Mr. r j Yeaden is a Southern man, born and reared in '"Charleston, and as he tukes .no part in the , politics of the dar, may be regarded as an im'Vartial and disinterested witness. Ilia huh jcharacter places his Ftitements of Mr. Fill- , aura's position una jubted: '' : Baltimore Patriut. ' ; . Catxeact IIonsE, Falls of Niagara, j October 7, 10 o'clock, p. m. "j Soon after toy arrival at Buffalo,, and I had properly stowed myself and luggage ait the 2 American Hotel! 1 dispatched tj Mr. Fillmore, who dwelt not for oif, by a civil and kind Irish " waiter, my,, card, enclosed in an envelope stamped with the image or '"counterfeit presentment" of that distinguished and truly .constitutional and patriotic statesman. Immediately after dinner he called on me, and. after some friendly converse, invited me to take tea 'and spend tho evening with him. I gladly '.' accepted the invitation, telling him that my , only object in taking Buffalo on my way to Niagara, was to see kin and shake his honest hanL" At the appointed time, (i, o'clock, r. I repaired to Mr. Fillmore's residence. lie lives in a neat and commodious, but unambitious wooden building of two stories, in Delaware street, with every indication -of com- - fort, modest elegance, and good taste about, yet without any show of either ostentation or wealth. Ilia circumstances lira, I believe, moderate, but easy, a wise and yet liberal economy ruling in his domestic and household arrangements. The drawing room was neatly and tastefully furnished, and adorned with several fine family portraits and other beautiful paintings, one of which, "the removal of Christ from the Cross after the Crucifixion," is a copy from Ruben's celebrated orig- , inal, in the Cathedral at Milan, and waspre- . neated to Mrs. Fillmore in her Jifetime by a .European gentleman. On my way I met or overtook Mr. Powers Fillmore, son of the exPresident, a polite and courteous gentleman, and without recognizing him, inquired of him which was Mr. Fillmore's residence. IJa pointed it out to me at some little distance J ahead, saying, "I would sco Mr. Fillmore's name on the door," and I preceded him and entered the little gateway in front of the house and rang the house or street bell. Finding ". that h followed me within the enclosure, 1 immediately recognized his family, but r.ot very striking resemblance to his father, and pn announcing my name and editorial calling to him, he at once recognized me as having seen me at the White House in Washington, in 1850, when I had called on Mr. Fillmore, i . . shortly after his accession to the Presidency, . on the death of Gen. Taylor, I having visited the National Capitol, that summer on my way to the Virginia Springs. Millard Powers Fillmore is the only living child of his father, who is a widower, yet in the prime of life. In manliness of form and in manly beauty, in well proportioned stature, limbs and bulk, in fine frontal development, " . in intelligent and benevolent physiognomy, and in ease, grace, and kindliness of manner, Mr. Fillmore is one of tho finest specimens physically and socially, of the genus homo that it has ever been my lot to meet with, either in Europe or America. Goodness and amiability seem to pervade his whole man, and to emanate from his countenance, and they ccr- " 1 tainly find utterance in his gentle and engag- - ing tones, and integrity, public and private, reigns in his heart of hearta. He is wholly above intrigue, trick, or deception and is that rura avis in terris, an - hönest politician and statesman, acting with a single eye and asingle heart to his country's good. Of all statesman of the present era he may justly be said 'to b most closely conformed to the school and model of the illustrious and pure-minded Washington. I was deeply pained to learn that Mr. Fillmore had buried his amiable, accomplished, and intellectual daughter, Mary Abigail Fillmore, who, after completing her education at the Albany State Normal School, according to the rule of the Seminary, nnd from her own praiseworthy choice and inclina1 tion to become useful, became, for a given time " teacher in the public school at Buffalo. She -Ui'eu of cholera at the residence of her grandfather in Aurora, New York on tho '20th July, J 185-1. In the Daily Iris, (now the Daily Times,) of Niagara Falls, then conducted by J. L. Hackstatf, (a young, talented, and con-j ; servative editor, and a highly imaginative and 1 tasteful poet, whose acquaintance I have hadj -the pleasure to make,) her character, endowmerits, and virtues are thus noticed. "She wa3 of an exceedingly amiable disposition, retiring in her manner, possessed of a fine and highly cultivated mind, and in the high social -position she occupied in the Executive mansion at Washington, deported herself with an nnafifected modesty and grace that were noticed and admired by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance." , At Mr. Fillmore's in addition to his son and himself, I met Horace II. Day, Esq., of New York city, (a gentleman who, judging from tha elegance and fluency ef his conversation, is quits Jloratian in his habitudes and tastes,) and Elam R. Je wette, Esq., former editor of the Buffalo Commercial Advertiser, two warm political and personal frionds of Mr. Fillmore, and exceedingly intelligent and agreeable gentlemen. The areopagus and the ladies of tha tea table soon claimed our devoirs, and I was (then presented first to Miss Fuller, a relative, ; and then to Mrs. Fuller, her mother, who enured the room afterwards, the younger lady doing tha honors and hospitalities of the oc- . casion with easy grace. The meal was a so cial and cheerfal one, without formalities or .mbasrasing ceremonies, every ono being
made to feel perfectly at home, in the enjoyment of both the physical and the colloquial f.-asU. .'-. .'. ..... . ., The social tea having Leen thus pleasantly ilü.spatohed, the gentlemen returned to the drawing room, and there we resumed an 1 continued, with unflagapn;; est and interest, our colloquial discourse, on political and other
j subject, until past 10 o'clock, P. JI, when I iu I retired, my host pressinir tor a krncrer star. It would not be proper to lilt the curtain of private life, and make public the convers of the parlor; but I may say without any violation of social propriety, that 1 regard the evening spent with Mr. Fillmore and his friends as one to be marked with a white feather in my life. 1 may add that he and his friends were confident of carrying:, in the coming 'election, New York, Maryland, Delaware and I lennessee, with strong hopes of rennsylvonia, I Louisiana," Kentucky, California, and with no usspmr ot Virginia and several other States, specially, since Ex-Governor Floyd's declaration, (in his speech at the New York Mer chants' Exchange,) as one sure to be chossn a Democratic , Presidential Elc-lor for his own State, that a compromise or fusion shoull take place between the Buchanan and Fillmore parties, in ordar to defeat the Southern renegade, and that he stood ready, if necessary, to cast his electoral vote for Mr. Fill more, and that the Democracy tff his Slate would hack him irt so doing, I repeat to you that Fillmore stock is on the rise, and that rapidly; and it need not surprise you should the Buffalo prove" ah animal of such speed and bottom combined as to beat the old Buck of Pennsylvania, and the Path finder of nowhere :n the Presidential race. I hare the satisfaction of beingable to state on iilr. i lllmore s own authority, from his own lips, that he is against repealing the Ne braska-Kansas Act, or restoring the Missouri Compromise lines; and is utterly opposed to any further agitation of. the slavery question, and lor restoring harmony and giving perma nent repose and peace to our now distracted countrv. xle azreed. too. with mo that he and Buchanan at the North were ii'hrinj; each ....... . . 3 a otner s battle, ana were waging common war against the common enemy that were seeking to poison our political Eden with the serpent and destructive element of political fioesoilisui I took leave of the noble, conservative, the constitutional, the patriotic Ex-President, who was true to the South, to the Union, and to the Constitution, when a Southern slaveholder had proved a broken reed, and who seems commissioned by Providence to save the com monwealth from impending evil, strife and convulsions. His course then was most con spicuous in its' results; and his investiture now with the Presidential mantle would again pour oil on the troubled waters, restore hal cvon da-s to the Republic, and give to conser vatism a' triumph that would sweep freesoilism and fanatical abolitionism from the land, and establish the peace and prosperity of the Union on the nock of the Constitution b'XIA.
