Many of the passengers were from Kentucky. 05" The river is stationary at Cincinnati, with thirty inches on tke worst bars to Louisville. All along the river, the rain has been general, and we may safoly predict a rise of a few inches at least. . 05" The wharf was livelier than usual yes terday. Several stern wheelers passed, each transacting more or less business. The Moderator passed up for Cincinnati, aid the Clifton down for St. Louis. 05"W are pleased to state that the gentle man who proposed to establish at this point a boat yard, is in the city, and will shortly Tegin making active preparations for building steamers . . 05"The fleet new stern-wheeler Red Wing-, passed up Sunday for Louisville. She is a model low water boat, and will continue in the Louisville and St. Iiouis trade until high water. We are under obligations to her officers for late St. Louis papers. 05The cold weather of this tnonth is unprecedented. The Upper Missouri and Mississippi are closed, and winter has fairly commenced in that lattitude. ' The steamer A. G. Mason, bound for St. Louis, was frozen up in the middle of the river above Hastings on the Mississippi, where she now lies. The passengers saved themselves, by going ashore on planks laid on the ice. On many of the Northern Railroads, the trains have been delayed by snow storms and in one instance the fires of the locomotive were extinguished by the heavy fall of snow. Altogether the weather of this month is remarkable, both (or its (saverity in the North, and its beauty here. 05" The present fashion; of dress, among the ladies, is driving all the railroad travel to the "broad guage" roads. . .' fjr The coal recently discovered on Deep Hirer, ia North Carolina, has been tested in Philadelphia, and pronounced to bo superior in quality. . 07" The Olney Republican says that game was never more abundant than at present, in that region. Deer, wild turkeys and ducks are brought to that market daily. OP The famous Egyptian Ninth District of Illinois, gave 18,000 majority for S. S. Mar shall, the Democratic candidate for Congress. His majority is the largest received by any j Congressional candidate in the nation. 03" We add yesterday, to the long list of bright days, with which we have been blessed. There was not a breath of air stirring; not a cloud; everywhere bright sunshine. May wo have a long succession of such days, only interrupted by rain. Illinois. meeting last, week in the cars between Lowell and Boston'! a fascinating little lady, travelling alone, with an air that invited an approach to an acquaintance, hei mproved it, and got so far caught in the flirtation, that on their arrival, in the evening, at the city, they went together to the same hotel, where their names were registered as a gentleman and his lady, and rooms were assigned to them as such. They had hardly taken possession of the apartments before an enraged man was thundering at the door, backed by a sheriff and a lawyer, and armed with a revolver; rushing in he demanded a hundred thousand dollars for the honor of his wife or thu life of her seducer The scene was dramatic, and enacted to perfection on tne part oi ttie irigntenea ana sname stricken lady. The wrath and demands of the furious husband gradually r abated, till he came to terms on the payment of $50JO dam ages, which being given him in good drarts and Notes, ho departed,' taking the erring lady r.:v5cr his arm. When the aüair became know iv and the names of the parties were disclosed, it was discovered the lady had previously "been up to such tricks" and the husband was a notorious "confidence man" and swindler; the whole affair had been regularly arranged plot to entrap the gentleman and "make him shell out." The conspirators were subsequently pursued to Lowell and arrested, and the Notes and Drafts which they had extorted from their soft victim were recovered. But as he refused to prosecute, they escaped unpunished. Jamaica . A passenger on one of the steam ers from New York to Aspinwall, on a reeent trip, gives the folio wing description of Kingston Jamaica, once the seat of an active commerce, of wealth, refinemont and prosperity: Since the emancipation, business has been almost abondoned by the whites, and some of the finest plantations and estates have been left without sale to be occupied by worthless manumitted blacks. The city looks like a place that had been beseiged and sacked, and was in the hands of the debris of the beseiging army. Nearly all of, the wealthy and intelligent classes have left and parted with their property for ono tenth of its value, and in many cases abandoned it on account of the conduct of the free negroes, whose sole occu pation ever since , has been' huckstering the fruit that grows on the vacant estates. The arrival of the steamer crowded the whole town, and many thousands of blacks lined the broken an(J crumbling wharves to witness our vessel. As soon as we lannded, crowds of fruit venders ottered the most delicious oranjren bananas, &c, in odd-looking baskets for tha I ' . . a I standard price of erery thing one dime. We eat cautiously of them then, but numbers were ; devoured unseen in the state-rooms at uiiii.

OjrThe Richmond Enquirer is quite mode rate in its tone since the return of Gov. Wise from Wheatland. Its editorial on Saturday, is supposed to have more than usual signiücance, written in view of Governor Wise's recent visit to Wheatland. . It is quite moderate in its tone, and objects to the course of the Charleston Mercury and the New Orleans Delta, as likely to throw difficulties in Mr. Buchanan's way, and to alienate the Northern Democracy, by prescribing for the new Administration a policy which, in the nature of things, it cannot undertake.
