time, ana mat discoveries were not made till they could be of use. A Hue of m steamers would have been useless in the Mays of the revolution, for in that anti -Chronometrie time, ships or steamers could not luake a straight line ttcross from the old world to the new, and it was possible for shios. hav. Ing been weeks at sea, not to know on which "side of the Atlantic they were. When the 'Gulf stream was discovered, it was found that Vessels going from Boston to England, instead of running south to Charleston, and then going northward to England, could go straight 'across. The Atlantic seaboard, by these discoveries, was turned upside down. , The wonders of the ocean telegraph were dwelt on at length, and with much enthusiasm by tho learned lecturer. It would soon put a 'belt around the globe. The question arose, when these telegraphs were completed, what should be done about Sunday? In some parts of the world there would be too in a week, and Sundays generally would get contused. Moreover, if the telegraph offices in Jill part of the world closed their offices on "Sunday, our hews arrangements would be -constantly interfered with, and oftea we -should get tho news a week too late. The sea, said Lieut. Maury, is a great workshop, and everything connected with its in. - habitants is wonderful. It was most prolific of life, outnumbering the inhabitants of the land. The coral reefs, which were carbonate by tho Mississippi, by every river, and by every seaboard in the world. If we could inspect them and find where their material came from, we should find "them derived from a thousand places, at a thousand times, till we traced them back to the still brooks meandering among the hills. These coral insects are the mason? of the sea. Until recently all was conjecture about the depth and bottom of the sea. It was usuully thought that the height of mountains on the earth might bo accepted as the measure of the depth of the sea. As to tha character of the bottom of the ocean, that was left en tirely to the fancy of poets. But Brooks' lead tells another tale. There were no wrecks 'there, no wedges of gold, no dead men's -bones. Those were covered many feet fWn with the remains of animalculae. Wherever 'Wie sounding rod has been, it brings evidence -of perfect repose, and though these remains may have been lying there for ages, they are as perfect in shape and color as though just u.caicu. TO.- 1 1 !: . ' a uo lecturer explained to ine ,ience. - nu exemplified by experiment, the n anner m wmcn deep-sea soundings were made. The line on returning from the mysterious depths, ruvcaieu more man uiarence saw in his dream, for it showed that a telegraphic bed was prepared there from Europe to America. When the specimens of the bottom of the sea wer inspected by a microscope, it was found that at was composed entirely of the remains of lniusoria, ana that not a particle of sand or gravel was contained amongst them. But what was at present unaccountable, "volcanic cinders had been discovered at the bottom, in the route taken by the Coliins and Cunard steamers. He (the lecturer) at first surmised that they might be the ashes cast forth by the steamers in their passage, but Professor Baily had minutely examined them 'and reported that they were undoubtedly volcanic. The question was, how came they there? They laid as lightly on the bed of tho ocean, with the pressure of 400 atmospheres upon them, as down in the beds of xoyal chambers. There was no abradin Jorce there. The bed of the ocean, in its motionless scat, was made for a submarine telegraph. The wires once laid there, would re?xnain forever.; . .-.-... Lieut. Maufy considered the large 'cable, of wnictit way proposed to form the submarine telegraph useless. A light copper wire, coac--ed with gutta-percha, he considered sufficient. .there was no reason, indeed, why the tele

completed, he trusted that its first message from this countrj would be this: "The people of the'United States to the princes and potentates of the Old World, greeting. Peace to everj notion. Trade, commerce and Christian intercourse with all people." The lecturer was loudly and frequently applauded. Will he pardon us, if we say that lie disappointed large portion of his audivorsin one point? He neglected to state what the greatest depth of the sea really is. We know from, his published work that the Indian Ocean is in parts seven miles deep, but everybody has not had the opportunity to consult those interesting pages. """"o" "f" " i Long John Wentworth. A very eood tetory was recently told us of Long John Wentworth, illustrative not only of the character of that worthy, but of the fact that we have both political and office-seeking persons In this world. Everybody knows the strife connected with the selection of a chaplain of

the House of Representatives, but it is not so

generally known that those representatives of mm, whose " Kingdom is not of this world," pollute their hands with wire pulling as much as tnose who proless a less sacred calling. At one session, two clergymen, one a Methodist and the other a Universalist, respectively solicited Wentworth's support. To the former hejgave such assurances as left the impression that at least one vote was secured; and when the latter came, he gave his promise that he would vote for him, and finally did do so. Ut course, his Methodist friend remonstrated. "Well," said John, "I'll tell you how it is: You Methodists send us to hell without reserve' while mj UmvorsaIist frietl(1 gets us all to Heaven; and as my necessities are best ac,ie would preach you to hell as I do!"
